The film crews and the production people here are different so unfortunately I can't answer your question with precision... I think for the most part our guys are happy filming new and old planes. In 24 years and thousands of flights we've not had anything happen... meanwhile new planes crash too so I think if its your time to go wether you're on an Antonov 24 or something brand new, you're going.. Glad you enjoy their work though :)
Flying into Somalia has to be one of the most treacherous journeys to be undertaken by anybody to date. Watching this vid was quite surreal... Well done guys, I felt like I was on the flight expecting some projectile to hit the plane.
Wow, what a world away from the concrete and asphalt of a Western airport - I was saying, "where is the runway? The pilots are just picking a piece of dirt to land on!" Great navigation in a remote and hostile environment! Well presented.
Serious question for JustPlanes: as seasoned travellers, do you nevertheless still get a little apprehensive when flying on very old planes in Third World countries? Anyway, love the vids!
Well Navaids and in many cases airfields in Africa are less sophisticated in many areas than in the First-world but......Location, I must disagree...I would love to fly around Africa, theres just something about it that gets me :)
Well, actually, operators of the An 24 are not mainly African airlines. Countries whose airlines currently operate this aircraft type are Cambodia, Cuba, Kyrgyzstan, North Korea, Russia, Pakistan, Ukraine Kazakhstan and Somalia. There are indeed several African airlines that operate latest generation aircraft, including those with orders for the B787 Dreamliner. So wake up please and be welcomed into the 21st Century.
this video must have been made several years back because i flew from Bosaso airport two years ago and the Puntland goverment spend $15m building a terminal and proper runway and control tower. Its has slidding doors and water fountain garden now stretching to the sea with palm trees.
The plane itself is not dangerous if flown properly... most of the crashes are due to poor maintenance and pilot error. The reason why so many russian planes crash is that they are very cheap, so African airlines uses them, if B737 was same price, they had the same safety record as russian ones... :-)

The Somali Department of Tourism welcomes you!
The Somalians are fluent in almost every language, hence the communication between the Pilot and the TOWER~!
