  • A popular morning snack ( or any time of day) for Chamorus due to its flavor and convenience, empanada can be found fresh every morning at most mom and pop stores on Guam (of course, if it's not sold out by the time you get there). A fried corn shell with a thick chicken & rice filling, eating this is sure to give you a taste of the island.
    Ingredients:
    Crust:
    4 cups masa harina
    1 cup cornstarch
    2 packs Mama Sita's achuete powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    3 1/2 cups chicken broth
    Filling:
    6 cloves garlic
    1 onion
    2 cups chicken broth
    4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
    1 pack Mama Sita's achuete powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon black pepper
    1 cup cream of rice

    You made it look so easy. My wife is from Guam and always talks about the empanadas. I’m going to surprise her with these. 😊

    Thanks for the video, made these yesterday tasted so great. Our friend from Guam was over and she told us to make 1/2 cup soy sauce, 1/4 lemon juice / chillie peppers/onions for a little dip.

    I’m glad to see Chamorro cooking because some of our recipes can be complicated.

    Small game changing culinary tip...place a wet napkin or towel under your board to avoid it from moving as you slice.

  • @joanne-mariebhetiback4182

    Every family has there own recipe.. my aunty makes the dough slightly different.

    What would you add to the dough to make it flaky? That looked good still.

      Yes, I added around 1 cup of cornstarch for the crust, forgot to add that part into the video

      Hi! I actually ordered it from Amazon.
      Alpha Living Tortilla Press and... www.amazon.com/dp/B07FXJHMPZ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
      But, I have seen them at some flea markets before as well.

    Where can I buy cream of rice or any replacement?

    • @mikeseats7305
      @mikeseats7305  Před 2 lety

      I’ll usually find it near the cream of wheat at the grocery store, sometimes in aisles with the rice too. For a replacement, you can grind up your own white rice at home.

    Does anyone ever add cheese to these?

    • @mikeseats7305
      @mikeseats7305  Před 2 lety

      Yes, I’ve seen some with cheese. It’s usually just chicken, but you can change the filling how you’d like, even use a different meat.

    omg though that leprechaun movie intro terrified me, it's another awesome video! Do you have any trouble finding your ingredients?

    • @mikeseats7305
      @mikeseats7305  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks! No, everything is pretty easy to find. The achote powder may be a challenge though if you have no Filipino stores around. Not sure if they sell it at Mexican stores, but it may also be called like annato powder, or you can use water that’s been soaked in annato seeds
