  • Hello all! Welcome to my CoCoVid video, I hope you enjoy it! I got a little ambitious with how many designs I could include in a single video (I'm new to making videos and misjudged it 😅). I tried to make sure the instructions for the individual designs are still clear, but if you have any questions just drop a comment below and I'd be happy to help you out!
    GIVEAWAY
I'm giving away a blank flossing sampler and 2 spools of silk embroidery thread, so that one lucky person can try out all of these designs without having to do any of the prep work. This is being hosted on my instagram page (@linapiprek) and all details on how to enter are located there!
    / linapiprek
    HANDOUT
I’ve put together a printable handout with some notes about flossing and a full-scale copy of my sampler! You can use this to take more detailed measurements, to scale the designs up or down for different size boning channels, or simply to have a closer look:
    drive.google.com/file/d/18ruA...

If you’d like to see more videos from all the creators participating in CoCoVid, there is a downloadable program which lists all the videos and links directly to each person’s channel here:

    USEFUL RESOURCES
The Symington Collection is a collection of corsets, samples, and patterns from the Symington Corset Company and their competitors, it is housed by the Leicestershire County Council museum service here in the UK. It is particularly notable for how comprehensive it is (the company kept great records!), and for how willing its curators are to share the knowledge that comes with such a collection. I believe they’re an invaluable resource if you have an interest in Victorian corsetry, and I highly recommend checking them out.
There are photos of the collection here:
    imageleicestershire.org.uk/vi...
And you can buy copies of Victorian corset patterns from them here:
    imageleicestershire.org.uk/vi...
Devere Yarns sell beautiful embroidery threads. Their silk thread in 36 thickness is my current favorite to use for flossing, and they’re the best value for silk embroidery thread that I’ve found. I use about 15m of thread to do a fairly elaborate flossing design on a whole corset, and their spools have 50m for the same cost that I was previously spending on 10m.
    www.devereyarns.co.uk/
    P.S.
I know my audio jumps up and down throughout the video. I did my best to fix it but as it turns out, placing your camera between yourself and your sewing (and continually moving your face closer and further away from it), is not the best way to get good audio! Perhaps I should do actual voiceovers rather than explain as I go, I'm working on it 😊

Perfect timing, I've just finished cutting out the fabric for my first corset. This is the motivation I need to finish it quickly as I dream of flossing designs. You picked really pretty examples. Thank you for using the different boning options/styles. It was so informative. Thank you!

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Including a range of options that work for different corsets was one of my top “must haves” when I was putting this together, so I’m glad it was useful 😊

I’m so glad! That’s the reason I wanted to make the video: it’s so straightforward but there’s relatively little information about it out there (compared to things like shifts, for example). Hopefully there will be even more videos about it as costube continues to grow 😊

Thank you very much for this incredibly detailed video. You are a great teacher. Flossing is a form of art. By giving the basics as well as showing different designs for different boning materials the principles become very clear. I especially liked seeing silk floss and embroidery floss compared next to each other. I feel very confident in stitching my own flossing designs for all different kinds of stays and corsets now. Thank you!

Finished up watching your video this morning.
Thank you so much for this invaluable resource! I learned a lot - in particular from how you passed the back stitches under the fabric, seeing the comparison of the embroidery thread vs. silk twist, and seeing how you used the accumulated threads in the center of the motif at 29:55 to pass the active thread underneath instead of making the hole even more full!!

Coming to this rather late but just to say thank you! Long? Yes, but so worth it. It's saved. I have my first corset finished apart from the flossing so perfect timing. I am so glad I couldn't find the right colour in embroidery floss to match the ribbon as I too really like the crisper look. Thanks for the recommendation of the de vere - heading there to see their blues although if I can't find the exact match I think the 3 colour option would be a great alternative. Thank you once again. BTW I'm not bothered about the changing audio when the content is so good and the voice measured. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos, Peta :-)

Just found your channel, CZcams is awesome. That was cool😎. We need more instructional videos like this, very well done. I want to make a few corsets. I got the pretty housemaid corded corset pattern and I have a few other ones and I was wondering how to do the flossing. Looks as easy as doing regular embroidery. 😊 I like the sampler format. Good to practice. Young girls used to have to do a sampler to show off thier skills. Letters and numbers and lots of flowers and vines, some got quite elaborate. Sometimes they were framed sometimes they were made into stuff like pillows or book covers. A dying art that needs to be brought back.

Just getting to this video from #CoCoVid and I think that a sampler for flossing details is a great idea! I think it takes some of the edge off all the anxiety of making a corset and can allow you to experiment with designs without rendering the corset you've made useless afterwards! (Although, no guarantees!)
I intend on making a few myself with varying degrees of decoration on them so I'll be referring to this video a lot in the future. Thanks for participating and hope you enjoyed the event as well!

I took a look at the threads from DeVere and immediately heard my wallet scream in terror 😂💾💾💾 They are so beautiful and I want literally all of them! Thank you for the great video, I love the designs!

I love your video. I'm just curious if you have experimented with silk embroidery floss? I'm so excited to try this

Thank you! The DeVere ones are sold as embroidery thread, but I haven’t tried the silk ones that come in skeins like the synthetic embroidery floss. I always assumed they would be loosely plied and I really like “clean” look you get from the tightly twisted ones, so I guess I just never bothered to actually check. 😅 I’d actually be curious to see the difference as well though, it would be interesting to put together another comparison at some point with each thread side by side.

Thank you for such an informational video. This was made just in time for my first corset pattern. I do wish that there were more links for the materials listed. Like where did you get the punchy tool?! You did an amazing job with the time stamps.

Thanks! I can list more materials in future, I didn’t think anyone would be interested in the basic stuff! I got the hole punch online, if you search for “leather hole punch” you find lots of similar ones 😊

Wow, now I definitely want to do a flossing sampler for myself, even if I think I'll do a smaller one. :D How small are the punched holes in the whalebone and how easy is it to make them with the hole punch?

    • @LinaPiprek
      @LinaPiprek  Pƙed 4 lety +2

The ones I showed in the video are about 2mm across and I just used the smallest setting on my hole punch for them; they were very easy to do because I used 7x1mm synthetic whalebone for the sampler. However, I know a lot of people prefer the 6x1.5 mm for corsets, which would be harder to punch through and 2mm might be a little too big for the hole. Personally I’ve drilled a hole in the narrower bones with a 1 or 1.5 mm drill bit and that worked fine as well. I hope that’s not too over complicated, short answer: between 1-2mm!

@@LinaPiprek Thanks for the tip! And that was not over complicated, I appreciate the extra information because I wouldn't even have thought to ask about it. :)

Just getting around to watching your video. Paused briefly to say that if you add a timestamp with 00:00 (call it "introduction" or "start") before your other timestamps in the description, then you'll see them like chapters on the video itself in the progress bar. Now to watch the rest ... !!

The blue one that I use during the instructions is from Muji, they have an online shop if you’re not close to any stores. The frixion ones work the same way and are usually easy to find on amazon or in office stores.
