    subed. coco peat and sand 80-20? direct sunlight? when can you plant in ground? what time of year best to do this?

    • @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai
      @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi NoSunBeach, welcome to the channel. Thank you for subscribing, please keep up the support.
      - The combination Cocopeat 80-20 would work if you are dealing with cool temperatures around 25-30 degree celsius if more then you will have to bring down cocopeat content and add garden soil- so that would be 50% garden soil + 20% cocopeat + 30% sand
      - No direct sunlight until you see 4-5 sets of leaves
      - Transplantation is advised only after 4 months (less if you see flowers which normally takes about 2.5 to 3 months if you are 'lucky' and also depends on the bougainvillea variety)
      - Bougainvillea cuttings can be started any time of the year, just that extreme cold, let us say temperature below 20 degree celsius should be avoided. If your base gets rains in specific months- make sure you utilize the time to start some cuttings as you will get the best results
      Good luck and if there is anything else, please feel free to share. Thank you again.

    Hi, I really loved your video, can you please tell me how to water the cuttings,after propagating Do we have to give water to the cuttings everyday?

    • @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai
      @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you so much, means a lot😊
      The cuttings should be in shade at all times and water in the evenings every 3 days (if average size pot is used with drainage hole) and every day (if you are using a disposable tea/coffee cup with drainage hole). So all in all, you got to keep the soil moist at all times- not too much not too less- just about right depending on the weather and other factors.
      Once the cuttings show leaves, you can give them a couple hours of sun but keep the watering schedule the same as before. If there is anything else, please let me know and we can discuss it again.

      You're so welcome Nawal, once again. Kudos and congratulations!! Small trees will bear flowers and fruits in due time, they might stay small because you will prune them to the base however the amount of months wont differ much so let us say a mango tree that was grown in a nursery is usually grafted and should fruit within three to four years. Seedling trees may take five to eight years. In case there is anything else you would like to have a discussion on, please feel free to reach out. Thank you very much.

      For good 2-2.5 months you got to find a nice shaded spot outdoors for these cuttings and only after they have signs of full-fledged growth, you should introduce them to the sunlight.Also know, between introduction of sunlight and transplantation, there has to be a 30-day period.Yes, undoubtedly, cinnamon works great!! Anything else, please let me know.

    Hi, useful information, thank you. I have a question and a comment. One, what branch should one take the cutting from? ie one that has flowers on it already, or does it not matter? Two, can I suggest you omit the music? It adds nothing to your presentation, instead it detracts from it as it distracts from your voice since it is louder than your voice, which means I have to turn sound right down therefore missing your instructions. Thanks.

      Thank you and you're so welcome 👍
      Sure, great of you to share your thoughts and questions.
      One (Great question by the way)- Flowers or no flowers, the most important thing is that the mother plant should be 3+ years old. Now if you take a cutting from a already flowering branch, after your cutting is successful it would be flower way earlier (a good 3-4 months) then the one where there were no flowers to start with. So there is just that otherwise both the cuttings would do great in similar conditions.
      Two (Valid point you raise there)- Sure, thank you for sharing that, I agree and will try and rectify all that in future videos. If at all I could make up for that I would- by answering any questions you have, anytime, I promise I will write back to you, no problem with that 👍

      I will be quite honest here, I have raised Bougainvilleas in thousands and have never used the plastic bag. Moreover, I am based in Dubai and it can get really dry for 6-7 months, still, things work pretty nicely. So I would suggest if you do other things right, it's not required at all.

    Chhikara sahab.....I am going to follow your technique to plant 50 odd cuttings of different varieties of BV tomorrow.
    I have 1 question. The plants from which in will take cutting is about 45mins driving from my house....from cutting till plantation there will be gap of about 1hour....any precautions to be taken??

    • @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai
      @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai  Před 4 lety

      Hooda sahab, Ram Ram!!
      Welcome, great to have you here on the channel. Wow, 50 cuttings, that is super and I am sure you will get the desired results. 45 mins wait won't do any harm in fact it would give the cuttings (don't make the cuttings here, take home with one cut and do the rest of the things- scarring, making smaller pieces) sometime to get callous so don't worry about it. Also, don't remove the leaves, just have some marks on each of them at the base so that you don't confuse the base and top later, it gets tricky trust me!
      Just that once you home, please put them (the big ones without scarring or even making small cuttings ready for soil) in water if the wait is more than 2 hours before putting them in cinnamon and water solution. If you can manage then put them in cinnamon water directly as soon as you are home, cutting them into desired lengths. And within 4 hours they should be in pre-soaked styrofoam tea cups with a small drainage hole. Water them every day in evenings and keep them in a shaded area.
      If you still have any other questions, please let me know and we can have another discussion. Please don't hesitate in posting a question anytime and you sure will get a response. Also, please make sure you stay subscribed and keep up the support. Cheers, brother!!

