    Great comparison! I've been using mine for a week. I really like it! I had the same conclusion. If you're using the camera for video more than for stills, I don't think it's even close. ZV-E10 by a mile. If your use is mainly stills and a little bit of video, that's when A6400 is better because being able to quickly change modes and shoot through the viewfinder is great. If it's close to 50-50... I think I'd still go with the ZV-E10 because it's so much cheaper, and then if you want to be more serious about stills, you can start saving toward a used A7 II, which will blow either camera away for stills. You covered most things, but I would also add that this camera can be used as a webcam without having to install any special drivers or software, and it has worked in every program I've tried so far. Output is only 720P, so for best resolution, you would use HDMI to CamLink 4K, but I think the 720P output from this camera looks subjectively better than 4K from any consumer webcam, and it'd be more than enough for most streamers. Showing up to work meetings on the ZV-E10 + Sigma 16mm f/1.4 (using the Clear Image Zoom to frame your image) feels really deluxe, but since I actually didn't have a webcam connected to my main desktop, this has meant that I can stop whipping out my laptop, iPad, or a CamLink to join work calls at my desk. Your earlier videos really helped me realize that it would be a camera I enjoy using, and so far, I have found plenty of negatives, but I've been able to work around all of them, and the thing is, A6400 has a lot of the same negatives, too, and at least the ZV-E10 is much cheaper, lighter, and portable, while being capable of marginally better output. I have zero regrets about my purchase.

      @crowking76 Před 3 lety +1

      Agree with your conclusion but also have additional comments. ZV-E10 is simplified for easy video making and it's main goal, but would be excellent for stills too if it had few more custom buttons/switches like ie. a6400. Sony has absolutely great and powerful customisation of camera operation for personal needs but it requires more custom buttons for advanced shooting setup. A6400 would be still great competitor to ZV-E10 on video if it had gyro sensor for post stabilization. IMO one more pain for ZV-E10 is that tilt screen makes handheld operation inconvenient when you want to support lens with your left hand + line of view offset and not fully open angle (few degree lack to allign to body when opened) makes operation sometimes a bit weird too.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  Před 3 lety +4

      This is some excellent and insightful stuff, thanks both and fully agree.
      The thing that drives me crazy with Sony is how close they get to something being ideal and then end up one or two compromises or weird decisions away.
      The stabilisation difference is the killer for my use. I love catalyst and active steadyshot at its very worst makes handheld video with the many great non stabilised lenses viable. Plus the lighter weight is more gimbal friendly so even taking a conservative view that’s a big advantage for me.
      The lack of buttons is probably the idea a vlogger audience wants things simple - which may be true - but I wish there were a few more for more experienced users or new people to grow into 😂
      The zoom rocker and on off switch are straight out of the fx3 playbook and I wish we’d had 10% more fx3 and 10% less zv1/a6400 in the gene pool 😂

  • @evergrandebestrealestate4854

    The gyroscopic data registry is fantastic on the ZV e10. Sony fixed everything wrong with the Alpha 6400 on the ZV e10. I hope they release the new Alpha 6400 soon. That will have metal build and all the new features

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider Před 3 lety +1

      It's crazy how Catalyst seems to take not just the shakes but the warpy wobbles away. Does the Final Cut Pro stabilization do that? Do you recall where you saw that video? Thanks!

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Kumoito, I’d be interested in seeing the video and type of shot too. In my experience FC can do a great job on simple pans and tilts it not walking clogs or more complex movements. I’ve seen tons of weird corner wobble and nothing like as good as catalyst-which isn’t surprising given FC is trying to interpret frame data whereas catalyst has actual spatial data.
      It’s a while ago but I think there’s a brief FC comparison in either my old catalyst video:
      czcams.com/video/O698QZRGI4E/video.html or my old zv1 stabilisation vid: czcams.com/video/Ty2FoHbDff8/video.html
      Internet in my current spot is bandwidth capped so I can’t pop in and check but I’m sure it’s in one of them haha 😂

    I went to my local Best Buy and played around with both cameras. I own a a5100 and looking to upgrade.
    -The 6400 feels solid in the hands, the viewfinder feels premium, and having more physical controls is much appreciated. Having to go into the menu system to change modes has always been annoying.
    -The ZVE10 felt a little bit too plastic for my taste, especially for a modern camera. The buttons feel cheaper when pushed in my opinion. I really did like the one button to blur the background...neat if you're pressed for time or just wanna experiment. USB C is great too.
    Ended up deciding on the a6400, mainly for the viewfinder and the premium, weather sealed, build quality. Found a certified refurbished unit at a very good price.

