Gosh, thank you for your time and this video. You made my understanding of Flaps 110% better. I just acquired a P-47, as you pointed out it has flaps. But when I was setting the rates and switches I was baffled by the fact that on 0 the flaps were retracted. The first position was like 15% down and the 2nd position position was like 40%. It was blowing my mind. I was so confused. So thank you so much
I mostly fly EDF’s and some warbirds which all have flaps. I put my transmitter’s flight modes on the flap switch and enable F-mode trims. This gives me separate trims for each position of the flaps and I can adjust the trim in the air. With the flaps down, I trim my planes to fly hands off just above the stall speed. I use 15 degrees for takeoff and 40 degrees for landing, if the wind is calm. You shouldn’t use full flaps in a crosswind or strong winds. If your plane climbs on downwind when you lower the flaps, you need to slow down more before lowering them. I use the analog or stick position switch on my throttle stick to prevent the flaps from moving to the landing position if my throttle is above 50%. This makes touch-and-goes super easy because I can land with landing flaps and when I open the throttle, the flaps will automatically come up to the takeoff position before the plane leaves the ground.
My favorite use of flaps is from an @xjet video. He applied full flaps to a foam plane flying straight and level. He initiated a loop using the flaps. My memory says he did it just using the flaps.
I use flaps on my warbirds. Gets them up nice with take off flap and shortens landings with landing flaps. Due to our field has short runways based on the direction of the wind. Keep flying
Great video and so true. I don’t use and or use very little flaps and fly mostly warbirds. The critics at the field like to comment on the fact I don’t use them, but then i also get great comments on greasing my landings. I love coming in on 2 wheels, then rolling out as the tail settles. Thats just me. I personally get nerve racked dialing in flaps on new airplane, so i just skip that step, lol. Happy New Years.
A great plane to fly with flaps is the H9 Ultra Stick 30. That thing lumbers around nicely on full flaps. And if you start throwing in some Crow it gets really fun.
Just watched this video on flap usage and I found it really interesting and informative. I've only been in the hobby for about 3 weeks now and been having a blast! I'm learning on the Apprentice STS 1.5m and for being brand new the SAFE on that plane is an amazing help. Also, my club president gave me an older P-51 that was made by Hobby People, but never taken out of the box. From what I understand they are no long in business. I was thinking about adding flaps when I do get to the point of being able to maneuver and control this aircraft. However, after watching your video I'm not so quite sure now. I know the time will come when I make my decision, but the learning involved with all aspects of this hobby is truly amazing. I want to thank you, as well as others, for the fantastic videos you all make. Keep up the good work. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching more.
I m an old fart .😊 didn't start fly ing till I turned 75 ,my son gave me a drone for my 75th birthday to get me out of the house .I joined an rc flying club and was hooked .I've scratch built over 10 aircraft bought a couple of gliders and kits .crashed most of them 😢but repaired them. I spend sleepless nights watching videos . I've got a lot to learn .just got my first one with flaps .😊
I haven't flown remote planes since my teenage years. Now 37 and I have a 3D printer working to make a RC submarine. But getting my niece and nephew a couple of quads to see how they do.
@@dagtheaviator curious, what would cause servos to function, power coming from 11v to a 5v20A reg, but the power to motor Ch3 gives nothing... I even get throttle warning when powering on remote. Bat->reg-> Speed Control (to motor and ch3 input on flight control) flight control and remote will "balance" but throttle give me 0 speed.
I would apply the flaps quick when landing to slow down but only for a short time. Does that make sense? Like a quick brake. I'm very new to RC flying.
Got the umx turbo timber first plane with flaps did take off flaps and looped out. Trying to learn hahaha fortunately I only needed a new spinner and prop. But she still flys so I tried with out elevator and she took off beautifully. Now it's time to learn landing flaps thankfully it's a stol high wing so when I get in trouble she glides well.
Hi. Just one comment on what you said about airspeed/telemetry. I agree that a voice calling out airspeed would be absolutely useless but since I have the option of using my radios variometer function for airspeed telemetry it´s highly useful. In fact I use it all the time on all my models. It´s set up so that the vario shuts up when I´m on my target airspeed, and you get the buuuuu and the beep sounds when you are too slow or too fast respectively. That way I can set up a landing with the model as a small point on the horizon, and fly the glideslope just using throttle to make sure that I hit the touch down zone exactly, and using the elevator to keep the desired speed. As a side note, my main model at the moment is a 103in glider tug weighing in at around 42-44lb which gives a cube wing loading of around 14. But since it also sports an 18% fully symmetrical airfoil it flies very dosile and lands very easily. It does use up a bit of rwy, but since it´s almost always windy in Denmark this is not a problem, as there is normally a healthy head wind during landing.

With your Avanti you mentioned 15 degree and 40 degree flaps. Can you translate that into mm of travel from flaps up. Also what percentage of down elevator do you mix with each of those flap settings? Thank you, Ken
Sorry for the late reply. 15 degrees is about 8mm and 40 degrees is about 20mm. I have about 1mm down elevator trim at 15 degrees and about 1.5-2.0mm at 40 degrees.
Yep flaps, take off flaps plane takes off real fast, and yes knowing you switch helps, could not find my switch and over it goes {crash} one thing you do learn is how to fix your planes let to learn your video help
I’ve only been flying RC a few years, I consider myself an intermediate pilot. Recently got my 1st EDF and it will also be my 1st experience with flaps. You mentioned that you use flaps with your Avanti, 15% takeoff & 40% landing. I would appreciate a little more information about how & why you use the flaps on an EDF. P.S. The club airstrip is well maintained grass, & my new model is an Arrows Marlin.

My park flyer (cub) pitches up alot when applying flaps... Also taking off with full flaps takes 3m, without 30m.. Sure, you don't need them, but you could say same for rudder... etc.
I have to disagree a bit. I build a lot of extremely long range fpv planes that I send out 40-50km away and back. These planes usually have very high wing loading and absolutely need flaps to come in for a slow landing - especially with all that battery weight :)
You are talking about one specific application of an air frame. This video is for the newbies that are getting into flying all sorts of warbirds and scale general aviation aircraft. Sure, you’re always going to find one or two examples were flaps would absolutely be necessary, but my videos are talking in a general sense for newbies, not experts like you.

Good stuff, made me think of airspeed and relative angle of attack. If a person can keep it simple no flaps at first best.
