- We knew it was coming but Xbox has finally made the announcements about games on other platforms but more important, Phil Spencer chimes in with new details about consoles, games, and discs.
Check out Gamefile.News for the interview - www.gamefile.news/p/microsoft... - Hry
Phil may have found 200 million console users, but I'd bet my life that most don't understand how Game Pass works. It's one thing to advertise Game Pass, but without explaining it, they will never get ahead. Man, every time I bring Game Pass up with friends, family and co-workers, it's the same reaction. 'I thought that was a game streaming service?'. They're shocked you can actually download the game directly as if you're purchasing it etc. Out of all the things Phil needs to tackle, this is the biggest.
Their mistake was calling it the Netflix of games. by associating it with Netflix people thing Streaming.
Yeah facts. I think most People think this as well.
I like owning things, 125m+ strong
@Alexander_Martin that's the thing though do you really own games in today's gaming? Or are you just borrowing the rights to play it because the disc is just a key to download the game now
Let's all flood Phil DM with this info
As long as companies like Sony, MS and other publishers allow me to turn in my physical discs for a digital licence of the game. Phil Spencer talks about respect, that would be a good start.
Knowing what was said, they look like they aren't ok with dropping support for physical customers so I have some faith in them making good on it somehow.
I mean that same company only did backwards compatibility because Microsoft were so focused on it. Otherwise, there would have not been any PS4 support with the PS5. I feel like Microsoft have already created a good start.
@@NeoDarkcloud Yeah, we shouldn’t ignore the initiatives by MS that stirred the industry. Like crossplay, FPS Boost, resolution enhancements etc.
Shame during the "business update" during the "forward compatibility" jargon section, Phil failed to mention the world "physical" even once. He had the gaming industry's attention and failed to communicate something yet again. Obviously didn't want to be on camera saying anything so somebody can play the clip back when he lies for the 1,684,654,325th time.
@@NeoDarkcloud 💯
Animal Crossing STARTED on the Gamecube. It did "meh" numbers. Nintendo DID NOT port it to Playstation, PC or Xbox. They kept making them and kept it exclusive. Now Animal Crossing on Switch is at 44 million and it is STILL exclusive.
Great but that doesn't mean that using that model will work universally for every company.. even PS is moving to PC & others. Exclusives have worked for both companies in the past but the industry is changing now (since 2O2O). Things don't stay the same forever for every company.
Covid sold animal crossing
In the excellent video game Reaper: Tale of a Pale Swordsman, there's a tribe that became very rich by doing the opposite of everyone else.
A lesson there...
@@NeoDarkcloudvery astute observation, great point
@@NeoDarkcloud That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It reminds me of when Wii was outselling PS3 5 to 1 and the cope back then was "It was because of Easter", Anyone around that time know what I'm talking about. Again, you are all braindead clowns. Pathetic.
Surprised no one's mentioned the spelling error in the thumbnail.....
Same here I really don't understand
@@davidjuniorleon6650 maybe it's a clever double meaning, as the announcement is new
200 million consoles is where the Switch is headed. The CEO of the company that made the Switch said, "Exclusives are important".
The Switch (or really no console in gaming history) will never come close to selling 200 million units
You realize corpos are programming you to prioritize what's important, and you're rewarding them for that? Feedback loop. That's just what economics is - it's not some enshrined natural law, except for the law of scarcity.
@@jimmythegamer2231 they will be the one nearest to 200. It's PS2 for now with 152. Switch is at almost 140.
I still buy all my games Physical. Prices are lower and can re-sell them later on and put that money towards my next Purchase. Something that isn't possible with digital media, since there's no ownership when you're simply paying for a license that has expiration date.
I recently got Tekken 8 for 45 euro, while on the digital store its 80 euro.
But then your not taking into account that Microsoft (unlike Sony) do Not lock you to their store so you can get Full Digital games and subscriptions far cheaper than the store, then there is game sharing and of course 'Play Anywhere' where you can play digital games on Xbox and PC and Cloud and only buy the game once.
cheaper for physical....wrong, you can gameshare on xbox between 2 people, so basically you get 2 copies for the price of one, physical copies are going away weather you like it or not.
