It establishes it pretty well here, her husband was killed, she seeks vegnence on those who were involved even if they "just watched" and has a katana that traps souls. Now if you want to know why the sword captures souls that'd be the Sword's origin not hers
The only reason why Flag died in the sequel is because Katana was not there. She would have got his back.
Can you imagine just before Peacemaker stabs him, Katana pops out of nowhere and slices off his hand.

Katana is actually a helper of the Suicide squad in some of the comics so she didn’t appear to add random more characters.
She was there to have his back and intimidate the others into compliance. Although the intimidation part was kind of ruined by Harley.
at least in the extended cut, with a scene with harley psych-analyzing everyone, Katana basically gives her out of control behavior a huge middle finger when her mask is mentioned and she says "I'm not hiding" which is true for others too (like how deadshot barely wears his mask). Also I imagine they might've wished to set up a suicide squad sequel with ras al ghul, lady shiva, etc-which tbh, this "starro" BS and 300 characters we are getting, I liked that possible concept WAY BETTER.

How to introduce a character when you dont know what writing is: “This is katana, she’s got my back. I know its like halfway through the movie but here’s another character. Also she has sword”
It's obvious that David Ayer shot a lot more scenes with Katana that were supposed to be shown BEFORE this scene, with that flashback sequence spliced in clearly being one of those scenes. But most of those backstory scenes were cut out, causing her intro in the final product to be so painfully forced because of the fact it was not SUPPOSED to be an introduction scene.
I feel like Katana would be a perfect fit for Peacemaker season 2 where she goes after Peacemaker for killing Flag while Peacemaker deals with the aftermath of season 1. We could even get more characterization from her since James Gunn is writing and directing all of season 2. Maybe bring in Deathstroke too and it’ll be a bloody good time.

The dialogue, like the film, itself, could have been so much better. I want to write books and comics in the future and I think some people don't realize that writing good dialogue is really hard. It's much harder than the people who are good at writing great dialogue can make it look.

While obviously underused in this movie, I really liked Katana, I’m a big DC fan and I’d actually never heard of her until SS and after the movie I had to look up everything about her. Karen Fukahara was excellent casting and her outfit looks amazing in this movie, I really hope DC uses her again perhaps in a solo film to flesh out her revenge origin at least.

Will Smith as Deadshot, the Rock as Black Adam. The two casting I can't unsee them playing as themselves. They should've gone with a good but relatively unknown actors.

That reaction was totally wrong, we should have seen Flag upset by his boss and Deadshot amused, as throughout the movie Flag is about him being a soldier while Deadshot is a hitman. And no, I don't think this scene is a montage problem: it's just wrong writing.
Katana was wildly underused in this movie like if you're gonna include as cool a character as her give her more screen time.
That said I genuinely like this scene
She can join the batman's outsiders like in the comics with more back stories, if they ever get that far. 😁
