Who are the Kurds and why don't they have their own country? | DW News

  • Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without a homeland of their own. Almost half of the world's Kurds live in Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Germany. Most are Sunni Muslims, but many adhere to other faiths. They have faced a long history of violent oppression and discrimination in the countries they live in and their attempts to set up an independent state have repeatedly been quashed. After World War One, they were promised their own state, which never materialized. The defeat of the Ottoman Empire resulted in the end of that opportunity for a Kurdish homeland. But the dream lives on.

    As a kurd, kurds haven't had a homeland for centuries, but neither Ottoman Empire nor Turkey have done injustice to us. We never wanted a "Kurdistan" in the middle of the WW1 while Ottoman Empire fight against the British, Australian and French. Kurdish, Turkish and the other ethnicities of the Empire fought shoulder-to-shoulder. How come Western states "promise" to create a country inside other nations borders? I saw Europeans and Americans come to join YPG to fight against Turkey. They are so deceived by the ones who want to "Divide and Conquer" Turkey. Although there is absolutely no chance to divide this country while people never forgets the Turkish saying; "Martyrs do not die, Nation does not divide."

    • @Majeekz
      @Majeekz Před 3 lety +6

      @greenarrow_G13 Dear Sir/Madam, I don’t want to cause unnecessary friction. We can agree to disagree ok.. however this is my point, although Kurds are a huge population they have never had an actual country, they have occupied lands of other countries but never actually had a country of their own. They formed an alliance with the Ottoman Empire and were able to reside within the regions of Turkey. We have always considered ourselves as ONE, today a huge population reside in Turkey they are completely free to speak their own language and we have dedicated Kurdish channels on TV for them, they are legally allowed to participate within the Turkish government and they have many other benefits too, which they should. We accept that our brothers and sisters are apart of our society and they accept us to be apart of their society. For you to say that Turks are bombing you now and you have no country because of Turks is completely wrong in my opinion.. Turkey is already a republic state and will always be, those you refer to that are being bombed are in fact terrorist groups YPG and the PKK who are trying to formulate independence within the Turkish state, they are in fact bombing and terrorising the region which is actually still occupied majority by Kurds themselves and WE TURKS and KURDS (the military force) are the ones protecting Kurds from Kurds. By the way, there are many Kurds in the military force of Turkey as well. We never used or abused our brother or sisters! You are wrong in thinking that we have. These ideologies are what is causing a divide and it is not necessary at all. I would also like to add this, I don’t know you I don’t know where you come from however I’ll give this example like the Scottish bombing The English, obviously they will defend their region by fighting back. Please stop giving Turks a bad name we don’t deserve this.

    I am Nigerian and this is exactly what the British and French did to us..dividing several ethnic groups into different countries...Yorubas who are 48 million are in 4 countries..Igbos 45 million are in 3, Hausas who are 80 million are in 4...meanwhile, 300 ethnic groups that were so different were packed into Nigeria...Imagine us Yorubas wanted our own ethnic group...they were divided into Togo, Benin etc...I actually think that Karma will come back to hunt them for their part in all these 100-year wars....its a miracle Nigeria is still peaceful...we should be on our 10th civil war by now. The difference is that every group is treated badly by the government so the anger is shared....the only group they attempted to genocide (with the help of the British of course) were the Igbos after they wanted their country but that didn't last too long..3 million dead and the next day the country is peaceful, systematic elimination of history etc...for over 20 years until corona happened....Oh well corona has caused as many ethnic groups in Nigeria to want their own county, lets see how this plays out.

      As long as y’all don’t go around telling us “You have no country, neither do you the right to” or “There is no Kurdistan, you’re the people of Iraq” then we’re cool. Just watch an interview asking Iraqis what would they think if Kurdistan becomes a country? And guess what? All of them refused!!! With ridiculous reasons, such as “We already claimed their land a long time ago, what’s the point now? When it has become a part of us?”. The thing is, none of y’all understands what we’ve gone through!! Because your land has never been claimed for such a long time, and by who? By four freaking countries!! Which makes it even harder to fight for independence. Imagine if four countries claimed your country, and one of the presidents literally experimented chemicals on a town of innocents. So no, there isn’t much peace between us, we’re just chill now. Because after Sadam you’ve become weaker, I bet that if y’all had power y’all would do the same as Turks are doing now. But because y’all are powerless just like us, we’re suddenly friends? After such a deadly and suffering history towards us? You know damn well that we’re not able to forget and move on from everything that has happened to us.

    Kurdish culture is a legacy from the various ancient peoples who shaped modern Kurds and their society. As most other Middle Eastern populations, a high degree of mutual influences between the Kurds and their neighbouring peoples are apparent. Therefore, in Kurdish culture elements of various other cultures are to be seen. However, on the whole, Kurdish culture is closest to that of other Iranian peoples, in particular those who historically had the closest geographical proximity to the Kurds, such as the Persians and Lurs. Kurds, for instance, also celebrate Newroz (21 March) as New Year's Day.[254]