@@Xdenge420 Not the point. I can't sell digital games, game prices are higher.
I don't share games, Because I don't have family members that play games. So its pointless to me.
@@rinaa6865 I don't like Subscriptions, Because that's basically renting stuff, which I don't like. I like to buy not rent.
Too bad the Windows store sucks on PC. Have to search games in order to find them, because they never appear in my Library...
Don't get me started on Cloud, that's worst possible future !
@@KnightSoulsG Only for their First Party titles, Third Party games still ship on disc. I have Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition, that ships with 3 disc's. Game installed complete off the disc.
My internet is not very fast, So physical is the only way for me to install games at an acceptable rate. Because it takes 3 days for me to download a 150GB !
CRACKDOWN!!! And yes, that game was a ton of fun!😎
I enjoyed all 3 titles very much. I especially liked the fact that 4 players could play co-op in CD2.
That's the one!
'It's not us going 3rd Party! Although we might bring more big-name games to our competitors platform...this doesn't mean anything! Trust us!' 😅
The thing is Xbox charge full price for games that theoretically are cheaper,no packaging, disc etc but they still charge the rrp on that game. I can buy any disc version of a new game cheaper than what Xbox charge for a new title and I actually own it, I'm not just leasing the license to play the game.
Games like Hellblade 2 and Pentiment are actually cheaper digitally than they would be physically. Instead of $60-$70, Hellblade 2 is $50, likely in part due to it being digital-only. Meanwhile, the recently announced physical versions of Pentiment are $35, which is $5 more than the digital version on Xbox.
@jimmythegamer2231 In the UK from certain online sellers I can purchase brand new physical games for less than what's on the marketplace. Regarding Pentiment, it's only being sold by limited Run Games which means, physical it'll only have a smaller number created. Once they are gone, your only chance of buying physical would be at an inflated price from ebay or some other reseller.
As far as I'm aware Hellblade 2 is only getting released digitally?.So just be wary of anyone advertising it physically. Pentiment is being sold by Limited Run Games who only sell a small number, once they are sold, they'll be no more, your only chance of getting physically then would be from a reseller at an inflated price.
Bro thinks that the 2 cents of packaging and the 1 cent disc matters to how much a game should cost. That stuff literally costs pennies when you're buying them millions at a time. Zero impact on what a game should cost..
I own both a PlayStation 5 and an Xbox Series X, but I find myself playing the Xbox more frequently. Additionally, I have a powerful PC equipped with an RTX 4090. I believe it's a smart move to release games on both PlayStation and Nintendo platforms. It allows companies to expand their player base and generate revenue. Since these games are developed by Xbox Studios, Microsoft can gauge player engagement across different platforms, which is valuable information.
I’m the complete opposite. My

Hi-Fi Rush being the youngest in the group.@1 As far as release dates, the others are all 2 to 7 years old. They've had plenty of time for exclusivity on the Xbox brand. It only makes sense to move over to other platforms and try to put some life back in the games. It's a benefit for everybody🎉.
How does it benefit Xbox players?
Time has nothing to do with it. The games are either small and therefore easy to port or they are live service, which means they benefit the most from reaching more player. None of that suggests that they won’t go day one for different kinds of games down the road. In 2016 Phil promised the same slow approach for PC and we know how that ended up going. And that was before XOne fully crashed and XSeries started underperforming XOne.
@@THEFALLOFSONYNothing can save the Xbox console anymore. Either move to PC if you still want a “Microsoft” gaming experience or go to one of the other players for their exclusives and more unique takes on what a console is supposed to be.
@@THEFALLOFSONYFunding? Games making more money and thus strengthening the gaming industry as a whole. Even the playstation fanboys understand this when talking about ps games going to PC...
Xbox owns the largest IP war chest in console gaming, They just need leaders who understand the importance of exclusives.
it would be cool if consoles could have an external disk drive which can be plugged in via usb and bought separately for those who wish to stay physical. it’d also be cool if a digital mint that burns discs as they’re bought were to start existing.
