In light of recent news involving the confiscation of living provisions for Cardinal Burke, by Pope Francis, I thought it worth trying to find some clarification on the question is there no possible scenario in which a Pope can be corrected? St. Peter was publicly corrected for his moral behaviour by St. Paul and there have been popes who have been corrected theologically. Pope John XXII had been corrected for preaching that souls don’t experience the beatific vision until after the final judgement - which was false and he eventually amended that stance based on corrections that he received.
St. Thomas Aquinas gives us distinctions about how and when a subject can correct a superior. For those who believe that Cardinal Burke was guilty of stepping outside the bounds of St. Thomas' teaching, they may find themselves being equally guilty of the thing they accuse the good Cardinal of.

Jesus Christ is quite literally the ONLY human being who has ever walked this earth that could never be credibly "corrected" owing to his being literal, living, breathing, walking, talking TRUTH in the flesh. Even Our Blessed Lady, sinless though she was, may have possibly been "wrong" on some issue or other, beyond her capacity, so could theoretically have been corrected on it. Some of you seem to think the Pope is a reincarnation of Christ rather than his chief servant, who occupies the office, not of Christ, but of Peter! It's beyond embarrassing! PS: The title, (which, by the way, is shared by all Bishops) is "Vicar" of Christ, not Avatar of Christ ...
@@user-jn8nn6bf6v A pope can be corrected for personal failing such as St. Paul did with St. Peter. But a pope cannot be corrected by saying that someone he canonized isn't really a saint or say his teaching on faith and morals in an encyclical or an ecumenical council is incorrect.
It is Church teaching that Christ and His Vicar constitute one head.

If St. Paul can correct St. Peter "to his face", a Cardinal (or anyone else for that manner) should be able to correct an erring Pope.

One important distinction to make is that Pope St. Peter wasn't authentically and authoritatively excerising his office as Shepard of the Universal Church when he was corrected by St. Paul. Instead, I believe he was 'caving in' to Jewish customs in his local diocese.
Nowadays, we see a lot of "St. Pauls" trying to correct "St. Peter" in official, magisterial documents like Amoris Laetitia, which I believe is a big no-no.
If St. Peter, or any Pope, formally attempted to teach error and compel the Universal Church to submit to such teaching, the Holy Spirit would not allow it. Our Lord prayed for St. Peter that his "faith may not fail" . Attempting to formally define error would quality as a "failed faith".

I met Cardinal Burke Briefly in Ireland around 5 years ago, I was on my Bike and decided to see what all the fuss was about outside a local church I was all in my cycling gear and it was a cold evening I was coming home from work , he had just said a confirmation mass it was in the evening time so I decided to make my way in the side entrance, the church was empty he was walking back up the aisle in his priestly Garments and his crozier in hand with two young priests following him in respect, he seemed in deep reverence to the Eucharist in the tabernacle I welcomed him to Ireland and put out my hand he gently squeezed it and said thank you ,he passed on up to the altar genuflected and bowed his head , it was a surreal experience .

St. Catherine of Siena, simple girl from poor family convinced the Pope to return the papacy to Rome from Avignon and encouraged him to ignore the advice of his cardinals.

The guy served the church his whole life.. then gets his ability to live taken away, for clinging to actual doctrine and getting on the bad side of the Pope who has apparently let so many actual crimes slide from other people. The only thing held sacred now is that the Pope is infalible and unquestionable. Very depressing.

Anyone can correct the pope (or anyone else, for that matter). One only needs to speak the truth. Whether or not that truth is received, is another matter--and that is the responsibility of the one who is corrected.
Cardinal Burke will be fine. He has no need to worry about his welfare.

