  • Today we test the low light capabilities of the Sony ZV-E10 and compare it with the Sony A6400. While these cameras seem to have the same sensor they can produce very different and surprising results across a bunch of tests, cinematic B roll and vlogging shots. Both are basically the same photo camera and will have very similar performance in good light - daylight comparison here: czcams.com/video/gWNkvIGQfBU/video.html
      If you’re likely to be shooting outdoors in bright sun or using a flash sometimes the A6400 may be better as it has a viewfinder and flash which the zve10 does not.
      The zve10 has a lot of advantages if you shoot more video.

    That 👻 trail is due to noise reduction algorithm having hard time to sync with the image. I have same issues on my smartphone, but there i can dial back noise reduction from high quality to fast. And on Sony you should be able to reduce that noise algorithm sync lag as well by putting it on low or off. You cant however disable it completely, since there is NR algorithm in recording codec as well. I would try to use capture card or external recorder for much better results, but don't expect miracles there. And for that color shift issue i would try to white balance camera at that iso you gonna shoot on. It works on my a6300/a5100.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey AV, some great tips there. Agree on white balance, the one exception is is if you or your environment is changing and you want to use auto iso, but I’d expect that to be comparatively rare!
      I’ve not found any options around noise reduction in video and I know a lot of that is baked in and can’t be changed on much of Sonys consumer line but will investigate further.
      Really good stuff-thank you:) Consider subbing if you enjoyed and have an awesome day 👍👏

    You gained a new sub. Nice clear vid!
    Here in dxb prices are all over the shop. I’m currently trying to decide between the zv-e10, and the canon m50 mkii. Sony’s is selling for £600 with kit lens, and the m50 mkii for £700 (a bundle with canons 18-50 and 55-200mm lenses included. About 550 just for the basic canon kit lens)
    What would you go for? I’m mostly focussed on indoor product photography, and also considering picking up some of the sigma f1.4 series lenses (I guess emount or efm when I finally decide). Bit of live-streaming at the same time. I’m definitely not doing video right now but of course it’s good to hear in mind for the future
    From what I can see this is basically a a6400 with no viewfinder. I want to get the most out of the kit lens before buying the sigma primes right now
    Hope you can see this. Glad I found the channel

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  Před 2 lety

      Hey BB, welcome on board and great to hear from you 💪
      So with the caveat that I do minimal photography compared to videos I’d say the zv1 has an advantage because the e Mount ecosystem is quite a bit bigger than Ef-m, at least right now.
      I’d personally find that versatility and a bit more portability the more compelling option, but the m50 for photos is a pretty strong option from what I know. The viewfinder is an advantage but probably not a major one if you’re mainly doing indoor product work. If you do expand into video the zv-e10 would definitely be my recommendation.
      Lastly, I just reviewed the Sony kit lens, so you can see a bit more of what it can do here: czcams.com/video/B54lUgUee2Y/video.html
      Hope that helps and you have an awesome day 👏👍

    I find in low light my ZVE10 has some slow down? I’m brand new to cameras so it’s probably my fault entirely.. every setting is automatic so perhaps I need to manually adjust something like the iso?
    Using the bundled lens and steady shot tuned off.
    Any help / suggestions?

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey WWTW, there’s a few things to watch out for. Firstly the kit lens does not have a very wide aperture so won’t be great in low light, meaning it will force ISO higher and shutter slower. There’s a setting (I think somewhere on the video menu but I can’t recall off hand) called auto slow shutter- thst will let the shutter go as slow as 1/25 in video which will give quite a blurry and slowed down effect which might be the trouble.
      More broadly if you’re just getting started this explains how the different Sony video modes work so you aren’t stuck on auto:
      czcams.com/video/U5mn2LQeL20/video.html
      And this one explains some of the main settings you’d want to have in mind for zve10 settings: czcams.com/video/Th5b4jsLVjw/video.html

    It's weird that A6400's performance is mediocre compared to ZV-E10 in low light, considering that the A6400 has the Back-Illuminated sensor. Did sony improve things on ZV-E10 from the software side?
    Also, I have a concern: does the colour depth difference for photography still make the A6400 superior to the ZV-E10 in terms of photography?

