ORCA ATTACKS Not Our Main Concern SAILING Portuguese Coast I Ep. 87
Hey Crew! Welcome back to Sailing Indiana! 🌊⚓
Join us on our latest adventure as we sail from Matosinhos to Figueira de Foz along the beautiful Portuguese coast. This episode is packed with excitement as we are not only on Orca watch, but we came across more dangers...🐋🎣 So, its safe to say, Orca attacks were not our main concern!
If you are not familiar with the orca attacks (interactions) -- since 2020 the Orca's around the Spanish and Portuguese Coast have been 'playing' with sailboats, biting off rudders and unfortunately, in some instances, boats have been sunk. So, not ideal when your sailboat is also your full time home!
Come along for the ride as we navigate through tricky waters, share some laughs, and soak in the stunning coastal views.
It's all part of the fun (and challenges) of life at sea! Whether you're a seasoned sailor or just love the ocean, you won't want to miss this one.
Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more sailing adventures with us!

    I notice at 13:37 seconds that your fire blanket is not in a good position. If you ever have a galley fire, you possibly would not be able to get it out of the wall fixing. On my yacht, I have two fire blankets, one in the forepeak and the second at the companionways steps from the cockpit, both some distance from the galley which is amidships. In a panic situation, it might burst into flames when you are away from the galley and to then being able to get back and successfully get hold of the fire blanket is very important. I did two fire fighting courses in the Royal Navy at HMS Phoenix Fire-fighting Training establishment and have done refresher courses in the Civil Service.

      @@SailingIndiana It wasn't a dig at you specifically, it was just a observation. I have seen far, FAR worse, where the fire blanket has been mounted directly BEHIND the cooker. There would be no chance of using it in a galley fire as the crew would be beaten back by the heat and the flames, not to mention any spilt fat from the pan that is on fire. Imagine that on a rolling yacht in heavy seas and not being able to get at the fire blanket, it doesn't bear thinking about. Fires in the galley seem to start when no one is watching, they just might have stepped away for just a moment or two and when they return, they can't get near the fire. :(

    • @davidswheatley-talesfromth1796
      @davidswheatley-talesfromth1796 Před 21 hodinou

      @@SailingIndiana It is best to have the fire blanket at the bottom of the companionway so that anyone arriving down from the cockpit can grab it straight away on their way to tackling any fire. Possibly near the VHF/SSB radio near the chart table. Also, if the duty cook is badly burnt (clothes on fire), the helmsman can grab it when attempting a rescue as he/she arrives below deck. Companionway steps to the galley can be no more that half a second or so, away from the fire if that, and anyone running FROM a galley fire would automatically make for the cockpit to either get out, get help or get fresh air. If the galley is on fire, the last thing you need to do is stand there, trying to get the frigging fire blanket out of its canister or valise. If in a moment of doubt GET OUT. You might always be able to think and return to the fire a few of moments later WITH the fire blanket, once you have gathered your thoughts.

      Good question! It’s a trick the local fishermen have used for some time, to keep the orca away from fishing nets and their tuna. Nice video again guys. And on life jackets: Being a solosailer on windvane or autopilot I just wear a harness tethered to a strong point. Mainsail sheet most of the time. Short tether keeps me secured in the cockpit. Risky thing about life jackets is that most people use the lifelines on top of the stantions to tether to or life lines on starboard and port. As soon as you fall over board, especially on the leeward side, you can drown within minutes, even if the jacket inflates. The waterflow will take you down. My advice: Have a life line from the bow to the cockpit, along the center of the boat, and use short tethers, making sure you do not go over board. And on anchoring in mud: Depending on wind, current and swell in time mud will be building up on top of the anchor. As happened in your case. Best case scenario is that it will be hard to get the anchor up. Worst case it may cause you to drag. And finally......enjoy Porto. My best friend's girlfriend was born there. They both live in Holland now but they go back to Porto at least once a year. Lovely city. Hope you like it!

    • @SailingIndiana
      @SailingIndiana Před dnem

      Hey thanks so much for the comments, some super helpful advice in here. We have always made sure to shorten the life lines as much as we can when attaching to our port and starboard tethers, but maybe a central line is a better bet. Definitely a risk of getting dragged along face down if it’s too long. Porto was incredible, we really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it to anyone heading down the Portuguese coast🙌🏼

    Think you have sensible approach. By default we wear them but like you guys, if we're both in cockpit while calm or motoring, we often take them off. Risk is higher with just two crew; having one person left to handle the boat and rescue/recovery means a MOB is likely to be in water much much longer. We also have PLB/EPRIBS on our lifejackets plus a VHF/DSC walkie-talkie when alone on watch ... have a recurring nightmare of coming up for watch to find I'm the only person aboard; the other crew being 0-4 hours somewhere behind the boat!!