In fact, compared to most of the "bad ones," Pope Francis is, even by the standards of his most uncharitable critics, not even in the same league as someone like, say, Sergius III.
I would caution anyone against labeling Pope Francis a false pope for two reasons:
First, we have neither the competence nor the authority to make that determination. We were not privy to the goings-on of the last conclave. We do not know if the conditions for determining whether a pope is false have been met. In fact, we do not even know what those conditions are.
Second, the temptation to reject his authority surely comes from the evil one. The many "traditionalist" groups that exist today are a testament to the dangers of appointing oneself as an arbiter of papal legitimacy. Many schismatics reject the papacies of John XXIII, and as a natural consequence of that, must also reject the papacies of Paul VI, JP1, JP2, BXVI, and Francis. Do you want to start down that route? An antipope is a pretender who has assumed that office illegitimately. It is NOT a pope who believes ridiculous things, nor is it a pope who lives an immoral lifestyle. It is NOT a pope who disregards the welfare of his flock. Assuming the office of the papacy falsely is completely different from not liking the disciplinary, political, and theological views that a particular pope seems to embrace.

The pope should conduct himself in such manner that he does not require criticism.
When the Pope pulls a “Fauci” and claims that to criticize his words or actions is to criticize “the Church” or “the Science”… then we are in trouble!
Even more trouble when that authority is abused unjustly to punish those who offer correction in brotherly love in order to support, heal and grow genuine love (willing good of the other, not unlimited tolerance of others) in the Church and her teachings towards holiness and salvation. ❤ ✝️ Those who suffer for the Church and Christ’s sake will have their eternal reward!

I would think Paul correcting Peter and, though it isn’t quite the same thing, Nathan admonishing David would show that the Pope can be corrected.

Cardinal Burke is not without portfolio in Rome. He is a member of two dicasteries, and of the Apostolic Signatura, the high court of the Church’s legal system. Pope Francis reappointed him to that in 2017.
I want to give public thanks & praise to God for healing Cardinal Burke when he was was very sick with the FAUCI bug. We all said rosaries for him & God gave us a miracle. PRAISE BE TO GOD. And I love Cardinal Burke. ❤

What about the malice of this Pope toward Fr. Frank Pavone, Bishop Strickland. Cardinal Burke, Cardinal Sirah and Archbishop Vigano.
A cardinal can certainly comment on a Pope and even claim to be "correcting" him (though whether it counts as a correction is entirely another matter - sometimes it is personalities, and not a lack of doctrinal orthodoxy on either's part.) But the Pope is not obligated to welcome those criticisms, nor is he obligated to richly reward his critics with the life of Riley in Vatican City. Both things are true.
If i were the cardinal, i would also correct the pope if he was not doing the right thing- if the pope changed the teachings of Jesus Christ.
But if the pope is NOT changing any of the immutable Dogmas of the Church? What if the Cardinal is only raising unjustified fears? Cardinal Burke has been so focused on the purely-advisory Synod on Synodality, that he has not given the pope any support in combating the German Synodal Way -- which has plans to tear apart the unity of the Church.
Cardinal Burke is such a talented man. I wish he would use those talents to help the pope calm the voices of disunity on the Right and on the Left.
We should remember that the approved apparitions of LaSallette and Fatima and Akita all foretold of apostasy at the highest level of the Church. Blessed Fulton Sheen (he is a blessed, right?) said the laity would save the church. “The remnant” of the faithful *is a thing* so maybe we need to ask ourselves is this that time?

Everyone who personally knows the man Cdl Raymond Burke, say unanimously that he’s the kindest and most respectful man, humble even though he is very intelligent and knowledgeable in matters of the Faith and canon law. And yet we have so many popesplainers jumping in to applaud their hero pope’s actions and policies even when for a fraction of such stuff they would have judged and criticized Benedict XVI or even JPII! It’s indeed ironic but such are the times that Our Blessed Mother has spoken of and warned us even. Akita, Garabandal and probably more. So here we are. Now it’s simply upto each one of us to be right before God personally. All the rest, is not our business. He’s in charge and will bring greater Good from all our evil. He will guard and watch over his faithful shepherds like Burke too. I’m confident and I hope we can persevere no matter what more scandal we will see in our lifetime.🙏🏼
A pope ought to invite correction. In humility, all of us who have roles as leaders in Catholicism (Catholic elementary school principal) we need to always be open to loving correction to ensure we stay true to tradition and truth. Anything that suggests otherwise should be held as highly suspicious.