Digital is literally renting a game. It also means it can have content removed . Physical media is king. Also digital has much lower overheads but isn't reflected in the store. These corporations aren't our friends. Consumers need better protection on purchases .
I hope that if the next console is all digital that they add the ability for a plug in disc drive as I've got hundreds of games on disc and I don't want to have 2 consoles linked up.
Also digital games need to drop in price to on release as disc is always cheaper.
Great video
Obviously if they release a new console without a disk drive they should just make the drive buyable as an attachment
@@thedude7315 because for movies. Not games. Discs hold unparalleled quality for movies and TV shows
@@thedude7315 the main reason is for 4k and Blu Ray movies, quality is unparalleled on disc for movies and TV shows. Also there is some backwards compatible games you can only play with a disc
If no disc drives, then why not cartridge based media ?
Because that's even more expensive
I’m curious when Spider-Man is being announced as coming to Xbox.
It ain’t
I think the strong likelihood is that they’ll continue to support disk based games as long as they can, they’ll just sell digital only consoles with a separate disk drive to pass savings to most and pass the expense to those who want the feature
This makes perfect sense, there are so many gamers around the world that don't have great internet.
It might sound insane at a glance but Xbox should actually move to selling games on Cartridge.
NAND chips are still only growing in popularity, this is an industry that will never shrink. It currently costs $10 for a 64GB SD card but that's retail margins, bulk pricing will be less.
Nintendo actually has the best physical media strategy moving forward because a card reader costs nothing to include with the console, and even if cartridges are "more expensive" than Blurays the margins will eventually shift to cartridges being outright cheaper than discs.
The storage card reader slot... means they're already halfway there.
Best Buy is removing physical media like movies and 4k Blu-ray. However for now they are going to continue to sell physical video games. While Best Buy may have stopped selling physical media aka "discs," Amazon and Walmart remain supportive big box partners. “There's a very avid group of consumers that love physical media, and they are committed to that.'' Physical media fandom is all over the internet.
the worst part is Best Buy had great steelbooks
There hasn't been a DVD drive in a console in a decade...
The thing is that a diskless series x is a shitty concept.. we live in a world of digital online services and without a connection to internet you are not able to play games. I dont like the idea that when microsoft decides to ban my console for whatever reason they see fit, i cant do anything about it. But with disk drives I may still be able to play my games on disk.
Also, when you buy a physical game, its yours. Microsoft cannot delete my physical copy of the game so i truly own the copy of the game, unlike a digital copy which can be deleted from my account. Also, I can resell the physical games
Man i think the best thing out of this is crossplay especially for games like grounded. The only thing we need in the future is ability to disable pc from crossplay in cod with cheaters etc.
Are they planning on releasing any good games to PlayStation ?
I really hope phil only puts the double a games on ps5 and keep the triple a games on xbox. Otherwise it ruins the point of owning an xbox. You could get best of both worlds on ps5.
Is that controller in the thumbnail fr? The Nintendo switch coloured one.
Playstation didn't even upload the Trailers of these so i doubt sony will push these xbox games in any substantial form on their Plattform
The black and red Xbox controller has an aesthetic that is reminiscent of a Nintendo Switch controller. While it may not be an official Nintendo product, it is visually appealing and may appeal to fans of both consoles.
If you do not have a physical copy they can take it from you at any moment. You will just buy a license for it as long as they want you to play it.
Everyone laughed at Denis Dyack. He deserved it, but he was on to something.
A universal console seems like a good idea. I really wouldn't mind it.
And I already own a 4080 pc, but I love new hardware.
We* Knew* it was coming
ive bought computers this year with drives.
So what to do with all the physical media we already own? Guess they're ditching the bring your games forward philosophy.
I feel like they could offer a low cost stand alone optical drive. Then the player has a choice.
The problem is these companies expect “growth”. Even though reality dictates there is a finite limit on how many customers you can have. They will always be looking for more and more money. This is a flaw with the economy and it does need to change. I mean, imagine not being happy making billions of dollars in profit as shareholders and investors expect a return on their investments.