    • @SailingIndiana
      @SailingIndiana Před dnem

      Yeah you’re 100% right about the increased risks with only minimal crew onboard. We have PLBs in the pockets of our foul weather jackets, as it’s more likely to be poor visibility and harder to spot a MOB if it’s foulie weather. Handheld VHF with dsc is at the helm. Lots to think about 😅

    In the United States we basiclly follow the law regarding lifejackets when we traveling on our sailboat. Because our primary jackets are compact self inflating, the law requires that they are worn when you are on the move. We are good with this because the jackets are so comfortable you forget you have them on. We dont use them in the dinghy as we have some orange old school tied in, you cant give these away so we don't worry about theft. We dont wear them any at anchor, on a mooring, or at the docks.

    A tip, always disconnect your raw water pump belt, or disconnect the hose out from it and run it to a bucket/bilge if your engine has an aqua lift muffler and you plan to crank it excessively without starting. You don't want to rely on the pressure from a non-running engine to clear the muffler. I doubt the water was the cause of your bent connecting rod, but hydro locking an engine can definitely do that and worse. Unfortunate the engine needed to come out, I hope it works out for you guys, I'm off to watch that now.

    Those two forts at the entrance to The Fowey River were anchor point for a massive chain that was stretched across the harbour entrance to stop 'unwanted guests' from paying a visit. The little beach to your Port as you enter is called Ready Money Cove, it gets its name from the fact that when the wreckers (locals that deliberately guided ships onto the rocks so that they would wreck and their cargos could be 'liberated') crashed ships onto the rocks, all the cargo would end up being washed ashore into Ready Money Cove, hence 'Ready Money'. If you go ashore across from the town of Fowey, you can walk to the top of the cliffs at Polruan and if you're brave enough (or perhaps young enough and stupid enough) you can sit on a ledge beneath the Coast Guard lookout station a few 100 feet above the water on a sunny afternoon and read a book - only if you're stupid enough to though. And to those that suggest sailing to the Med for the sun, guess what, every Capt Tom, 1st Mate Dick and Deckhand Harry has the same idea. Sailing or any form of boating in the Med is like a floating package holiday in Torremolinos in August. Thousands of boats all moored stern to inches apart herded together like cattle. Little better than an charter flight with 2 inches of legroom, followed by a three hour bus ride delivering everyone to their hotels. Most of whom will spend the entire holiday in an English pub every night, followed by days flopped on a sunbed elbow to elbow with someone from Leeds. I still don't understand why you would fly to a different country and spend your entire time looking for everything English. The return trip will be so stressful you will need another two weeks holiday to recover from it, , departing your hotel at 2.30 am to catch the cattle flight home crammed onto a plane with drunks, sombreros and wooden donkeys. No thanks, Uk in good weather is fantastic, we have some amazing coastlines, harbours and inlets, far fewer crowds and if you really want the sun, try cruising the French canals. Just my opinion.

      The chain would have been stretched between Polruan castle and the castle near Whitehouse on the Fowey side. St Catherine’s Castle and the ope opposite were built high up protecting the harbour mouth.

      Thanks very much! So the aim is to get to Gibraltar and stay there until our days reset. Looking at digital nomad visa options for Spain/Greece, or shengen extensions in places like France… It’s a bit of a nightmare really

    Fab video, nice to see you relaxing into the cruising life a bit more. If you have two smartphones I think you can leave one running an anchor watch app on the boat and take the other phone ashore. If the anchor watch is triggered then you get an alert. Pretty sure I have seen this done.

    • @SailingIndiana
      @SailingIndiana Před měsícem

      Baiona was definitely the first place we really started to relax and enjoy the time in anchor and seeing the town! Ah yes, we’ve heard that mentioned recently. You can pay a small fee/subscription and set up the app on two phones! We really need to do this, we always worry when ashore😅

      The chili oil dish was soooo good!! Really glad it turned out well😅 The instant bbq’s are really good if there’s only a few of you, they come with a fire starter sheet that you just light, then the coals cook fine🤌🏼 It’s just making sure to dispose of it properly afterwards. I guess coals can just go overboard maybe?🤔

    Like you I have in mast furling. They are not the most efficient sail, being just about the flattest flat thing! I think you always seem to have your clew outhaul too tight, flattening the sail. Once you have it out just back off a little to create a bit of shape and a little curve along the foot and a bit of belly in the sail, especially in lighter winds. Flatten it more in a blow to take the power out. Think of a plane wing. The leach cleat also slips on mine so I take the line (extend it if needed), through the clew outhaul eye, get some tension, and tie it off. Once you get the best setting where the leach stops rattling you should not have to adjust it again. Enjoy your blue water sailing...and yes, do use your anchor ball ☺.

  • @seandepagnier
    @seandepagnier Před 2 měsíci

    i think you would do better with a full batten main without inmast furling

    • @SailingIndiana
      @SailingIndiana Před 2 měsíci

      That would be good. But also just getting a new sail is probably what would sort it. It’s the original sail and it’s super baggy/stretched we think😬