The Dubbia is a formal procedure which isn't taken lightly. It was submitted by more than one Cardinal. Pope Francis did not respond in a timely manner.

And he and Cardinal Fernandez published the full answers to the 5 questions, which removed all need for the second set of questions, because he had answered them fully.
But there are news outlets that don't seem to feel it is important to publish what the pope say.
Formal hæresy isn't contingent upon trial and judgement by the Church. Formal hæresy could be private and interior. Formal hæresy is more than material hæresy in that in involves subjective guilt in addition to objectively hæretical matter.
Nor is manifest hæresy necessarily contingent upon an ecclesial judgement. If a priest came out one day denying the doctrines of justification, eternal punishment, the Immaculate Conception, the uniqueness and unity of the Church, changed the doctrine on capital punishment, referred to transvestites by their preferred pronouns, promoted homosexual civil unions, disrespected the Traditional Roman rite and its associated theology, claimed that atheists would or could go to heaven, participated in non-Catholic worship, claimed that God wills plurality of religions, and that proselytism is sinful, or espoused theistic communism; the hæresy would be manifest.
This pope is uncorrectable. At least for now. He will soon learn just what severe correction is.

If a Pope forces us to either submit to the Deposit of Faith or submit to the Supreme Pontiff in opposition to the Deposit of Faith, then my choice is clear. Not anyones faults (except the Papacy) that the lay faithful are being forced to make that decision.

I’m not going into the question if a Cardinal can correct the pope, I don’t necessarily have an enough informed opinion on this, since e.g. Pope Saint Paul II seems to say no, but I’ll leave that up to you and Lofton to discuss. Something I‘d like to comment on is your comparison with laypeople criticizing a Cardinal. Any cardinal is not the superior of all lay people. You should get a bit into the section of the CIC about cardinals, unless they are specifically authorized by the pope according to to Can 358, they have no superiority over any layperson. That might be different if they are Bishops of a Diocese, but I’m pretty sure Burke isn’t my Bishop. I’m not an expert in Canon Law, I had it for a semester at university, but this part of your video was not very well thought out or researched.
I’m just a Catholic (always was and always will be) and I think the whole rad-trad vs popesplainer discussion is stupid, because it’s not well meaning anymore (I’m more pints with aquinas than taylor marshal or michael lofton), but I think you should be careful to not venture too deep into these internal wars. I love your content, your philosophical stuff is very well thought out, it would be a shame if we’d talk more about church politics than Jesus Christ or the beauty of Christian philosophy.
John XXII was speaking as a private theologian in that istance, so the case isn't analogous because pope francis magisterium - not only his private persona - is constantly criticized (including by cardinal Burke). And pope Honorious wasn't really an heretic, since latin christians always denied that but even if he was, he can be judged only by a successor pontiff as the 8th ecumenical council clearlly states. Therefore none can judge pope francis if not the pope himself or his future successor.
That's not a settled matter. There is disagreement amongst theologians on the issue.
This is a delicate area. Respectfully supporting Pope Francis's decision & explaining why from the known facts I wouldn't call "attacking" Cardinal Burke, or respectfully questioning the decision of Pope Francis I wouldn't call an attack on him. A public story is going to garner public opinion. People have become much too sensitive. Our nations have become hyper-feminized whereas in the past we were more inclined toward the opposite excess. People throw the word "attack" around too loosely nowadays. It'd help if you named those you were speaking about & then we could discern where they landed. I definitely agree there is a temptation from both sides of any issue to fall into excess. Therefore, it wouldn't be hard to find examples of personal attacks from either side. It's a shame. The example of Pope John XXII does not work because his belief on the Beatific Vision was just that of a private individual. When he spoke of his erring belief in public it was only to local congregations via sermons as the Bishop of Rome, not in his magisterial capacity as the Universal Pontiff. If a bishop is urging the use of church collections for something that a person thinks is wrong and he tries, in charity to point this out, by withholding funds from that collection they are not using a form of justice against the bishop but rather exercising prudential judgment.

