  • UPGRADING a 33 Year Old SAILING Boat I RAYMARINE Autopilot Installation I Ep. 44
    In this episode of Sailing Indiana our sailing couple vlog, we show you whats next as we one day look to sail around the world. We finally get our Raymarine Autopilot installed! That’s right we’ll be able to make cups of tea on the move!
    We get a new Scanstrut pod for the binnacle and a Scantrut Rokk wireless phone charging mount, so we have all the gear and no idea as we continue to
    The Raymarine Autopilot is one of two major upgrades we had planned for our 33 year old sailing boar this year. This involves connecting the Raymarine linear drive, ACU200, GPS Receiver and Autopilot control head, together to make this work. Most Raymarine linear drives are fibre glassed in place, however we take a different approach.
    We take Indiana out of the marina for her first sea trial to check everything is working and we also see a boat a run aground right outside our berth!

      Thanks Andrew, us too!! We’re really hoping we can get down to Cornwall this year, so let’s see🤞🏼
      Solar panels are the next big job!

    Keep the rigging up and the water out; anything beyond that is all conveniences

    Now that’s a nice set up. I’m sure it’ll serve you well. I have a tiller set up and can’t wait to see how it works. Thanks for another great video, be safe, see ya next week.

    I was worried, the first time I tried to view your video it was marked as private. Good to see the upgrades you are doing.

    You mentioned solar panels which will be a must if you use the auto pilot a lot, as it consumes quite a lot of power! I opted for folding panels that I deploy when I arrive in port but in hind sight I really need the extra power when sailing on long passages. I sail solo and use the auto pilot a lot. I’m now looking at hard panels that mount on the guard wires near the cockpit, they are then out of the way at sea and stow neatly when not needed. I can’t bring myself to cover the limited deck space I have, or build a gantry like a blue water cruiser! BTW a simple bungy cord rigged around the wheel and attached to something near steers my boat really well to windward! If you get in the sea miles the priorities naturally surface to the top of the list! Enjoy!

      Thanks for watching again Mike!! We are definitely thinking we will need some solar now, due to the autopilot. It will be a must have too when we plan on being at anchor for any period of time. We’re looking into a gantry, mainly for solar but it will also be useful to help stow a dingy if we get davits attached and another plus, it might give us a bit of shade when in the cockpit! It’s another big expense, plus the solar, but we think it’ll be worth it for the longer passages and sailing abroad🤞🏼

    As I watched I wondered how many people have made a real hash of trying to fit this gear themselves?
    Delighted to see what's what.

      Thanks for watching again Edward! That is a good point you raise, especially when mounting the linear drive, that is something we really didn’t want to get wrong😬 And as for electrics… we aren’t brave enough to have a go at that ourselves yet!

    I have the same Raymarine Auto Pilot mine is ACU 400 cause I have a bigger rudder and longer hull. I installed this all myself and yours is going to be just right. It mainly depends on the location of the rudder and how it is set up as to how you install the drive unit. Looks good you will have many fun days and nights sailing with out having to go about it hand steering.

      @SailingIndiana  Před 2 lety

      Ah awesome! Kudos on installing yourself. You are definitely braver and more knowledgeable than us. We left that up to the expert. We are really excited to put it to use and get out for some longer passages now. Thanks for watching 🙏🏼⛵️☺️

    In reference to the silting up of Brighton Marina and the frequent occurrence of boats grounding... there was a time in the 80's when all berths on every pontoon were fully accessible at all states of the tide.... the entrance was full depth for nearly every draft of vessel even at low water springs... before HMS Cavalier was moved to Chatham, it was berthed in the marina, something that would be impossible now. That size of vessel would never be able to make the entrance channel at any state of any tide.. Yes, the current management do dredge every year, but it's minimal, just enough to keep the marina operating. The current state of access in the marina is the result of pure neglect.

    Mount is fine. If you have high loads it will come from rudder pressure under very high duress situations not normal. Just look for any gelcoat cracks ro the right of the mount which would show flex, unlikely. Did you fix your starting issue?

    • @SailingIndiana
      @SailingIndiana  Před 2 lety +1

      Awesome thank for this advice! The engine is running again, still a little slow to start but we think we’ve found a work around by priming using the lift pump and she’s starting a lot quicker, which is telling us there’s an issue on the low pressure fuel side, so nothing major but will get it fixed soon 🙏🏼⛵️☺️

    Wish we had that new gear. The mount looks sufficient, what did they bed the backing plate with, butyl tape or 4200?

      It’s working great for us and should be a great fit for the Bavaria 30. We really need to do some more sailing to properly test it out, so watch this space!🤞🏼😅
