I can brag about something most of you people can't: I have flown on an Il-18. It was more than 40 years ago but I still vividly remember how noisy it was. It had a very sluggish climb rate and a cruise altitude of about 20,000ft but overall I had an impression that I am flying on a very safe aircraft.
I've noticed many former military pilots that use the same landing technique... where the pilot will move the yoke forward and backward during the landing flare to feel for the runway. My flight instructor frowned on that practice because it can cause a pilot induced oscillation. I have alot of respect for russian built aircraft. They are solid and mostly reliable.
Hi Robert.G We are in a quite exclusive club - I've had the pleasure too. 1984, Gatwick-Warsaw and back.Tinnitus for hours afterwards, and as you say, a bit of a cloud-hugger which just lopes along. But, built like a battleship, and has something raw and, well, atmospheric about it no modern jet can match. That flight got me into the whole aircraft thing. I'm amazed and pleased there's (at least) one still flying. So-thanks to JustPlanes and kindest regards to you Robert. G.
Lotta bad comments about Russian plane but let me tell u something they can last FOREVER beside they have the best pilots...they can land on beaches dirt grass highways.African give lotta respect to Russian planes and pilots cause they help supplying our cities transport our people. That video is about aviation in general old propellers, flying over Africa.
I spent four years in the Peace Corp, traveling to third world countries like this. It is just insane. I was once in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. No jetway, you always board from a rolling stairway. Prior to boarding, all the passengers just sit around underneath the plane. They sit on the tires, smoking cigarettes, no security. The airline I flew on was not permitted to fly in US airspace because they met none of the security or maintenance minimums. I made it though!
Very interesting video. IL-18 is always special for me as it was the first aircraft I flew with in the mid 60s (Paris,(France) to Varna (Bulgaria) when I was a kid.
Hey, did anyone notice. There is not a single digital display in the cockpit. 100% analog gauges. First class technology right out of the 1940's Those Ruskies are amazing!!
... Gallantly crew, you are the real Russian pilots, simply experts !!! I am proud of you and our Soviet technique ! The airplane is more than 50 years old, and it everything flies and as early as years 30 will fly in case of due service ! Economic and safe engines, analog instruments - here it is secular reliability !!!
Wow. That's all I can come up with at the moment. Just plain ol' wow. Perhaps aftr I have given it some thought, I can come up with something other than all the sarcasm that first came to me. Nice video, and the crew who filmed this should get a nice little bonus in their next check.
This is beautiful to see my homeland from the air. Mogadishu looks amazing despite 22 years of hell. from the cockpit, I can see swimming pools in some people's gardens in mogadishu! maybe its not so bad after all. For some at least.
If it wasn't for the al-Shabaab militants and all the inter clan fighting, you'd find Somalia has some of the most pristine beaches on the planet.... and it stretches for miles. They're losing out on tourism dollars.
All I have to say is you guys are brave. I wouldn't step foot on that rickety thing. Thanks for the video though. It's nice to see things and places i'll never see in person.
+dimanentor I flew in an IL-18 from Leningrad to Sochi and Sochi to Moscow more years ago than I care to remember. I also ( As a flight dispatcher ) flight planned them across the atlantic from Shannon to Gander for many years, never a problem. A damn good airoplane !!
That particular aircraft has logged a bunch of damn miles, and well worn. But those old IL-18s are built for it, and can take maximum abuse with minimal maintenance. Not exactly pretty, but they provide a fairly safe and comfortable ride, and are ruggedly built. The ones that look like they've flown straight out of hell are the ones I'd trust most.
Let's not been unfair, remember that people around the world have different experiences and different way of life. It is not about complaining, it is about asking for the rights they paid for.
Everytime I see this plane I betray the thoughts of my Country because she was designed and built by the Soviet Union, but she is a stunningly beautiful airplane.
Believe me these old Russian machines have been operating in Somalia's sky the last 22 years yet a single crash was never reported in contrast look at rest of the world how many planes crashed the last 22 years, the answer is whatever you have there is no guarantee, everything is in the hand of God, and may he guarantee us safety.
What year was that plane built and how much to they look into metal fatigue? In that part of the world do the pilots use English talking to controllers.
why is the pilot yanking back on the control's during landing like that, even basic training teaches you to be smooth on the control's especially on final when a stall is most likely
The last of IL-18 planes was produced in 1978. It' amazing that some of them still can fly.

no clue there, but i was wondering aswell. ( i had a rough landing with almost loss of controll thanks to oscilliation - a lesson i wont forget.)
maybe the trimming is kinda off?

