Why You Need Lacing Strips and How to Make Them || Make Your Corsets Easier

  • Hello Friends!
    I have recently need thinking that I needed a pair of lacing strips for my corset making endeavors, and I thought I would make a video to show you how hat is done! What are lacing strips? They are basically the back, grommeted part of the corset, but in separate strip format. You keep them separate from any corsets you are working on and then use them while you are fitting your different corsets so that you don't have to grommet or make eyelets over and over again while you go through mockup after mockup. They also help you fit that very back panel and tell you where it should be placed in relation to the panels before it. These strips make life a lot easier and corset making goes so much more quickly!
    I hope you enjoy this video! If you liked this video, please give it a thumbs up and if you are new here, please subscribe!

    That thing is NOT a sewing machine, it's a Transformer. A baby one.
    And the "Let's be realistic... a year" got a bark of laughter out of me. Girl, I feel ya! (I should be making me a Victorian corset like I did my stays, I have all I need for it, but I've been on a sewing vacation... Oh well, I'll make it when I'll make it)

      @@stevezytveld6585 Cathy my grandmother always said she didn’t remember but if someone spoke slowly she could understand. She was actually stolen back from the school by her father and hidden up north with a white family. Until she died she powdered her face to look paler and died her hair brown. She told me that brown hair was a nice respectable colour. Looking back I see that she spent her life hiding. She was such a smart strong woman. She actually started a trading business during the depression and was one of the only people in the area to have peanut butter. There was only one story she told about her time in the school. Pauline Johnson came with dignitaries and reporters. My grandmother was given a signed copy of her book of poetry which was taken away with a nasty comment after everyone left. My parents found a copy years later it was signed and had a beautiful leather dust cover. She slept with it under her pillow the rest of her life. There’s debate among the family on which school she was in I’m not sure I want to know. Though I would love to see the reports after she was stolen back!
      I’m sure that snowbirds will have the missing man formation. I haven’t been able to find orange shirts anywhere well except the ones with stolen artwork on them. I will try again this weekend. If all else fails I will grab some material and make t-shirts. I will also grab fabric paint or fabric crayons and use our own artwork. The pictures of the paint on the church in Calgary is heartbreaking, poignant and something that will always be what I see when thinking about this time.

Not too mention the number of times they had things like tuberculosis run through the schools. I also wonder about the Indian hospitals I don’t know if the graves there were marked or if there’s any documentation around.

    If you did two or three different types of corsets would it be a good idea to have one type of lacing strip for each one?

    • @lynndragon2536
      @lynndragon2536 Před 3 lety +2

      Only if you are doing ones with drastically different lacing types such as 1700s stays vs Victorian corsets otherwise the lacing is pretty much gonna work fine for a variety of corsets

    What fabric do you use for corsets noelle?

  • @InspiredXReflections
    @InspiredXReflections Před rokem

    I just started with my grommets on my corset and when I used the awl it pulled the fibers so tight they make like an X around the hole. Now my fabric looks wavy around it. Is that just going to happen when you don’t cut the hole out? I feel like the back of my corset is going to look really messy now😭😭

    • @Costuming_Drama
      @Costuming_Drama  Před rokem +1

      I usually use two awls to open the hole and I go very very slowly and work the fabric if it’s super tightly woven like that. It does happen, but I haven’t had it happen in a long time. Try working your fabric a bit to loosen up the fibers and maybe using some steam from your iron while you do that.

    • @InspiredXReflections
      @InspiredXReflections Před rokem

      @@Costuming_Drama Thank for replying!! It’s just frustrating the rest of the corset looks amazing. 😢 Now I’m going to have to take the back panels off and try again. I tried ironing it after to try to loosen it but it didn’t really do anything. Maybe with that fabric it would be better to put in the grommets before cutting out the pattern & sewing it together. When I did the tester piece it didn’t pull or warp. So maybe if the edges were free it wouldn’t pull. Idk😳 haha 20th times the charm!

      I’m still using my first machine which I got used in the late 80’s. It has 12 stitches and there’s really nothing I can’t do. Check out the used market or see if a relative has one tucked away that they can lend or give you. As long as it can zigzag your good

I also learned of two brands our long time sewers enjoyed using and that'll be reliable as a used machine as long as it is in working condition when I buy it. Thank you all.💚🤗
