  • This is a video review of the Staples Dexley mesh task chair. I feel that this chair is best suited for taller and bigger people, who need to sit at their desk for least 3 hrs at a stretch. I purchased this chair in June, 2020, and created this review after 1 week of daily use.

    Went into Staples and tried e every chair on floor. At 6’1” and over 200 lbs. my husband found only the Dexley to have comfortable dimensions, including the other 2 chairs for “big and tall” that were not mesh. Review here was spot on. We also put chair together and decided to put head rest on before setting chair on lift which made putting screws in easy rather than frustrating. Took 40 minutes t9 from unboxing to completion for unhandy people.

    Great video! I have both chairs. I just wish the Dexley had a lock feature when reclining. I'm 5'7 150lb and I find that the Hyken (User for 8 years) gave me back problems because I felt when I sat for long periods at a time my back would strain from compression due to the smaller seat. As for the Dexley (User for 5 months) it has a wider seat and opens up my back. After I switched to the Dexley my back pain slowly went away as my body adjusted to the seat. Hope this helps others when deciding which one to buy!

    This is a great chair for the 150 dollar price point and I am super satisfied with it (and that's saying something as I was a long-time Staples employee and hate the company with a fiery passion). The only feature I'm really missing is the poor recline and inability to lock in the recline. As that's not really a huge deal for me as I don't use that much anyways, I am super happy. I'm 5'10 150 and this chair fits me like a glove. Not sure why other people my size say it doesn't fit them well.
    Edit: I just came back and finished watching the video and didn't realize the single lever on the Dexley stopped the chair from reclining all the way. LOL That would explain why I didn't think it reclined far enough! THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT VIDEO

    Hey @Deepspeak, thanks for this video. I wanted to correct a hiccup -- I decided to get a Hyken after watching this video. I discovered the headrest height is adjustable on the Hyken. It seems about impossible to adjust the height while you're sitting so maybe that's why you missed it. It is not adjustable in the same fashion or extreme of the Dexley, but there are curved slots that raise or lower it about an inch or so of absolute height... but are 4 or 5 notches that adjust the *relative* height of the contour in the headrest. Though this does seem to affect the range of motion, you lose a bit of tilt forward when it is slowest, and you lose a bit of tilt back when it is set highest. As I said, it's a very limited height adjustment but as it affects the angle of the contour as well as the height, it's the difference between having it nestled in your neck or poking you in the base of the skull when you're sitting. Good enough height difference between me and my spouse. I'd give it another look.

    • @deepspeak2513
      @deepspeak2513  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks so much for sharing! Yes, the Hyken headrest has a bit of tilt available- I think I showed it in more detail in the Hyken review, but the full range of motion is greater in the Dexley as it slides up/down.

But I ended up getting the Dexley and it’s very comfy so far. I don’t care for the locking part for inclining because I’m using this chair for gaming so there’s no need for that feature that the Hyken has.

    For anyone looking, the Hyken headrest does move up and down, but it definitely has less range and is rather tough, even 6 months later. You can see the little channels on the pictures of the rear of the chair. There's also a "hack" to make the headrest taller: just install the arch that it connects to upside down (curve toward the top instead of toward the bottom). This only provides about an extra inch max, but could help if that's all you need.

    • @FilmMonger
      @FilmMonger Před 3 lety +1

      @@Gzussss Same for me, the tilt lock was what discouraged me away from it. I'm 5'11" and my neck rests well on it after the "hack", however, if I sit up really straight, I can start to feel the bottom of the headrest on my back and shoulders a bit. I tried lowering the neckrest all the way (about 3 inches) to emulate how it might feel to someone your height, and it isn't as comfortable but it's not bad. Something that bothers me slightly but doesn't bother my shorter family members is the spacing of the armrests. I wish they could go a little farther apart, so it might be worth considering for someone your height. On the Hyken they are about 19" apart.

    Dam, wish i had found this sooner. I'm 6'3 and bought the hyken. The solution i found is that you can invert the Banana shaped headrest support bar to add 3". It solved my problem. One thing I really like about my chair is legs have this little softer plastic feet rest above the wheels that doesn't get cold . A small detail over other metal cold places to place your feet down on.
    I sit crossed legged and normally barefoot, but found that you cant sit like that because of the rubbing bareskin on this mesh material. Next time i'll go for cushion seat, mesh back.
    Not sure if its just me, the front edge of the seat cuts into my thighs and kind of hurts after a while. The dexley looks less protruding

      @@rasheemthebestfirstone3274 It’s pretty nice. Definitely blows my old “gaming chair” out of the water. I replaced the casters with blade wheels and it rolls like a dream. The headrest is adjustable and actually tall enough for me. The recline is very nice as well. It’s no Herman Miller but for the price it’s amazing. Hope this helps.

      I want to correct this -- I am currently sitting on a Hyken. There is a small amount of adjustment for the headrest height. It is nearly impossible to make sense of when you are sitting, so that might explain why Deepspeak missed it.

    • @deepspeak2513
      @deepspeak2513  Před 3 lety +1

      I was able to "tilt" the Hyken headrest up/down and I think I show it in the video, but only the Dexley allowed a "slide" up/down movement. Was that your experience as well? Thanks for sharing!

    • @soylencer
      @soylencer Před 3 lety

      @@deepspeak2513 the Hyken has up/down slats as well as a few notches of tilt. It's not fully correct for me to say that it is very mobile, but If the point of the height adjustment on a headrest is to change where it sits between your head and neck, it does go up and down. Do you have a discord? I could send you a picture if you don't have access to the chair any longer

    The hyken headrest has a small up/down adjustment for the headset as well. Look at the back and you will see it has slots to slide up/down. At least all the videos of it show that and the one I have directly from Staples years ago has it.

    • @deepspeak2513
      @deepspeak2513  Před 3 lety

      Mine has the slot as well, but since the bolt is screwed in from the front, you cannot loosen the bolt unless you remove the mesh from the headrest. My guess is that it is not user-adjustable.

      Laminate is pretty tough but a floor protector might be better for the long run. Or perhaps do what I did- replace the stock wheels with inline skate wheels. Rolls better and better for the surface.

    Undocumented feature, you can unbolt and reverse the arm rest pads on the Dexley to have them further back.
    The spring tensioner knob is initially is very stiff, two hand grip loosens it up after a few rounds.
    Chair wheels no longer have spokes, not that it matters, its just aesthetics.
    Also a mesh chair winter trick, zip up an old inside out jacket over the backrest, also helps if the grippy mesh is off putting to you.

      dexley arrived, im very glad I stuck with the larger chair for my body. I’m 6’ 2”, 200lbs. Im not sure I like the chair but SO glad i didnt go with the smaller hyken. The Dexley is lower to the ground than Im used to and seems a bit too light for my body to feel fully relaxed in. we’ll see - I may just not be used to it.
      while the lack of a locking mechanism for the reclined position is unusual it doesnt seem to be a problem for me initially. my body weight locks it more or less.
      the chair this is replacing is a 5 year old tall backed reclining ikea office/task chair. i had started constructing the dexley using the base of the old chair which had a recline lock - it was compatible with the seat and seemed like it would work until i attempted to connect the seat back whos holes did not match up. its too bad as the base of my old chair still works well and is a bit more substantial than what they chose for the dexley. The dexley is also a little too low for my taste in comparison to my old chair.
      on the fence if im going to keep this chair or go for something a step up. so challenging to shop for something like an office chair without visiting a show room.