In his book 'The Grip of Death', Michael Rowbotham has an interesting section on 'Forced Economic Growth.'

So far it hasn't been indicated that it'll go anywhere other than Xbox, but console wars being as sad as they are Sony fanboys are telling themselves they'll get every single game ever without any evidence.
@@ViridianFlow i mean they (bethesda, nor Disney or even MS) have categorically said it is Xbox exclsuive.
@@mr.sarcastic8833 I don't think they have (but will be happy to be corrected), but "They didn't say it was therefore it isn't" is very bad logic because I could just say "They didn't say it isn't exclusive therefore it is" and be just as bad at reasoning.
The time to believe is when there is evidence.
Obviously based on the data mining of HiFi rush it was planned to come to Switch, which does seem odd considering it is a next-gen only game and doesn't even support Xbox One. How could it run on Switch? I wonder if this is going to be yet another Switch Cloud-streaming game, similar to how they do Control on Switch? Perhaps this was hopeful to be ready soon, but isn't fully baked yet and is coming later in 2024.
Microsoft should do consoles the way Frameworks does LT's.
So yeah, they're here to make money but if the market thinks games will eventually come to Playstation? They're just going to buy Playstations. And they won't subscribe to gamepass- PC gamepass hasn't reallllly worked out for them. So I don't really see how chasing short term revenue and sacrificing long term doesn't hurt them long term?
Like, 200 million isn't a small number. Infinite growth isn't a thing.
Also, yes hifi and pentiment are small titles that have probably hit their "limit" on their current platforms- but when new people ask about what games to play on Xbox that are world class good- generally on forums or by word of mouth I see people say, "pentiment, hifi rush."
Those games aren't there anymore so what "great" games is there even to point to?

@@Donald_Allan Some people have standards and some people live on their knees and swallow whatever is put in front of them. It's pretty obvious which one you are
Disk drives on console are basically only used for installing games and playing movies from disk and the amount of gamers buying physical games is ever shrinking. Because of this I think consoles should be changed to digital and then a usb disk drive should be purchasable separately if you really want one.
Or just keep making disk drives and you can do both.
no
@@chasejackson7248 pointless to build it in. For the purpose it serves of just installing games or playing movies, an external drive would work just as well.
That 200 million number is not a finite figure. There are always new people being born onto this earth. It takes them til they are at least six or seven years old to start playing games. Therefore, there’s just a lag in the growth. Obviously, there are always people dying also. The point being, that saying that there’s no future growth potential is essentially saying that we have reached a plateau in the human race and we are throwing our hands up because we don’t know what else to do.
I don’t believe this has anything to do with any plateau. Because any company always has a chance to take a bigger piece of the pie. Piecing together what Microsoft has said over the past few years, we can see the bigger picture. Exclusive AAA titles are too expensive to make, we would rather do smaller AA experiences with future potential growth, Game Pass is the future of gaming with the potential to reach everyone everywhere, now we are not reaching everybody we thought we could… so, let’s take our titles multi platform and see if we can fish on a bigger platform.
This says to me that the Game Pass model is not working. That it is too expensive to keep up with launching day one AAA titles to, considering our user base. So we have to spread our wings in order to keep growing revenue or we continue to wallow in our own decisions… it’s as simple as that. If 2026 and the next most powerful console in the world, leaping further than any console from any generation before in Power, doesn’t draw in more gamers launching a few years earlier than the competition… I think it’s over from Microsoft in the hardware market.
I think Microsoft as a company has hit its Plateau. Not just Xbox. People don’t trust Windows anymore. As a OS, they haven’t been able to keep up with Apple. Sure, it’s more open source and you can do more with it… But that just leaves it open to hackers and fraud. Which has been an issue for the past 15 to 20 years. So my guess is, Windows 12 is going to be a macOS clone. It’s also going to be on the console, making the next console a PC. with extreme backwards compatibility. Not to mention, the next console will be able to play PC games. Which means, it can also play… PlayStation games. Checkmate.
