  • Rachel Reeves in the House of Commons chamber on Thursday responding to news that on top of the 4% cut in National Insurance payments, Jeremy Hunt is seeking to scrap the tax altogether.
The Labour chancellor lambasted Hunt for not showing the House how he plans to pay for it and compares him to Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng who crashed the economy in October 2022.

It is the same in hospitals around the world. I work on the hospital mergers in Canada. It was all a part of the corporate agenda - running hospitals like businesses, which requires Profit First! I want the whole world to come to realize this fact, this truth. Thank you.

@tokenspirit6140 What we discovered was when the idea of 'running a hospital like a business' was introduced in the NHS, spare beds were classed as waste, so they were reduced to run at 99.9% capacity. empty wards were vilified in the press. Then the pandemic hit. hence 7 million on a waiting list. but it also served their agenda of forcing citizens to turn to private health, making the NHS a emergency service in a 2 tier system.

Dont forget that a huge component of National Insurance is paid by your employer, and scrapping it would mean that they (and their owners) would get to pocket that money. If they remove national insurance and put up income tax and not corporation tax, they're robbing you to give your employer a tax cut.

NI is not a tax as any economist will tell you. It is a contribution to the welfare state and is needed to support organisations such as the NHS. Tax is levied on people who have earned and unearned incomes. I think Mr Hunt needs to be educated and read the national insurance acts that define what the NI contribution is all about. He also needs to get clear in his own mind what the definition of tax is.

@@andrewmackay1350 That is how NI started out, yes. But nowadays the money goes straight into the Treasury coffers along with all other tax money. Hypothecation was abandoned quite a while ago and now NI is just a tax like any other. So it would be fair to abolish Employee NI and increase income tax to compensate, spreading the burden onto unearned income as well as wages.

I lived in Seattle from 2004-2019. My first job was working in a hospital in finance & patient billing. I saw bills just for an ambulance ride in the thousands of dollars. Tens of thousands for anyone who was hospitalised overnight & took up a bed. This was in the mid 2000s, so I can only imagine how much worse it probably is by now.
I had another job (very short lived before I quit in disgust) working for a Health Insurance Co handling complaints. My entire work day consisted of taking calls from people in tears or mental breakdowns because the underwriters refused to pay claims for cancer treatments & such that would cost up to 6 figures, because the insured forgot to disclose a bad back they sought treatment for in the 90s. They abused any excuse they could, to not pay out, despite the premiums they had taken for years. They forced middle class families into bankruptcy, or to have to remortgage their homes to pay medical bills.
The U.S. healthcare system is parasitic & gross. We HAVE to fight this tooth & nail or it will be our own reality very soon
Never forget that their private healthcare system & pharma corps unleashed the opioid pandemic on their own people, with collusion from the state. The FDA approved Oxycontin's "non addictive" status, gave doctors incentives to over prescribe it, and all of this while the U.S military occupied the country that was producing 95% of the world opium supply. Their government & healthcare industry are 100% responsible for the Fentanyl addiction issue that has caused rampant homelessness & death within their own borders. When the opioid epidemic became public knowledge, doctors pulled patients prescriptions, and many turned to heroin and this turned into Fentanyl later on.
I can remember being prescribed a week's worth of Oxy after a simple dental extraction, when it was at its most heinous. GPs & dentists were literally handing this killer drug out like sweets

If i increase the state pension by £3000 but you have to be takes because you are £3000 over the tax limit by £1000, you are not worse off, was the question she couldnt answer. The SNP said that Gordon Brown is also responsible for borrowing more and handing the bill over to the tax payer and she didnt like that truthful fact. Boris and Sunak brought in the rise in Ni suposedly to fund and
"cure" social care. So does yesterday's budget mean that the tories have abandoned social care? 😢

    • @stevemale9936
      @stevemale9936 Před 3 měsíci +9

That pledge was abandoned almost as soon as it was made. Only weeks after announcing it, the percentage that was to be allocated to the social care sector was re-allocated to the NHS for the next five years as the NHS was deemed to have the greater need.
Sunak either didn't understand or didn't care how underpaid and undervalued those working in social care already felt. Intially, that money, while promised, wouldn't be available for five years. That was bad enough but there was the hope that it's on its way. No it isn't. Worse, there's even less that will be available to offer our health profession.
As far as giveaway, pre-election budgets are concerned, the voting public is no longer so gullible and knows that any tax cuts have to be balanced elsewher. They are more often over-compensated for by increasing taxes on everyday items, making them more expensive and making the vast majority of the population more out of pocket.
Of course, assuming Labour wins this year, it will inherit a disaster of nuclear fallout proportions. Repairing that damage is not going to happen in a single term but the Tories will then be crowing from the opposition benches that "Labour is not working" again. Political memories are phenomenally short. It's all too easy to cherry-pick memories and ignore those that don't fit a narrative. Yes, it will be a struggle but don't criticise Labour for it. Remember that it was you, the Conservative Party, that created the mess Labour will be forced to fix.

They're not going to pay it forward to the workforce are they, lets be real. Not to mention NI pays for the NHS so it'd just be mammoth step towards privatisation of healthcare even more than we're already seeing. Just another proposed tory cash grab to feather the nest of their big business party funding on the backs of working people. Im fed up with carrying rich people, about time they got off their bums and shared some of the burden and stop sponging off of the lowest paid, hardest working people in our society.

The country expected the Tories to pull a rabbit out of the bag because they practically announced their plans days before the budget on the media rounds, so it sort of gave that impression that they had an ace up their sleeves that would win over their base (as a con of course, but that's not the point).
Rather, they did sod all nothing, made their base unimpressed and unhappy, and the media has NOT commented on the fact that in the budget notes there is a line that states that there will be no financial review before the election which means this is supposed to be the final budget. Really? Is that all Hunt has? No giveaways to fool people into voting for them only for them to turn off those taps once they win? What am I thinking, of course they didn't because they have ACCEPTED they will not win, so now they don't care and will keep taking from the coffers.
