- Ever wondered where countries get their names, and why we don't call some of them by the names they call themselves? Well, in this video I answer those questions and many more. I talk about country names in general and get into detail about Japan, Germany, Greece, Papua New Guinea, Spain, Belgium, New England, and much more!

1:42 I feel so powerful for being able to read the korean :) "Mihapjungguk"
be aware that this is a romanization of how it sounds and the "p" and "k" are really more like very light sounding "b" and "g" but its easier for english speakers to read it like that, Im overexplaining but oh well somebody might learn from this I guess :)
Extremely Underrated Channel, Video quality is top notch
I've subscribed to loads of history/geography channels over the years, but have a feeling this will become my favourite. Love your TikTok account. You come across as a really nice, genuine and well-researched person. Condense the information into digestible videos and your voice is great for narration.
Great
The fact you came up in my reccomendations

Turkey officially changed its English name to Turkiye at the U.N. in 2022. Let's see how many average English-speakers go along with that one. I remember Turkey trying this once before (I think it was around 1980), but it went nowhere.
Who remembers Kampuchea? There was even a famous concert called "The Concert for Kampuchea." Any guesses? No? It's what we still call Cambodia.
Then there's Moldavia becoming Moldova and Ceylon becoming Sri Lanka. I'm sure if I thought hard enough, I'd come up with others.
We still call it Turkey and those other countries are the old names before they were colonized
Nice job - and, Ad Astra Per Aspera!
Missed a great opportunity to mention Turkey changing to Türkiye! But great video!!
An interesting little fact about the name "Cymru" which Welsh call themselves is it means "fellow countrymen." Very different from the English who use the word "foreigner". I'm an English person living in Wales, and I think the difference in approach to naming Wales perfectly sums up the general attitudes of the two nations.
It depends from combrogi which means fellow countrymen.
Love ur vid came from tiktok
Nice video, that was long
1:15 Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think "badger" should be translated as 獾 (huān) instead of 拜格 (which is a brand of knife, apparently).
yeah i think you’re right lol. 獾 is the animal
thank u for this comment! my chinese friend corrected me before posting but i forgot to change it:(

@@GateNerd ok, just wondering

Pro-NUN-see-a-shun
Thumbnail shows ‘County’ and title shows ‘Country’. wuz up 👀
If gimp had spellcheck my life would be so much better. Thank you, though, I'll fix that now
@@GateNerdplease don’t react to my petty problems! 😂💪
Looove your videos here and on TikTok - it’s Deutschland (missing a “c” in the video) tho 🥲😅
From a German perspective: Netherlands in German would be „Niederlande“ which kinda translates into „flat land“ which maybe supports the interpretation of “low land”? Hope it helps 🙌🏻
ah, yes, typo! shame i missed that, thanks ofr pointing it out!