    I have tried so many times to propagate, with no success. Clearly I dont have green fingers. Does it have something to do with the climate?. I live in SAfrica.

    • @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai
      @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai  Před 3 lety +2

      Hmmmmm.......I see. Let us try and fix that with a small discussion. Also, I think if it can be done in such hot weather of Dubai, it can easily be done anywhere else in the world, not just in South Africa 😊. So what kind of weather you would have for the next 6 months?? As we would have winters with a temperature ranging from 15 degrees- 30 degrees Celsius, yes, that's what winters are here all about.
      I don't know exactly what's going on with you and the cuttings, still, let me try and list down a few possible scenarios where the cuttings would not be successful-
      1. You messed up the top and bottom ends of the cuttings. It happens with me as well so you got to be careful when you cut a branch, mark/ scar the bottom part immediately so that later on, you know exactly which end will go into the soil
      2. The parent plant is less than 2 years old and cuttings are all green or greenish-brown, you need mature brown cuttings from a plant that is 4+ years old
      3. After you procure the cuttings, you left them to dry out for a day or even more
      4. Once potted, they need to be in the shade for 2-3 weeks
      5. Could also be you didn't scar it properly, gently scratch the lower part until you see some green part and that would it, please don't go any further
      6. The size of the cutting should be anywhere between 6-8 inches
      7. Soil Mix- 50% garden soil + 50% cocopeat
      8. It could also be the simplest of the reasons- may be the cuttings were disturbed by kids or pets (just a shake or even pulled out and put back again), if that happens, no way they would pick up again
      One or more of these could be the reason, I hope you will be able to identify it and fix it😊 👍
      Also, please check out this playlist- Brainstorming Bougainvillea (especially the most recent ones, if you cannot go through all of them)

    Hi and thank you for your videos, I just subscribed. I have a couple of questions for you.
    I see a lot of bougainvillea propagation videos on CZcams where they use the ICU (plastic bag/bottle over the top to created greenhouse effect) but I notice that you do not use this method. What is your opinion on this method vs without it like you are doing?
    Also, when do finally put your small plants/cuttings into full sun?

      That won't be necessary. I am in Dubai and you must know that it is one of the toughest areas to raise plants; I have never used plastic bags, not even for a graft.
      However, if you live in an absolute dry area, please use it otherwise don't bother. Moreover, it might prove to be a reason that your cuttings would rot.
      And where do you live?

    • @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai

      You are right, there are a lot of ICU method videos on the platform and your observation is spot on too, I don’t use it. Honestly, I feel it doesn’t have any significant effect on the success of a cutting. That’s basically to help with the moisture loss and tricking the cuttings by creating an environment so that the cuttings shoot out and to counter the drying up of cuttings I would rather go with a smaller sized cutting. Anyway, you would agree, that the plastic will have to go at some point in time and the plant will have to deal with what the native climate is, so why not start by giving it the roughest of conditions right in the beginning.

      Bougainvillea cuttings can be propagated in any month, just that too hot and too cold months should be avoided. The best months- monsoons are perfect, you will get cent percent results if you do it right!! I wish you great energy and luck and I am sure you will do great.

      @@GauravChhikaraGardenDubai It's now the monsoons, so my question is, would it be okay to plant directly out into the soil, or will the occasional sunny day be too much for it? Thanks.

      Hi Joe, it would be okay if you confirm that the humidity would be in high 70s or even more then the sun won't matter 😊👍. Just one thing- keep the cutting to a minimum size- between 5 and 7 inches. I am sure it will work out great for you. If there is anything else, please let me know and we can have another discussion. Thanks again. Cheers!!

      I don't know exactly what's going on with your cuttings, still, let me try and list down a few possible scenarios where the cuttings would not be successful-
      ⁕ What kind of weather you had last month and this month (these cuttings work best in temperatures between 18-35 degree Celsius)
      ⁕ You messed up the top and bottom ends of the cuttings. It happens with me as well so you got to be careful when you cut a branch, mark/ scar the bottom part immediately so that later on, you know exactly which end will go into the soil
      ⁕ The parent plant is less than 2 years old and cuttings are all green or greenish-brown, you need mature brown cuttings from a plant that is 4+ years old
      ⁕ After you procure the cuttings, you left them to dry out for a day or even more
      ⁕ Once potted, they need to be in the shade for 2-3 weeks
      ⁕ Could also be you didn't scar it properly, gently scratch the lower part until you see some green part and that would it, please don't go any further
      ⁕ The size of the cutting should be anywhere between 6-8 inches
      ⁕ Soil Mix- 50% garden soil + 50% cocopeat
      ⁕ It could also be the simplest of the reasons- may be the cuttings were disturbed by kids or pets (just a shake or even pulled out and put back again), if that happens, no way they would pick up again
      One or more of these could be the reason, I hope you will be able to identify it and fix it😊 👍
