Unless hypocrisy is defined differently this is hypocrisy of newer level. If we are afraid that we can’t compete and we have to add duties to make Chinese cars less competitive, why don’t we just say so and be honest about it, why we have to say in such way to make us look better and demonize others? A "Camry" in North America isn't the same vehicle sold in China. Japanese automakers custom design cars, depending on regional regulations, safety & emission standards, or local preferences. And these days, increasingly cars are designed in North America.
      Thus, it's impossible to bring over a car sold in China to the North America market, and sell it as a North American "Camry." Toyota actually has the lowest Operating Profit margin in the North American segment of all regions. They lost money in FY2022 in North America, and FY2023 was around 3% operating profit margin. The high cost of employees and distribution, as well as meeting ever-changing emission regulations is what makes cars increasingly more expensive in North America.

      It's not a non-existent industry, since Canada builds about 1.5 million cars every year across the river from Detroit. However it is a non-COMPETITIVE industry, and that's why they want to keep the Chinese out because Chinese EVs would immediately destroy the Canadian auto manufacturing sector in short order.
      Same reason why Australian consumers were stuck with expensive and relatively non-competitive cars for decades as their government to tried maintain their own domestic auto manufacturing sector. It wasn't until they finally gave up on that around 2010, and stopped making cars in Australia, when Australian consumers could finally buy cars from all over at competitive prices, now including an influx of Chinese cars into Australia.

      @tren133 Před 2 hodinami

      @@nbstreet0631Does Canada build EVs? No. But Canada wishes to keep building cars. Therefore they must eventually transition to building EVs because EVs are the future. But Canadian EV production will be expensive and inefficient because they are so far behind the Chinese, who are building EVs on a mass scale NOW. How can this future expensive inefficient Canadian auto manufacturing industry compete with the massive Chinese EV industry which already exists? It cannot. So the only solution is to prevent Chinese EVs from coming into Canada, since that will be the only way to preserve those jobs.
      The future Canadian EV industry will NEVER be competitive with China's, so if Canada wishes to continue to build cars, they need to subsidize that industry forever and consumers in Canada will need to pay more for EVs as a result. Canada is a true free democracy, no? In that case, the Canadian people can decide if this should go on, and for how long. In the meantime, just deal with lack of choice and higher cost for EVs. Canada is a rich country so I'm sure their consumers can deal with this no problem!

    Greetings from Vancouver. I have just bought a Tesla Model Y. The reason the federal Liberals are considering Chinese car tariffs is because there is a federal election coming up and the Liberals are panicking due to poor poll results and are groping at straws. They are hoping they can get votes from ICE automotive sector workers. If high quality cheaper EVs from China are imported duty/tariff free, bring it on! Canadian federal and provincial governments have recently given tax breaks for battery manufacturers, similar to the USA. T hat is what we need more of, not killing EV purchase alternatives in favour of tariffs to protect ICE car production.

    As a Canadian, I would welcome Chinese EVs entering our market to increase competition and offer more buying choices for Canadians, hopefully helping to drive prices down.
    The Trudeau government claims that the electrification of transportation is of paramount importance if Canada is to meet it's carbon reduction targets. However, if they were to impose very high tarrifs on Chinese EVs, that would be a counter productive measure to reach those goals.
    As other commentators have noted, Canada is a vassal state of the US and will tend to align its policies with US objectives. Furthermore, when the US car makers cut jobs from their plants or closed them altogether, they usually start north of the border. If it wasn't for the Japanese auto makers that opened plants in Canada, our auto industry would be much weaker. So why wouldn't we welcome the entry of Chinese auto makers into Canada like we did for the Japanese or Koreans over the past decades. The more competition, the better for the consumers.
    But with the spineless policies and sheer incompetence of the Trudeau government, I'm not too optimistic. The Canadian market is very underserved with very little diversification compared to our neighbours to the south or similarly sized global markets and we tend to pay quite a lot more for our goods. We always get the short end of the stick up here.

    Canadian politicians helps Canadian capitalists make more money. Keep Canadians as their captive market. They don’t care if you can afford it or not. They just want your money. When Germany export 70% of their cars is okay and Chinese exports 20% of their cars is over capacity. Many west politicians are just unreasonable and racist.

    Pierre Trudeau was the first western leader (Canada) to go to China and chip away at the embargoes we held them in at the time. Nixon arrived shortly after with Kissinger. Trudeau recognized the fact that no country is an island unto itself (even OZ), we are all citizens of the earth and need to find ways of getting along, not fighting with each other. I don't like communism anymore than anyone else but I'm not a great fan of what we call democracy today either. Meanwhile, our forests are burning, hurricanes are drowning us, our lungs and hearts are failing because of toxic emissions and we want to send the rescue team away because we don't like their politics. Crazy. China is the world's leader in transitioning away from ICEs and fossil fuels and instead of joining them, we worry about next quarter profit and loss statements, not wanting to invest in our own salvation. If it wasn't for Tesla, we would have no firewalls at all.

    The Model 3 + Y coming to Canada are made in China. If import duties are too high Tesla could send US made cars to Canada. The Canadian governments have arranged long term subsidies to legacy auto to transition to EV's and build battery factories. Canada and the US are way behind China and getting further behind. The government had their heads up their butts pretending they are doing what is best. It is all acting. Canada's PM was a Drama teacher before becoming PM. He knows how to act but does not know how to do the job. This causes stress and requires frequent vacations.

    Understandably your are frustrated that now you find out that all over the world nations recognize the threat of the CCP supported EV companies that are flooding their markets and killing their national industries. And act accordingly
    They already have seen it happen with the solar panel industry, with China now dominating nearly 90% of the global market.
    As Europe is late in the game of putting tariffs on Chinese EV's, Canada is, may be, a bit ahead of the game.