With some setting and grading experiments I think you could match to most things pretty well, but I’m not sure how tricky thst is with the colour blindness. What is the main cam you’re looking to match with - the a6400?

    It was great my friend, thnx. But a question, how difficult is taking photo with zv-e10 without a viewfinder? Is it tolerable in outdoor daylight? And some lenses don't have focus motor, inside them, can i have auto focus on zv-e10?

      @dbvares8745  Před 2 lety

      Hey Mohsen, appreciate you taking the time to share such nice feedback- thank you 🙏
      As for photos: with max screen brightness I’ve generally had no problems but if you’re in really bright direct sun and can’t alter the screen angle for some reason (seems a fairly rare situation to me) then it could make things hard to see.
      As for lenses: if they don’t have a focus motor the ZV-E10 has nothing to work with to provide autofocus- a lens must have autofocus for the camera to use its autofocus system. Manual focus lenses will still work great but will always need that manual setup:)

    Can you do this with a6600 vs zve-10. I just bought my a6600 4days before zve-10 was released that's why i got my a6600 brandnew with a good discount. Though its still far from zve-10 pricing given the price discount. So i want to know if it is worth getting the a6600 than waited a little bit for the zve-10?

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  Před 2 lety

      Hey Caven, I may be able to do a spec comparison but I don’t own an a6600 to do a proper side by side. That said the sensor and image quality will be identical to the a6400 so the visuals here should give a good idea.
      The a6600 has superior battery life and ergonomics but inferior stabilisation, video features and older colour science. So your use case will determine which suits you best. Hope that helps a bit. As mainly a video shooter I’d personally take the zve10.

      @@dbvares8745 thanks for the reply. Im using the camera mostly for vlogging and yes i saw that zv e10 has better stabilization due to its gyro data. Which i hope sony will include on a6600 firmware update since rx0ii has it and a6600 came after rx0ii if im not mistaken. And the price of a6600 needs this kind of technology since the ibis is crap compared to ibis of gh5. Don't get me wrong i do like the a6600 i just wanted to get the tech on a premium price i paid for it. 🤣😂 And i like the flip up compare to flip out. So hopefully sony give it to us a6600 users. Just like the color science from fx3 was also given to a7siii. And one more point i noticed a bit better stabilization with ibis and lens with oss than ibis only. I have the kit lens 18-135mm and when i used it vlogging, it has less shaky footage just don't run and jump. 🤣😂 Ill subscribe to your channel because you notice my comment and even replied to it. Hey Daniel, thanks for the good question-also a musician when I have the time 😂
      Either of these camera are good in fairly low light with a wide aperture lens (I’d recommend the sigma f1.4 lenses at 16mm, 30mm and56mm.
      You’ll likely have a decent jump in cost before getting a big improvement in low light - either upgrading to a full frame camera like the a7c or a73, or some of the high end aps-c option by Fuji (I hear good things but haven’t owned one myself). Overall I think there’s a good chance the zv-e10 with the lenses mentioned earlier will do a good job, especially for the price. I’d say in normal gif conditions it should do ok:)

    I believe that these 2 cameras are IDENTICAL since they have the same hardware. The difference in color you saw i m suspecting is coming from different internal setups (software) like magenta shifting etc and not because there is any new color technology since we all know that there is no new menus, no new codecs, no new sensor etc. In fact there is no any evolution in Sony's APS-C series so I really doubt that there is any new color science behind these differences. New color science is only available - till now - only in Sony's FF cameras.

      @dbvares8745  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey V&A, thanks for the thoughtful and insightful comment. You may well be right - the hardware- at least the sensor - is clearly identical. Now where I’m not a tech expert is colour science, so I’d welcome your views. I thought colour science was effective how software interprets what the sensor capture as digital light info and maps that to pixels and hues to make an image, plus when the zv-e10 was announced Sony had updated colours (like with the zv1 compared to rx models) as one of their selling points.
      So I think we are describing the same thing in it being about software interpreting things differently-but what are your thoughts? Interested to learn:)

      Low light is definitely going to strain any camera so might not be the most useful reference point for overall capability.

