- Between June 3rd and June 8th, 2023, our family biked along the Via Francigena from Pavia to Lucca. This documents our 4-part journey toward Rome.
This was part of a 5 month long family bike tour of Europe we did on sabbatical.

So nice.
Do you find that everyone will help you with your bike lockup or do you contact your lodger first to inquire then choose that place to stay?
We brought 2 locks for our 4 bikes. At campgrounds, we just locked the bikes together unless we left the campground, then we locked them to whatever we could. On our pilgrimage routes, the albergues always had a place to lock bikes (also see bicigrino.com). Elsewhere (hotel/apartment), we made sure they could accommodate our bikes. Our bikes are also about as low-end as they come which also serves as a theft deterrent.
Why is it so empty? Is it because the people where having a siesta?
We were in Piacenza on a Sunday morning so it was quiet. Most of our route was on back roads so just fewer cars overall. But overall, we did see a lot of lightly populated small towns in Italy (also in Spain) that is, I think, attributable to long term rural-urban migration patterns (maybe some Italians can weigh in.) But there is also some selection bias in how we take videos - I'm less apt to start recording when things are busy and I have to really concentrate on navigation and keeping safe.
