Jiyan: Story Of A Female Guerilla Fighter (War Documentary) | Real Stories

- The fascinating story of Jiyan, a female guerrilla fighter who devoted twenty years of her life in the Kurdish militant struggle, reveals women’s determination for freedom not only against another oppressive regime, but also against the patriarchy.
Jiyan Tolhildan is a young Kurdish woman living in the Kurdish region of Syria. After years of oppression by her family, her teachers and the society as a whole, Jiyan decides to go to the mountains to join the Kurdish struggle for freedom.
When the Arab Spring breaks out Jiyan and her friends decide to go into the cities in Syria to join the protests. They also set out to educate Syrian women on women’s rights in the Rojava region. Now, six years after the Arab Spring, Kurdish forces have a semi-autonomous region in Syria. For the first time in history, women have an autonomous political organisation and an army in Syria. The women named creating this organisation “the women’s revolution.”

I didn't know till this day that the story of the Kurdish women fighters was so deep, convoluted, and imbued with such a deep philosophical meaning. They were fighting in the mountains decades before the Syrian conflict erupted. It's incredible! I was crying half the time of the video because I was touched so much by their struggle, their cause, the hardship of their lives, their attitude. When I look at them I can't help but compare them with American suffragists. But you know, with guns. So the police probably won't crack down on their meetings. There is a long hard road ahead of them, but I have not a tiniest doubt they'll walk it all the way through.

Nobody really asks why are they fighting? It is completely Kurdish racism. Indians in America, Catalans in Spain and so on. If every sub-identity in the countries took up arms and wanted to establish a country in their own name (which Kurds do not want, only Kurdish nationalists), then the world would be nailed. PKK has been very successful in the image given by the Kadines. It has won many people's sympathy. But the facts are not like that. Erdogan If we do not take into account is much more hierarchical and Islamist Kurds from modern Turkey.
@@scorpioraptor They have the right to assert their identity which has been the basis of the oppression they are trying to overcome.Don't conflate that with racism. What they're enduring is not the natural state of things.
@@scorpioraptor is it racism, wanting to be allowed to speak your own language?
@@kajakern268 Don't make perceptions, you are speaking in your own language. otherwise you have already forgotten your language. You want autonomy. So why? You live your own culture (which is not very different from Turkish culture), you live your own language, and you even marry Turks. So why do you want autonomy? Because you want to own a fragmented land called Kurd. So where is the freedom of wanting a country over nationality? Moreover, most of the Turkish citizens of Kurdish origin living in Turkey think like me.

These are the people who can reform Islam to give it legitimacy in the 21st century. Thank you uploader for such an enlightening documentary. The women fighters reminds me of the women fighters in Israel who are now regarded as equal to the men despite their patriarchal ideology.
It would be even better if they would do away with religion completely.
@@oskarfabian5200 Religion as all things had it's uses throughout human history. I do not believe it to be integral to society in today's world, but it should be given respect. Religion brought us great inventors, philosophers, mathematicians, and in some ways kept us from just becoming nothing more but a brutish species. I say all this as a somewhat agnostic deist.
Long live to kurdistan..god protect them
I’m so inspired and proud of these women. I read about a lot of military or warrior women in history so this is another one for the books.
Thank you for your messages of support. In the swamp of the Middle East, they are making us taboo. We are aware that the universe is not limited to the Middle East and Islam. If you want to help us, the greatest support you can give; spreading the truth to more people on social media. See you in better tomorrows.
How do you proud that these people kills even babies, doing car bom attacks aganist civilians?
@@anemoiamed89 Your bravery inspires me. I wish you and all of your sisters nothing but the best !
@BiJi KuRD u KuRDiSTaN Classical pkk literature. Nothing but lies. Kurds never have stata in history. There were no kurds in anatolia, syria and mesopotomia until Turks qonqured these lands. We took this lands from romans not from kurds. Kurds came from southern mountains of persia. If Turks wouldn't let them live free no kurds could came and spread these lands. If Turks did not let them peshmerge to pass trough Turkish land to reach Ayn el Arab they would be vanished! We even took pkk terrorists via Turkish ambulances and treat them in Turkish hospitals! You are not just ungrateful, you are inhuman! Pkk did tenths of car and live bomb attacks aganist civilians! Even killed lots of infants! You have never had a state and never will. Pkk is demolishing arab and Turkish villages to change demography! But I have a great news for you. You will not always be under protection of western countries and we will never forgive and forget that the meanness you did to the humanity. This is not about kurds, this is about terrorists. Otherwise, millions of Kurds could not live freely in Turkish cities and kurds from syriya won't flee Turkey.
Salute to Kurdistan. Keep freedom of speech, Gender equality, Maintain democratic process, Without Secular values, success is near to impossible for a Republic. Believe in a God Who loves people of all faiths, even nonbelievers too. If believer or non-believer is good to others. Again, salute to the brave sisters. From Bangladesh.

Really touched by these brave women.
Best wishes from Iran
Crazy. The girl at 27:50, married at 12, had two children. She is still a extremely young and serves in a military force. She has put so much into so little time.

Salute to all my Kurdish sisters and brothers from India 🇮🇳.
Hey my frirnd salute from Kurdistan
Sadly, Jiyan Tolhidan, one of the YPJ commanders interviewed in this film, was assassinated by a Turkish drone strike this week.
sadly? why dont you join ypj to fight against turkey? if u feel that sadly?
My perception about middle eastern women have change after knowing about these kurdish women fighters.....
There have been women through history who were warriors. Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko Russian female sniper with 309 recorded kills in WWII. She holds the most successful kills in history for women. There was women in Russia also fighting in the front lines for their country. Japan had the Onna-Bugeisha (women warriors) who fought along samurai. The US had women night bombers in WWII. These things are hardly spoken of.
The inspiring and unique (?) thing though about these Kurdish women is that they are taking on patriarchy itself, not fighting from within it to achieve its own ends.
India also has many median women fighting with the British for freedom the queen of Jhansi , chirtoor Chinamna ! Never must anyone underestimate the power of a woman she is shakthi herself ! ( an embodiment of strength and power )
They can’t even compare to these Kurdish women so please…..
stay strong this is what these countries need WOMEN in leadership ONLY way for PEACE among their NATIONS
We all need women in leaderships. Capitalism is a man’s world 🤮
Salute to all kurdish woman fighters..