That is my guess as to the future of Xbox. It’s going to be a powerful closed box PC that is going to be able to play games from everywhere. Which puts Sony in a very awkward position. Not only are they behind on hardware, but now the competition can play their games. and Sony can’t pull back from PC gaming, because based off their latest financials… They need it. We are at an interesting crossroads and scenario right now. If this happens, it will be the biggest and best business move in history. Especially considering that a handheld could be launched, and people around the world could play Xbox, PC and PlayStation games on it. Thoughts?
imagine 8k games with no physical drives! ? cuz its pretty likely to see 8k (resolution games) in the future
Ew
I feel Iike it was kind of obvious that they would be launching games on Nintendo and Sony consoles with what we learned during their battle to aquire Activision.
It’s somewhat impressive how long Xbox held out. “A” for effort, at least. Still an “F” for growing the base Xbox audience though.
If they’re launching a discless Series X does that mean the successor rumoured for 2026 will be digital only?
All I know is Phil releasing four of Xbox exclusives to other consoles and not getting anything back for the Xbox player base made me feel unimportant I truly feel now the Xbox is not the place to be
I know how you feel, because I feel much the same. They're taking their customers for granted.
Anyway, I'll probably get a Switch 2 early on and buy titles on that rather than Xbox. Why support a company that won't support me?
The problem I have with this, is Xbox as a brand doesn't feel strong enough to be making moves that muddy it's value right now. There's still a lot of work to be done to make Bethesda and ABK games feel first party (like did they not see the Blade announcement fiasco?). And in terms of first party games that feel like Xbox games, there's so few. Xbox fans pointed to grounded and sea of Thieves as their safe havens when the first party drought was at its worst (literally 2 years ago). Even now we're getting announcements for first party games going multiplatform BEFORE Xbox fulfills its promises to its gamers about ABK on Game Pass and their first exclusive of the year (Hellblade). In terms of marketing this is a mess. There's an official Xbox wire post about the multiplatform decision (two now) and they're just such desperate damage control. It just astounds me how Xbox thinks it's okay for their brand to deliver some of the most beloved exclusives (Hi Fi Rush is probably the most genuine good sentiment an Xbox exclusive has gotten in a long time) to other platforms while NOT fulfilling promises to their consumers on their platform.
I see so much trying to excuse this behavior and act like it's not an issue. People have really changed their tune on Hi Fi Rush this year compared to when it launched (it's gone from Xbox's best exclusive ever/in a long time to "eh it's not that important"). People don't seem to understand brand marketing. Microsoft doesn't even need exclusives, they need consistency and clear messaging to consumers and they don't have that. When you have to soothe your consumers like toddlers after making a business decision... maybe think some more about that decision? I would at least say wait long enough for a game to feel exclusive like Hi Fi Rush. Hell, Sony takes more time after a release to put a game on PC than Xbox did for Hi Fi Rush on PS.
That's a lot of words. But, nah man. Xbox is doing great, and being a big publisher is going to make more money for games for Xbox. Kind of like how Porsche made SUVs to fund better 911's.
And have you seen PS's margins?
Blu ray drives can stay in the past, I'm on my 3rd PS3 due to blu ray drive failure, Microsoft are so lucky their customers are hapy to pay extra for games on thier platform, then there's the yearly subscription fees, I like cheap games and hate yearly subscription fees so I'm sticking to Steam.
This is definitely just the start..... Starfiled will go to PS5 in 12-18 months. The desire for short term cash is much stronger than the desire to build back a console fan base like they had in the xbox 360 days when xbox had "must play" games. Their next big console won't sell well with no true exclusives. With nearly all console players on playstation Microsoft will just sell a cheap gamepass player to the casual market. Everytime there is a new big playstation release you can see facebook full of people trying to sell their xbox to switch to PS5. Starfield was far too weak a title to be must play console seller.
And yet playstation will continue to be greedy like always.....
@@msvelvetcrowe with no competition they can reduce game budgets, reduce 1st party titles, make consoles more expensive and make the console generation much longer.... it's not a good future with no competition
Seems like a bunch of cope. The time to believe that is when it's official, until then it's just port begging.