    The ZV-E10 is definitely cool and builds nicely on the ZV-1 platform [adding lens flexibility]. A no-brainer choice if you ONLY shoot video. However, I'm a hybrid shooter and will keep my 6400 for 3 reasons... 1) EVF essential to taking pics or outdoor video 2) flip-up screen better than flip-out for vlogging 3) 'bendy' pop-up flash great for bouncing light off wall or ceiling.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  Před 3 lety +3

      Some good insights there mem, thanks for sharing and mostly agree. For me I prefer flip out to flip up for vlogging as I often can’t see the settings at the bottom of the screen with flip up which drives me crazy haha 😂
      The flash I’ve barely used so it’s cool to here the creative things you can do with it:) One day I’d love to spend more time on photography but between the day job and other commitments the biggest enemy is time 😂

    another feature difference that might important to some is that a6400 has awb-lock, whereas zv e10 for some reason doesnt.. i mean, a6400, a6600, zv1, a7siii, a7c, a1, fx3, a7iv i think all have it, but zv e10 (released i think between fx3 and a7iv, somehow didnt get it. those are semi-professional or professional cameras (except zv1), and one would think professionals dont lock awb but set it manually, however zv e10 although supposedly more of a vlogging camera and thus maybe more needing a lock, doesnt have it.. annoying, as it is useful and sony probably wont implement it through firmware later on.

    Great, great video! Loved the humor as you give a thorough evaluation. I don't have much budget left ($700-900)and I am starting to work on my first documentary film and was thinking about a second camera for multiple angles during interviews. I already have a Canon m50 (which I got something else to start...Oh well.,...) Now I am trying to decide what would be a decent option that may be best for recording B-Roll, facial close up etc. I already have a drone and a gimbal and a lav system, and Zoom recorder. Was close to getting the a6400 on Ebay until I saw this video...now I am not so sure. Thoughts?

      @dbvares8745  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Pastor, great Q. It always comes down to what your priorities are. If you're mainly recording static shots stabilisation won't be an issue so the ZV-E10 loses an advantage, however it's still cheaper (depending on second hand a640 pricing). If you need a viewfinder the a6400 is the way to go. Lens options are identical; AF is great on both but a shade more controllable and updated on the zv-e10 so that could be a reason to prefer it.
      I'd personally go zv-e10 for a video first use case but both have merits.
      Let me know what you decide!

  • @LS-oh8kv
    @LS-oh8kv Před 3 lety +3

    “So the build quality must be different right? No”
    The ZV E10 is plastic, the 6400 is magnesium. That’s a massive difference in long term ruggedness.
    “The ZV E10 has a button for S&q which makes it easy to get to, which the 6400 doesn’t have” okay? S&Q is on the modes dial, it takes 1 second to spin the dial to that mode
    You not using the viewfinder is a fair assessment for your use case but it is useful for bright photography, or outdoor filming on a tripod in bright light and checking exposure and focus before you get started. Not really a major gripe but it is an extra cost of production
    The only reason I watched this video was to find out if the ZV E10 has picture profiles like the 6400 does. Picture profiles, magnesium housing, and water resistant rating are the only 3 reasons to get the 6400 over the 6100, and so far the ZV E10 only has 0 of those things, making it a 6100 replacement in my book, not a 6400 replacement.
    Don’t compare the 6400 to the ZV E10 if you’re not even going to mention a single one of the features that makes it unique from the 6100, a camera that is the same price as the ZV E10 and say it’s a better camera for less money. I get that 6400 is worse for some things and better for others but 6100 is a better comparison, or at least mention the things that made the 6400 unique