1) St. Thomas Aquinas specifically said that a person who is of lower rank is not permitted to publicly correct a prelate in a way that would cause scandal among the faithful. He is allowed to correct in private.
2) This still does not address criticizing the pope.

But God chose to deliver me into his missionary ways at age 38, after my daughter was born. The Apostle Paul had a sharp conflict with Barnabas over Mark. And it was over Marks actions. Paul sharply brought to task Peter over his actions over gentiles. The problem with some decisions of the church is there is some that are in opposite teachings of what Jesus himself taught. And now we see that again through his support of the German synod. I think, in my opinion, the vatican has lost touch with the teachings of Jesus.
As a non-Catholic, conservative Christian, I'm finding the current scandals surrounding Pope Francis interesting. Not to mention what the (hopefully) wonderful Javier Milei has said about him.

It is a lot of baggage it took me two years to work through my thoughts and feelings on the Catholic Church before I was ready to convert. Be faithful to God and he will lead your path. If you decide to convert we will celebrate when ever that is.

I think people are conflating "infallibility" with "impeccabilty". Only God is impeccable (incapable of error).
As most Catholics know, infallibility is extremely limited in Papal teachings. If a Pope's teachings run even *slightly* counter to the de Fide (Perennial Magisterial Teachings) beliefs, it cannot be considered de Fide, and certainly not infallible, therefore not worthy of belief. He must then reconsider the problematic wording and make the correction needed in order for his document, or Teaching, to be considered "infallible".
In NO OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES is he considered infallible! He is, after all, just a human! The Holy Spirit only protects THE CHURCH from a Pope trying to *FORMALLY* teach error by changing dogma or doctrine. Sometimes, that protection comes in the form of swift death at God's hands. The Holy Spirit does NOT "guide" the Pope! That is not a de Fide teaching...ever!
They actually claim that it is a case of heresy that the cardinal was accusing him of. I don’t take it that way. I think he was saying that that’s what it sounds like or that’s how we can be portrayed and even if he did, I’m sure it was in Charity one CZcamsr that comes to mind actually seems to be very happy when Cardinals or priests are removed. That being said, I don’t know if it’s just lack of confidence or maybe too much confidence just from studying on the surface or some other issues that might be happening.. even if his judgments were correct on the bishops or priests, we are supposed to be praying for them if they’re removed and are of error and wishing them to come back, we need all the priests bishops and cardinals that we have plus some. I actually love cardinal Burke and I disagree with a particular CZcamsrs way of handling this. but I am also getting sick of the people that are right in their interpretations, but gloat we are supposed to approach everything with a sense of humility, and when I first came to the church and saw all of this me coming back after a very long time I would say almost 20 years it does break my heart. I thank you for your work crying because you always seem to put a smile. on my face because I know that you really love what you do and I believe you have a great love for the church and her members as well. The pope is not the head of the church. Christ is the head of the church. Christ may have appointed leaders within the church, he even may have appointed Peter to lead the church, just as he appointed kings in the Old Testament. But those leaders are not infallible. I don’t think Catholic doctrine even asserts that popes are infallible, except in very limited circumstances. I am an Anglican, so I could be wrong about that. I think it is very dangerous to say that any human person is above correction. I also think it is a kind of magical thinking to believe that a particular leader cannot make bad doctrinal decisions. The promise of God was that the church would prevail, but that does not mean that no errors would be made along the way.