      Similarly, while I’ve now sold my a6400 I found the footage with the zv-e10 is basically identical for quality. I wouldn’t have any concern about how the underlying image results and sensor compares between zv-e10 and the A6X series. See what you think: czcams.com/video/gWNkvIGQfBU/video.html

      It's not like all the buttons on the A6400 are any useful when you're in front of the camera, and that's what the ZV-E10 is meant to be used for. That said, that's where Sony lags far behind just about every other company that allows for a lot of touchscreen control, especially Canon. It's so stupid that you have to do so much with the directional pad on a Sony, which, by the way, when you're in front of the camera, is really unintuitive.

    … better than IPhone Pro Max ?

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  Před 2 lety

      Hey Globe, so you’d want the largest possible sensor for the best results and something which can do high iso very well since 4k60 will require at 1/60, ideally 1/125 shutter speed.
      Which unfortunately leaves us with very limited answer for things with those capabilities: Sony A7S3, FX3, Canon Eos R5 or R6. I’m not aware of many other full frame 4k60 options - Panasonic might have one but I’m not so familiar with their stuff.
      Bottom line you’re likely looking at something at least 4-8 times the cost of a zv-e10, which is steep unless you know you really have to have those capabilities.
      Hope that helps!

At 4k24 or 4k30 the Sony A73 and A7C have pretty great noise performance up to iso12800 and sometimes beyond. The 60fps in 4k is what will drive a price premium in the current market of options

    I do at least 50% still shooting. Using a viewfinder properly provides an inherently more stable hold than holding the camera at arms length to look at the LCD screen. This allows one to use a slower shutter speed without getting camera motion blur. A slower shutter speed produces an image with less noisiness
    It wasn't until I learned how to properly hold a camera that I truly appreciated having a viewfinder. Using a large LCD screen seems fine, until you realize you'll never really hold a camera stable with your arms outstretched so you can see the screen. Now that I'm used to using a viewfinder and holding the camera properly, it's really difficult to go back to anything without a viewfinder.
    I have been viewing all the videos comparing these two cameras since I am trying to decide on a new one. Since I do take many photos, I am very much leaning toward the a6400. After watching several different videos with nearly every video having different results it has been confusing. I have not made up my mind, but the in camera tiltable flash, viewfinder, and enviromental sealings make me lean toward the a6400.

      Boyd, thanks for sharing this really thoughtful analysis. Totally agree about the benefit of a viewfinder for stills. I personally find it a bit awkward for video but that's subjective preference; with stills and trying to capture single moments I think the EVF is super helpful. There's also the EVF advantage in bright sun which is notable.
      As with all things each individual use case is the key thing and sounds like your thinking is very sensible for yours. The main advantages of the ZV-E10 are for video so if those won't benefit your use then I think the a6400 is indeed the better option.

      Is it? I believe both a6400 and zv-e10 has the same LCD hardware and spec. Only the ZV-E10 is articulating. What do you think?

      From being hands on I’d say the slightly different shape is the most noticeable difference. I’m aiming for zv-e10 vs a6400 in the next couple of weeks so I’ll see if there are any brightness differences like the ones I saw on the zv1.
      Great chat here - wishing you all a lick ass day!

      @awid I'm British, and this dude is also British. It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine when Brits start incorporating Americanisms into their vernuncular. You see it in the car community quite a bit, for example, Chris Harris saying "2 J Zee" instead of "2 J Zed".

      Arm, you are absolutely right. It’s a concession I made because a) it’s a lot smoother to say when you end up saying it thousands of times 😂 and
      b) the majority of the channel audience is US based according to the current stats so I figured I’d roll with what’s best for the audience - small thing though it is.
      Hope you enjoyed the vid more broadly, consider subbing if so and huge thanks for watching either way 👍😁

    Both dated and dogshit cameras with a dogshit ancient rolling shutter sensor. FFS Sony. TIME to release the APSC version of the S3 - The A64S3!!!

      Hey Jeff, good to hear from you, and I do agree - both cameras can do a great job in the right circumstances but they are falling behind the technology curve. A shame as I thought the zv-e10 could have been a sensor refresh and upgrade but instead they went for a parts bin value proposition. Will be v interesting to see releases in the next 12 months as one thing the zv-e10 might do is encourage more options in the crop lens ecosystem which could benefit new models-we shall see…
      Take care and have a great day 👍
