  • I didn't know what self-employed harpists did all day until I became one, just about 10 years ago. I thought it would be fun to put together a vlog on the topic.

    This is my favorite day-in-the-life video I have ever seen. The video is so well put-together. I love how down-to-earth you are, and it's great that you also say "supper" like we do here in the distant land of Iowa :D

    Great video! I really liked your 80/20 approach, that’s definitely a good way to reframe expectations for days on/off 😄

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen  Před 2 lety

      Thanks! 80/20 has definitely helped me (for the most part) maintain my equilibrium when it comes to weekdays vs weekends as a musician. I can't take credit for it, but unfortunately I don't remember where I first heard that concept.

    A wonderful idea to share moments of your life :)
    As a hobby harpist, I always kinda wondered, how a professional harpists routine may look like, so thank you for sharing this moments with the world :)

      @StephanieClaussen  Před 2 lety +1

      So glad you liked it! I do try to keep busy. But I like that most of the things I do are time-flexible. Except practicing for gigs - I've learned the hard way that that has to be spaced out over time rather than concentrated all at the last moment.

    An interesting 'backstage' glimpse!😲 I truly admire your sense of discipline, Stephanie.🤗Besides that, there are other things, which caught my eye: Love that vase with the beautiful roses, all your mugs (they lend such a feeling of cozyness...☺), laughed about you saying you feel 'like Galadriel when you're pouring your coffee' and That strudel... oh, my !... (to die for, it looks so yummy.) P.S.: I'm curious about the film you are playing for!

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen  Před 2 lety +2

      I suppose some of it is discipline, but one of the benefits of being self-employed is that most things don't need to be completed on a certain day. Since I have a lot of choices as to what to do on any give day, I just choose the one that sounds the most fun at the moment. 😁 I think the aspect of my life that takes the most discipline is answering my emails! Those can be a struggle sometimes. So glad you enjoyed the flowers - they were a gift from some dear friends and they lasted for weeks and weeks. And that film was such a fun project! It was Charlie Chaplin's "The Kid." Philip Shorey is a local composer who got permission to write a new score. We performed it a few weeks ago at an old silent-film theater in Minneapolis!

    Oh wow! I can’t even imagine getting that pedal harp up there! Ha! I sort of feel guilty for ever emailing you, with your busy schedule. I know you don’t want us to feel that way. I do appreciate how quickly you get back to me. And I never expect you to respond on weekends. I’m sure the temptation is there to keep up on email so it doesn’t pile up. Hopefully you just glance looking for the gigs and not all your student emails! 😀 you have a beautiful home, and wow, so many harps. I counted 6 but maybe you have more.

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen  Před 2 lety

      Don't ever feel guilty! I'm happy to be a resource for my students; it's part of being a harp teacher. For emails, it was a great relief when I discovered the starring systems, so that I can look through things and just star everything that needs a response. It helps things not get lost. And you are almost right - I have 7 harps (so many)!

    Thanks! Agreed performing is easier than recording, have been lax on this best method of practice, an audience can just enjoy but it is harder when you know every note of the music. Nice job, fun to watch. The Water is wide a favorite of mine to sing & play. I do it in G also and am adding that Am at measure 28, a nice touch. I have been going straight to D. Keep smiling. Did wonder, especially with moving the harp that somewhere in there is tuning time. :-)

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, with recordings I get SO stuck in the details, especially because I know all the mistakes will jump out at me every time I listen back to that particular video, or track. Glad you liked the Am in Water is Wide - I like to sneak lots of minor chords in anywhere they will fit!

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen  Před 2 lety +3

      I actually didn't want to be a professional because I liked playing harp and never wanted to feel like it was "work." But when I was considering and praying about what I wanted to study in college, it became pretty clear that I enjoyed harp more than anything else and I felt like God wanted me to do that. It really has worked out well. 😁 (Also my parents were self-employed, so I had some precedent for choosing this type of career.)

      I take two weeks of vacation a year for sure, scheduled when work is slow, plus various holidays and additional time if I need it. (Being one's own boss has its perks!) As I mentioned in a video, Thursdays are my day off when I have a gig on Saturday or Sunday (or both) so I usually have one day off every week.
