    Since the start of the Syrian civil war, Kurdish people in the North have carved out an autonomous region of their own - Rojava - by fighting the Islamic State. Their militias, which form the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have emerged as the most effective fighters against ISIS and won them a close partnership with the US.
    The ruling Kurdish Party, the PYD, has set up a democratic federation made of local governments. Their constitution claims to accept people of all ethnicities and religions and treat them as equals. One of its central tenets is equality of men and women. In fact, the all-female Women’s Protection Unit (YPJ) militia fights alongside the SDF, and they’re known to be especially good soldiers.
    But the more territory the Kurds take from ISIS, the more worried Turkey gets.
    Turkey has been at war with another closely linked Kurdish group, the PKK, for decades. In 2018, Turkey invaded the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Afrin, putting the country in direct conflict with the Kurds of Rojava.

      Drop Therapy Anarchy and communism are complete opposites of each other. So it doesn’t make sense to describe these people as anarcho-communism. It’s either one or the other but not both. Anarchy = complete freedom, which means a small government with minimal power over its people. Communism = complete control by the government over its people, which means a large powerful totalitarian government.

    • @thatonedude8977
      @thatonedude8977 Před 5 lety +131

      Noel Navarro obviously you have no clue what communism is. Communism is stateless, it’s basically communal anarchy, the only difference between those two is that anarchy is based on the individual and communism is based on the community. The state system you are talking about is socialism the phase between the revolution and communism. And (sorry if I crush your worldview) all the so called communist country’s (USSR, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea) are (were) not communistic but socialistic.

    • @All_you_need_is_love2018
      @All_you_need_is_love2018 Před 5 lety +11

      Lasse Hoehler It’s very obvious you’ve never read of Karl Marx, founder of communism, or ever heard of Mao Zedong. The classical definition of communism is when the means of production is owned by the state and the state (known as the commune) determines whats best for the individual. It’s a centrally planned economy, meaning individuals are not free to choose. It’s impossible to have anarchy (complete individual freedom) while having a commune determine what’s best for the individual (communism). Communism is in fact no freedom for the individual. I suggest you read “Das Kapital” to get further education on the topic of communism.
      Anarchy means total economic and social freedom, individuals choosing to promote their own interest and by doing so they end up promoting the public welfare.
      Anarchy in fact is an extreme form of the free-market economic system where no regulation exists and only individual freedom matters. While communism is at the extreme end where individual and property rights does not exist. The commune (just another word for the state) controls everything.
      That’s all the social science lesson you’ll get from me. The rest you’ll have to do on your own. End of discussion!

      @mr_dumbass Před 5 lety +88

      @@All_you_need_is_love2018 >"the state, known as the Commune" lmao not even close. Not one thing you said is true, just take the time to read a single wikipedia article before telling people to read Capital (which is a critic of the capitalistic method of production, not an essay detailling communism, that'd be the Manifesto).
      Also "anarchy is about the individual and the free-market" is so bafoonish it's beyond historical revisionism and fall in the category of pure ignorance. Anarchy is libertarian communism and nothing else, all other "anarcho-" are oxymoronic.
      Before any other theory, maybe start with the wikipedia page of Marx, the Capital, the Manifesto, Kropotkin, Mahkno, the 1st Internationale, the labour movement (syndicalism, l'Internationale ouvrière, the IWW, etc.), Bookchin, the CNT-FAI, Rojava, libertarian municipalism and communalism. This mini-documentary leaves out perhaps the most important part of the story, and one that greatly explains the attitudes of both the US and Turkish governments, among others. The Rojavan revolution is heavily influenced by anarchism, or at least by libertarian socialism more broadly. The means of production (etc.) are to a great degree in the hands of workers' councils, neither capitalist nor statist. Along with the secularism and feminism, this is a really extraordinary development in the world, akin to Revolutionary Spain/Catalonia in that country's civil war, The Ukraine Free Territory during the Russian Civil War, the Paris Commune, Chiapas today, and so many more.
