Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous area in the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia. For more than 30 years, it's been locked in a conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The fight between the two countries began in the early 20th century but became a frozen conflict for 60 years while the whole region was under the control of the Soviet Union.
When the Soviet Union fell, newfound independence sparked a brutal six-year war in the region, where Armenia emerged victorious. From 1994 to 2020, Armenia controlled Nagorno-Karabakh, while Azerbaijan rebuilt its military. Fighting erupted again in summer 2020, and Azerbaijan went on the offensive - eventually capturing most of Nagorno-Karabakh and dramatically reshaping the region.

Oftentimes when the Soviet Union drew up borders for its territories, it would intentionally disregard the pre-existing ethnic boundaries within countries. This was done by Stalin as a sort of fail-safe to ensure that if the Soviet Union did fall, Russia's neighbors wouldn't be able to prosper. This can be seen not only in Nagorno-Karabakh, but also in Abkhazia and South Ossetia in modern-day Georgia, Transnistria in Moldova, and the numerous exclaves in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan.

You forgot to mention that Stalin's and Lenin's the biggest effort was to disolve Russia itself, that results now in Russian-Ukrainian war and will result in border conflicts with Belorussia and Kazahstan where the majority of russians lives. That was done according to the proverb "divide and rule" in order to simplisize the conrol. Decades of wars will pass untill boundries settle down. It's also ironic that Georgia-birthplace of Stalin is at Civil war because of him and other bolshevics.

For a long time, Baku, Azerbaijan was committing the crime of ethnic cleansing, before the Karabakh War even started. That's why there aren't any Armenians in Nakhichevan now. And, it didn't help that violent pogroms ejected Armenians from places like Baku, Sumgait, and Kirovabad (Ganja).

there is subtle doctoring in the picture by VOX. just one detail: President Aliyev on 5:06 min says Karabakh - its Nagorno (mountainous part - russian langugae) and also its lowlands has belonged to Azerbaijan and is part of Azerbaijan. But the subtitles- the translation just says "Karabakh is Azerbaijan" as Aliyev saying. There is a big difference. Karabakh as a whole is a (geographic name) toponym developed not 100 or 200 years ago, But Karabakh as a region of Azerbaijan has been there for several hundred years. Nagorno is only mountainous part of it. So Mountainous Karabakh cannot be a historic land of Armenians as a toponym, which is why Armenians invented a new term Artsakh (instead Nagorno-Karabakh) unknown in any of the world maps of the last several hundred years. In order artificially to solve this problem, now, in recent one or two years, they they have come up with a new term - "lowland Artsakh" to denote the areas outside Nagorno Karabakh, which they had occupied 30 years ago. These 7 districts outside N.K. , purely Azerbaijani towns where 99 percent of the population were Azeris. Armenians then drove 700 thousand people from those towns. So until channels like VOX will not give the whole truth, it will be hard to make peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

There are no medieval Armenian churches in Karabakh, as de Vaal claims. The oldest Armenian churches there date back to 1840-1850, I.e. to dates after. they started being moved to the region from Persia in 1828 by the Russians. To commemorate 150th anniversary of this move in 1978 Armenians have erected a huge monument in Karabakh. As soon as the conflict started they quickly destroyed this very vivid proof of their migration to this region but in vein - there are hundreds of photos of newlyweds with this monument in the background… The churches that de Vaal is talking about belong to the Albanian Orthodox Church, to which the Armenians do NOT belong. The Armenian Gregorian church is not part of the Orthodox Church. It is shameful for de Vaal who wrote and spoke so much about the region not to know or pretend not to know these very relevant facts……..

Christian Armenians have been living in Negorno Karabakh for thousands of years before the country of Republic of Azerbaijan was created by Stalin. Christians have good reasons to flee, because of past ethnic cleansing by Moslem Azerbaijan and they want their families to be safe. For the past 10 months Azerbaijan had surrounded the Christians and cut off their access to food, fuel, electricity and medicine. Republic of Azerbaijan is led by Elham Aliyev inherited the presidency from his father Heydar Aliyev who was a KGB agent under the soviets. Azerbaijan is a police state that persecutes and murders its oppositions; just read about their Human Rights records on Amnesty International and other Human Rights organizations.

Thanks for the information about the conflict. It is interesting to see that there mentioned about major population are armenians in the region, but not mentioned why. They are in majority because of the Turkmencay agreement, thousands of armenians from Ottoman empire and Iran are placed in Nagorno Karabach. In the old maps of the region you can see azerbaijans names of the cities. Stepanakert is given by Armenians. Actually they are even not the armenians. They are hayes, and their country is hayestan. Old armenians are ethnic turkish people and their country Ərməniyyə, translated to Russion Armenia. Even the word self is originally turkish word. Ər (man) men ( me, I) means "I am the man here".

The video MISSED one crucial fact - between 1813 and 1918 HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of Armenians have been moved to the Karabakh region from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Ottoman Empire during the reign of Russian Empire. That was the main reason why there was Armenian population in the first place. It was done as a "divide and conquer" policy Russian Empire has been implementing for centuries. They intended to put christians in the middle of muslims to divide Azerbaijanis and Turks.