Beautiful video. Good to see these old birds still flying. :)

I envy those pilots. They get to fly a real plane instead of a computer.
Thank you.. glad you enjoyed it! :)
Stunning video, and a stunning aircraft. many thanks.
Good to see 'proper' analogue gauges in use!
Once again, another amazing video from justplanes. Thanks for posting!

awesome video!!! this is a fantastic document of African aviation.
Thanks for sharing!!!
Beautiful old aircraft built to last.
real pilots
Its a 1950's aircraft, built to 1940s standards with 1930s cabin crew. Great for historians!
Thanks for the video trailer. From a national respected airline to rusty IL-18s well done Somalia !
The flight originates from Hargeisa in Northern Somalia (Somaliland).
This is beautiful to see my homeland from the air. Mogadishu looks amazing despite 22 years of hell. from the cockpit, I can see swimming pools in some people's gardens in mogadishu! maybe its not so bad after all. For some at least.
running that machine must be art.
Who the heck would want to go to Mogadishu.
It's a pleasure to watch a Flight Crew actually flying the Aero Plane. :)
wow i bet Somalia isnt somewere you'd want to go back to anytime soon!
Great Video, thx for sharing
Still safer than a dreamliner.
The li-ion problem is still unsolved, ore something else?
What a museum piece!
If it wasn't for the al-Shabaab militants and all the inter clan fighting, you'd find Somalia has some of the most pristine beaches on the planet.... and it stretches for miles. They're losing out on tourism dollars.
Most excellent security. Great vid.
That aircraft looks like something which is constructed in the 50's and which belongs in an aviation museum !
Wouldn't that be a better world. We are all the same, same needs and wants; the only difference, we speak a different language.
man you guys have been around!
More actually: pilot, co-pilot, airnav, flight eng., radio
in 2010 the few of Il-18's still is beeing in service by some of air companies
All I have to say is you guys are brave. I wouldn't step foot on that rickety thing. Thanks for the video though. It's nice to see things and places i'll never see in person.
nice video. thanks for sharing.
Soviet IL-18, unpretentious, reliable. Сan land on a field. They are still in service!
+dimanentor

WOW! good old fashioned manual flying without the autopilot
There is one

Very nice..
Flight engineer could be a cover boy for Soldier of Fortune. Real, gritty old school operation. Very cool.
Trust me, it's easy to give thanks to the simple things after watching a video like this. I also do not take water and electricity for granted either.
Shit..Seems to be a lot of control yoke movement required on final approach...
Agreed. I wasn't sure if he was on approach or on a riding bull!!!
This is my first airplane. I was 8 months old when I fly for the first time
From Egal international airport (Hargeisa/Somaliland) to Adan adde international airport (Mogadishu/Somalia)
It took 2012 from Hargaisa Airport of Somaliland ti Moqadishu Airport of Somalia.
Very nice
A very good plain also used to help those poor people in Africa, mean humanity!
your right bro 100% for ya words!
The flight engineer at 3:26 - Clint Eastwood.
I am in hargeisa right now.
are you still there now in 2019 ?
I wouldn't complain at all to get to fly with an Il-18 (:
Let's not been unfair, remember that people around the world have different experiences and different way of life. It is not about complaining, it is about asking for the rights they paid for.
Everytime I see this plane I betray the thoughts of my Country because she was designed and built by the Soviet Union, but she is a stunningly beautiful airplane.
Tommy was a brave dude filming this one!
3:27 Arnie is in the cabin!
This has to commercial/airline pilot hell.
state of the art....
I like.
What a beast!
boa florient, you are right, it is indeed scary, looked like the plane is old
I like the guys chair on the right side at 1:58!!!
The in-flight snack was gangsta! I love it! I'm curious, what were the two airports it flew to & from?
A great vacation destination !! LOL
Russian crew is flying this one!
There's not enough whiskey in the world to get me on that plane.

Wow! Incredible. I didn't know that soviet wheelbarrows can fly, not to mention landing..
BTW, looks like those primitive engines use lot of coal..
Good machine!
The scope is probably for shooting down Black Hawk helicopters.
lt looks to be a 3 man crew. The flight engineer most likely had the power levers.
proper flying
Crash air is wishing you a happy flight.
SUCH a nice change from the usual boring Boeing, Airbus stuff.
nice vid and do you think that klm md-11 is ever gonna happen??
are they still in service ?
my grad use to fly it in USSR
🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴💪💪💪
Horribly inefficient, but great-looking nonetheless.
An update is needed for this plane!!!
update ?! how the hell do they still sell the parts lol
JGG737 Efficient enough for something desiegned in 1960s :)
@@ITmage in late 1940s
its a quiet bunch
What year was that plane built and how much to they look into metal fatigue? In that part of the world do the pilots use English talking to controllers.
Don't understand people who complain about ryannair
Mogadishu Somalia Military Hanoolato The King Cobra
Hollyday in Mogadishu. Bought a goat.
very old aircraft
He does not have hands on the pwr levers during landing. Seems strange.
I'd be so scared.
when was this video taken? the flight was from..?
I love IL-18 and I'm russian maybe I can go to Somali and become a pilot?
why is the pilot yanking back on the control's during landing like that, even basic training teaches you to be smooth on the control's especially on final when a stall is most likely
Scary plane...
What's the scope, above the throttles (2:44), used for?
DaveFromBrooklyn I belive its RPSN/2N Emblema weather radar screen.
An exceptional Aircraft and beautifully sexy, Nice is an understatement.