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey LS, some good points well made there. Agree on the magnesium point; I should have been clearer I was referring to the feel of the build quality - trouble with rushing to get these big videos done sometimes is forgetting to mention some bits.
      As for picture profiles the zv-e10 does have them: the video was shot in pp10 HLG on both cameras as mentioned at the beginning.
      You’ve picked up on a couple of valid differences that aren’t core to my use case but are very much worth highlighting. I thought I did cover the viewfinder point and agree with your assessment. I’d also say the video shooting features, noting this is a review for videography on a videography channel, do make the zv-e10 a stronger choice than the a6400 for thst use case. As you rightly say, that won’t be the same for other use cases where the importance is weighted very differently across features.
      Thanks for picking up these bits and for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day 👍

      @LS-oh8kv Před 3 lety

      @@dbvares8745 thank you for the response. So it looks like a direct upgrade for a 6100 user, but a side grade for a 6400 user, or another option depending on feature wants.
      I also think the side flip is a personal preference, I prefer the flip up since it keeps my eyes closer to the lens instead of looking off to the side for vlogging. I do wish the hot shoe for the 6400 was permanent off to the side, that’s definitely one of my complaints about the camera however.
      You did cover the viewfinder point yes, I was agreeing with you there on it being situational for you but a definite reason to cost more.
      I see this camera as the choice for someone who wanted a 6100, didn’t care about the viewfinder, but wanted picture profiles. Because those are SO big of an upgrade from the 6100 that having those alone makes the ZV E10 the better camera, even with having less control buttons and dials.

    Hi I need some help in choosing my first camera! I'm a (broke) university student majoring in digital media studies. I've been interested in making videos and (hopefully) short films. The only camera I've ever used was my sister's Canon M10 (but only to take photos). Now that I want to focus on filmmaking (for assignments and in the future), I'm looking to invest in a camera that suits my needs. I hope to find one that I can use to capture cinematic shots but also still within my budget (around $1000 is the max). I've been contemplating on whether I should get the a6400, ZV E10, or maybe a different model.
    I'm not sure if the a6400 is too expensive for what it offers or if the ZV E10 is too bear (I should invest a bit more for more features/capabilities)
    I even thought about checking out Lumix G85 because of the stabilization and overall more affordable, but I couldn't find the resolution I was hoping for.
    I'm looking for suggestions please, thank you!!

      I wonder if I should get something like this or maybe wait a little and save more on another kind that's worth more (quality and price wise). Other types that I've seen people talk about are Fuji XT3 or XT4, Canon SL3, and Nikon Z50. Though I am leaning more towards making videos, I'm also into photography. What's your opinion in general?

      Hey B Prast, yep I’ve recorded over an hour with no overheating. You can see battery duration tests here czcams.com/video/LCCCYPIvMCg/video.html and here

      Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great weekend 👍

      Recording with 4k will cause it to overheat. Not so much in 1080p

    This is a really awesome, detailed review. I've been using a6400 for a long time, and I love it, but it seems like the ZVE 10 is better. And cheaper! I guess the only difference between that camera and the a6600 is the battery? ZVE 10 has all of the picture profiles as well? For me, the big advantage of the a6400 is the viewfinder, because the screen kind of sucks, and to really nail exposure I personally need to use the viewfinder to check what's going on in the camera with relation to the real world. I think if I had the zve 10, I would definitely need to add an external monitor, unless the monitor is much better than the a6400. Or perhaps add a viewfinder. In any case, I won't be switching. (You can't get one anyway now) I can do all my work with what I have, along with my Weebill S, and I'm used to it, but if I were buying now, I'd probably grab the ZVE 10.

      Hey Rock, great to see you and appreciate the kind words as ever. I'd say the a640 has better materials (albeit that's part of it being a bit heavier) and the EVF. All picture profiles are the same. The a6600 has the larger batter and in body stabilisation - personally I'd say it's better than nothing but not necessarily good enough for video in many cases and certainly not for vlogging.
      Solid analysis and good conclusion too - it's fun to see how tech and products develop but not necessary to chase every new version or upgrade if your have a solution that works well now:)

      @@dbvares8745 Yeah. I’m good with what I have. Especially ever since I started shooting in a s-log 2, it made me feel like I got a brand new camera, it was so good. Sometimes it’s good to just sit with what you have, and just make art. That’s really the bottom line, right? :-)