Their next console will launch with plenty of exclusives. Playstation exclusives aren't selling enough to warrant their costs. That's why there operating margins fell to below six percent. Everyone's playing fortnite and warzone on their ps5s.
More opinions stated as fact.
I’d rather XBox and PlayStation have bigger internal storage in lieu of the disc drive.
Last I read, game discs nowadays are essentially only a product key, they have almost no game data written on them.
I do not agree with you at all on the discs. Microsoft (and Sony) are pushing towards digital as it makes more money. However, if this extra profit is invested in games I do not have an issue with it.
Lets just see how it goes, lets go
I never was a fan of exclusives. I cant wait to play Grounded with PS and Nintendo gamers. I can also play on my xbox and my kids on their switch and also with my cuzin who has a PS. This is going to be fun.
"Xbox is there to make money". This is way too simplified. Disney would make more money by shutting down Disney plus and putting their IP on all streaming services. But it's not just about making short term profits. It's about creating and preserving your brand and ecosystem.
Looks like Sony will be doing the same and port some of their games to Xbox.

I think we can keep to different consoles but if a game does well why wouldn't you want to port it over to another console. It just increases the sales and exposure. They all thought by having exclusives and buying out studios was the way forward even though they all wanted to have cross play. What did they think was going to happen. Phil said dont think this is a signal to see xbox games coming over. Im ok with these games but im not okay giving it to the other platforms who is not giving us nothing in return. Also, it doesnt grow the xbox ecosystem if they port everything over. And im tired of fake xbox fans thinking this is ok when its not.
The problem isnt other people playing Xbox exclusives the problem will be the slow eventual death of the xbox console. If they dont offer exclusives when they launch there Next "biggest generational leap" console they will severely hinder the sales of that console. Why on earth would mainstream gamers buy an xbox when they can play all xbox titles and playstation titles on a single Sony made console. This will lead to the death of console gaming competition.

As long as we keep on getting games day one into game pass, I could care less.

Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition ships with 3 disc's. The full game is there. No internet required either.
Digital media has no ownership. Its tied to your account, with no way to re-sell. And if you lose access, kiss goodbye to all your so called Games purchases.
Due my internet being slow, I have to rely on Physical media.
Brad, you have a nice studio and a nice presentation. But you've got to stop saying Xbox in the business to make money. Your audience is way past that point. It's how they make money. They are weak on brand. That's the concern. What Xbox is going for is to weaken the brand no matter how much they say it isn't going to do that. In the end, brand is worth more than an individual title selling well. Everyone wants Xbox to make more money.

XBOX SURFACE announcement i dont want to hear about it
Why is Xbox only seen as one platform? Growth in Cloud (Not console), PC GamePass and then Steam (70% profit on pure sales). Sony has zero integration with their account, rewards or trophy system on PC and missing massive marketing opportunity Micrsoft has mastered already.
Phil Spencer said 10 percent of Xbox playtime is over the cloud already.
bro all this world salad when phil spencer literally said we are porting to playstaiton for "the health of xbox business"
definition of sales begging. have some commonsense
we get 4, you get 0 lmaoo

The demise of Xbox begins
I don't care the cost!...Xbox SX2 has to be more PC so we can toggle 4k 60+fps, 1440 120+fps, 1080 240+fps ... uncapped!! Nearly everyone has VRR or Freesync at this point and stop treating us like dumb babies!
Microsoft will become the next Sega
and the world didn't implode like fan boys would have you believe
Grats to MS for making more money on their live service games. Nothing to see here. Make more money to make me more games pls.
XBOX pioneered the following:
- paying for online play
- subscription services
- large GaaS first party titles
- buying third-party publishers for exclusives
- releasing unfinished/bad games
- removing physical media
- day and date PC
- screwing their loyal fan base by making all exclusives multiplat

probably safe to say it wont be long before PS games come to XBox. Sony already made the statement that they want to branch out. With 2 xbox games coming over, only a matter of time.
They said to pc
@chasejackson7248 again, I said only a matter of time. Sony wants sales. Microsoft breaking the barrier.
