Loose aperture blades and other details in Yashica-Mat Copal-MXV

- The aperture blades was Loose so could not close down to f/22 and the shutter blades was not working very good, and the slow gear was not working correct on 1 second in this old Yashica-Mat with a Copal-MXV shutter and a Yashinon 1:3.5 f=80mm.
it was not a big problem to disassemble this camera and the shutter, then clean the shutter blades and the aperture blades with Isopropylalcohol 99%. A few things to remember, is to set a mark on the back of the aperture control ring, before disassemble and also remember how the shutter blades and the aperture blades was sitting
The real problem was to put the 10 aperture blades back into the shutter, it takes SO MUCH longer than I expected it, so I speed up the process in the video. But it turn out to be a BIG SUCCES.
Then I also taken out the slow gear because 1. second was way toooo long, because of old sticky oil or dirt, I clean it in Isopropylalcohol 99% and then lube the axle ends ONLY! with very fine, and very little sewing machine oil, and then everything works perfect again

Recommendation for putting the aperture and shutters together at 51:46. Use some not so sticky tape such as Kapton tape. I used that to hold the shutter teeth(?) in place on the bottom, then put the rear of the fixture on top. The great thing about Kapton tape is that it really isn't that sticky, so when I removed it there was no tape residue left on the shutters. And even if there was, it would most likely be easily taken off with some ISO alcohol.
Other than that, great video! This helped me clean the shutters on my MAT 124. Now i just need to fix the lever, and light meter... I guess that's the life of owning old cameras haha.

My Yashica-D has a faulty shutter and stuck self-timer. Your video is the closest and clearest I can find online. Thanks for sharing and it would definitely help my repair a lot!

Thanks for another great video. Helped me fix my Yashica Mat that was only firing 1/500s and bulb.
As a side note, it is possible to remove the leatherette in (mostly) one piece, but it takes some time and patience.
First use a hairdryer to soften the leatherette and the glue, then apply some isopropyl alcohol around the edges until you can gentry pry the edge up with a finger nail or other implement that won’t scratch the paint, then repeat this process of applying the alcohol and lifting the edges until the leatherette eventually comes away. I was able to reuse mine, with just a small corner that ripped.
Thanks Carl, I also sometimes use the hairdryer to soften the leatherette, but it's a good idea to use Isopropylalcohol to soften the leatherette so it's more easy to pry off, without make marks on the painting :-)
Hey there! my yashica 124 has this exact problem (only bulb and 1/500 works) may I ask how you ended up fixing it? did you have to disassemble the whole shutter like in this video? any help would be appreciated!
@@jncocoa there are a bunch of pins that sit within slots cut into the ring, seen at 21:52. These move as you rotate the speed dial to give you the necessary shutter speed. One of these pins had slipped out of its rails and was stuck under the plate that rotates when you change the shutter speed so it wasn’t doing anything when you turned the shutter speed dial. I took this plate off and made sure the pins were sitting right in these slots and tested the shutter speeds worked before reassembling.

I would have liked to see you assembling the aperture rings in real-time, not speeded up because that looked tricky but otherwise a fascinating step by step video. I've repaired a few old cameras but I've never had to dismantle things quite so much, thankfully!

I have a 1957 Yashica Mat with a 75mm 3.5 Lumaxar lens and Copal mxv shutter. The slow speeds are off. I am getting PPP repairs to give it a CLA when Covid lockdown is over. An interesting video.
Hi Kenneth. Thanks again for this video. As it turns out my Yashica D had four spacers for the lens plate and one dropped into the side focus mechanics. So the whole side had to come off. Fantastic how serviceable these old cameras are. You’re video is really helpful. Thanks.

Chris Sherlock has camera repair videos and he uses a jig made of sockets for the assembly of diaphragms and shutters. Pretty quick process.

@@pedrodutra4088 I saw a photo album of a guy repairing his Yashica TLR. He said 'when I was all done I used the autocollimator to verify/fix the focus'. That's neat, but certainly not helpful to me. (unless it simply says I need to find a real camera repair place and have them do it?)

Hi, mikeno62, I just acquired a Yachica-Mat 124 (without the G). Film was able to advance, but the shutter did not fire. I was able to press the shutter button, but leafs did not open in the lens. After pressing the shutter button, was able to advance to next frame. Still, shutter button can push, but leafs not open? I am wondering if this could be fixed myself? I searched up your videos but did not find this problem on Yashica MAT 124. Thanks

Just curious, what does the washer 11:26 do? I checked the repair manual and they seems to be called “regulating washer”
They were put in to adjust the focus/angle of the lens assembly

I'm at the stage of removing the escapement to clean it (around the 58 minute mark) but cant seem to undo those slotted screws - my screwdriver is the right size but it just seems to slip over the top of them and strip the screws a little which is not good at all, and I dont want to use any penetrating oil on the screws to loosen them in case it gets into other mechanisms in the shutter.
Just wondering what screwdriver you used and what type would be advisable for unscrewing bits of the shutter mecahnism? Thanks :)

Hello! I have lost the flash sync spring that you showed how to remove at 25:09! How can I replace it?? Is it even possible to find a replacement? Will this mean that the camera will not sync with flash ever again? Please help! I havefound spring steel wire but don't know the diameter, 0.1mm, 0.2mm, 0.25mm. I wouldn't say it is 0.3mm because it seems too thick going by memory. Can someone confirm?

QUESTION: If I don't open the shutter plate, and dip the whole thing in alcohol, to remove oil from the shutter and aperture flaps, will that work?
Hi do you have a medonstration on how to take apart this lens. I have the same exact camera but there is some cloudiness between the lens elements.
Also if the rear coating of the lens is degraded on almost half of the lens should I try to take it off or what do you recommend I do. Thank you!

To timer to work smoothly, by mistake I used wd40 from the outside. And I got myself in trouble. Now the wd40 is everywhere inside. What should I use to clean it off, alcohol?

You should get the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) ones. I recommend vessel brand. They're reasonably priced and good.

Hi! I took apart my slow gear in my Yashica Mat em (thinking it would come out in one piece like this model) but a tiny spring popped out and I’m not sure how to put it back now properly :( could you be of any assistance?! Thank you so much!
