Corb Lund’s writing is at home in the west. The story of the S Lazy H is one that is all too familiar to anyone, like us, who grew up around ranching. He is another in a long line of Canadian cowboys writing some of the best cowboy tunes out there. We fell in love with “Horse Soldier, Horse Soldier” years back and have always wanted to catch up with him for a video. To get to shoot in our hometown was an honor.

It was years ago now but I was driving my old Chevy S-10 home from a snow removal shift at around 3 in the morning and the CD player in the truck was a little worse for wear. I was exhausted. As I parked in my spot behind the house the Smalls CD I had been listening to skipped twice and ejected itself and the last radio station I was listening to started to play. On CBC2 at 3 in the morning was a live recording of Corb Lund playing in a local studio. I know this is ill-advised but I went inside and got the six pack I bought before work and sat in my truck to listen to the final hour of the performance. Corb played the S Lazy H for his final song and it brought a tear to my eye. Thanks, Corb, for your sincerity and authenticity.
Six generations is a long time. I’m a fourth generation dairy farmer and this song really hit hard. Statistics show you’re lucky to make it to 2 generations now a days. I’ve seen too many family business dissolve over the years due to greed.
1st gen they work hard and make it, 2nd gen maintains it and expands maybe, and 3rd throws it all away
It only takes one in a family. The idea of moving off for a grand life elsewhere, the new wicked worldview university’s teach, and greed.

A true masterpiece. I've listened to this song hundreds of times, and I love and hate how true it is.

Can’t give enough thumbs up!!! I get it, I cried my self to sleep nights when I helped build the houses on my grandpa’s farm. A half mile from the house I grew up in. I’m in the East and all 25 -40 head family dairy farms disappeared between 1990 and 2000. Replaced by developments and a few 1000+ cow farms that run the milk pumps 20 hours a day over 3 shifts.
Corb has some great songs. I've always liked Bible on the Dash. Just a dandy tune.

Roughest Neck Around, Hard on Equipment and Good Copenhagen are some of my favorites.
Song hits home. Just sold the family place. Not a spread like Corb sings about, just 10 acres, house and barn. And not generational or maybe it was, 47 years is a long time. Sad to see it go and will never return to it but it filled my life with memories.
I’m a butcher, not a rancher, but this still hits home. I work with the small family farm kind of places this song is all about. Butchers and ranchers are both being hit hard right now, and this sort of story will only become more and more common the way things are going.
This song tears out my heart. My dad was born on a tiny farm that I spent a lot of time at. I still have nightmares about developers coming in and tearing down the trees. Did a letter-writing campaign to keep them from widening the road that ran past because it would have taken out the giant white pines my grandpa planted when they moved in.
That story is so common and true. Children fighting over inheritance until it is all ruined and in the hands of rich. Beautiful Melancholy song.
I love the music Corb makes. This song is very near to me. It’s sad to see small agriculture disappearing and the love of that life going away due to the greed of your family.

Live and livin don’t equal. What takes a man a lifetime to accomplish another man can take in an instant. Songs like this remind me of that. We wonder why people just breath there last breath and throw there hands up. We as a people have failed to correct the balance in this country and we as a people are paying for it dearly. There is still hope but someone will half to get there hands dirty again. We have become a society of weak lazy non-caring people. It has to stop! There is a day of reckoning coming. Which side of the fence are you standing on!

For those not from the Canadian Prairies verse where he sings that he had to sell "30 sections" he is talking the land survey. I moved to Saskatchewan 2 years ago and I hear this term "sections" a lot from the farmers and now know what it is but never heard the term before I moved here! Common used term here. The whole Prairies were surveyed into one mile by one mile grid and then subdivided into four quarter sections that are half mile by half mile (approx 160 acres I believe).
Land is usually bought and sold by farmers by these quarter sections that they call "sections" and when they talk of the land they farm they talk about sections as in "I farm 25 sections" or "25 quarters". A young guy getting into farming might buy his "first section". So when he says he is forced to sell 30 sections it is a significant piece of land and would have been built up by his ancestors (each section being 160 acres). The first settler would have been granted a section to clear and farm generations before so over the years they built up, worked hard and increased their land holdings.
The tragedy being that just like that he had to sell it to settle with estranged family. All that passion and hard work gone. Just thought I'd share because I wouldn't have even noticed that verse a couple of years ago or known what a section was.
In the U.S., a section is a square mile equal to 640 acres. A half section is 320 acres, a quarter section is 160 acres and so forth. Here, 30 sections would be 19,200 acres. Anyone in production agriculture knows viability rests on acres and in country with a lower stocking rate this could very well be the threshold for profitability.
@@aaronmiller3613 thank you, our sections are the same size. I am in East central Saskatchewan and people talk about "quarters" more than sections around here. "I farm 30 quarters". Growing up in Ontario where 100 acres was a good sized piece of land I was in awe of the scope and scale of farms here :)

Seems like a lot of people are missing the fact we are gonna starve to death if we don’t help are farmers and ranchers stay in business. I was born into the livestock industry raising cattle and helping manage my families business a Livestock Auction Market. After my grandfather passed away we had to sale the stockyard because Dads brother and sisters wanted out or wanted to add more hands to the pot that didn’t contribute anything like the work my Father and I did. So after that we just had our home farm that I could keep about 125 steers on that I’d precondition for larger outfits out west. I couldn’t find any decent land to rent as was once an easy prospect to find. Those farms are all being spit up by the next generation because they have zero interest and don’t have the farming background at all anyway. It’s not easy but it’s rewarding I promise you that.

Shed more than a few for that place. We have about 190 acres which is big around these parts. I went off to college and became a teacher and I'm working double time to learn the ropes to take over when dad's too old for it.

First song I ever heard of corbs, was back in 2015/2016 on ' my playlist ' CBC radio. Normally I'm annoyed by that show. But this song caught my eye. I grew up amongst farmers, as a son of white collar folks.

Ya know, my family had a 5 thousand acre cattle ranch from 1850 to 1995. The estate was never put in trust and when my great grandfather died, the taxes were too much and a lower 500 acres were sold to cover it. Then my grandpas brother wanted a payout for the larger section and all was lost. These things are never pretty.
An uncle told my cousin when she moved away that she could move all she wanted, but she would have to forfeit any interest in their farm ahead of time to avoid this exact situation.

My favorite living storyteller.
Oh wow, now I’m having me a cry. My family just sold much of our property, though as Mr. Lund says, it’s not really a true story for my situation either.
In our case my generation has not worked the land at all, and my mother and her siblings leased it to energy development as well as to active operators. Ultimately the disagreement between the siblings made it easier to sell than to manage. The sale was to a local ag operator, so it won’t be turned into housing. Lol we didn’t own 30 sections either.
All this to say there were threads to relate to in this song, and even though Ag’s cultural influence FAR outweighs its economic impact in WY, it doesn’t take away the fact the current legal system for conservation and land management is built around the assumption that the ranches would always be there, and conservation of these spaces relies on the few left still doing it to be good stewards of the water and land. This is pressure that grows harder to bear as time passes. It also doesn’t take away my time on that property as a child and young adult, looking out over the wheat and prairie and soaking it all in.
Ultimately I am glad it has been dealt with and that the family was able to make some money off the sale, my parents bought long term care insurance with the proceeds, which is some peace of mind for them and my sister and I. Support your local conservation association

I lived this.... My great grandmothers place is all that's left... It's up for sale so more assholes from Dallas can build cabins ... Almost two hundred years of Ranching gone to build more Cabin's.
