Unless hypocrisy is defined differently this is hypocrisy of newer level. If we are afraid that we can’t compete and we have to add duties to make Chinese cars less competitive, why don’t we just say so and be honest about it, why we have to say in such way to make us look better and demonize others? What happened to the righteousness and bravery that I knew and admired? Just be brave, admire other’s successes, learn from them and continue to compete. Camery gen 9 is selling in China for US$15,000. Why can't we get it here?? Blocking cars made in China only benefits for Japanese and Korean car companies.
A "Camry" in North America isn't the same vehicle sold in China. Japanese automakers custom design cars, depending on regional regulations, safety & emission standards, or local preferences. And these days, increasingly cars are designed in North America.
Thus, it's impossible to bring over a car sold in China to the North America market, and sell it as a North American "Camry." Toyota actually has the lowest Operating Profit margin in the North American segment of all regions. They lost money in FY2022 in North America, and FY2023 was around 3% operating profit margin. The high cost of employees and distribution, as well as meeting ever-changing emission regulations is what makes cars increasingly more expensive in North America.
@@yo2trader539 what's emission standards in China? Last time I checked, the US was abandoning their carbon plans while China accelerating theirs. China even got tax based on emission and engine volumes. I want you all back up your "made in china bad" agenda with some facts instead of circle jerking the same narrative for 3 decades.
Still the same chassis, same framework, even the same engine. Do you know how much it would cost to develop a new car?
@@yo2trader539 Why import ICE Camry to Canada?
Protecting a non-existent industry from non-existent cars 😅
Exactly!!
It's not a non-existent industry, since Canada builds about 1.5 million cars every year across the river from Detroit. However it is a non-COMPETITIVE industry, and that's why they want to keep the Chinese out because Chinese EVs would immediately destroy the Canadian auto manufacturing sector in short order.
Same reason why Australian consumers were stuck with expensive and relatively non-competitive cars for decades as their government to tried maintain their own domestic auto manufacturing sector. It wasn't until they finally gave up on that around 2010, and stopped making cars in Australia, when Australian consumers could finally buy cars from all over at competitive prices, now including an influx of Chinese cars into Australia.
@@tren133 Canada build EVs? Which Plant?
@@nbstreet0631Does Canada build EVs? No. But Canada wishes to keep building cars. Therefore they must eventually transition to building EVs because EVs are the future. But Canadian EV production will be expensive and inefficient because they are so far behind the Chinese, who are building EVs on a mass scale NOW. How can this future expensive inefficient Canadian auto manufacturing industry compete with the massive Chinese EV industry which already exists? It cannot. So the only solution is to prevent Chinese EVs from coming into Canada, since that will be the only way to preserve those jobs.
The future Canadian EV industry will NEVER be competitive with China's, so if Canada wishes to continue to build cars, they need to subsidize that industry forever and consumers in Canada will need to pay more for EVs as a result. Canada is a true free democracy, no? In that case, the Canadian people can decide if this should go on, and for how long. In the meantime, just deal with lack of choice and higher cost for EVs. Canada is a rich country so I'm sure their consumers can deal with this no problem!
I would buy a BYD if they were sold here in Canada. Alas, we have zero Chinese EV’s here.
Greetings from Vancouver. I have just bought a Tesla Model Y. The reason the federal Liberals are considering Chinese car tariffs is because there is a federal election coming up and the Liberals are panicking due to poor poll results and are groping at straws. They are hoping they can get votes from ICE automotive sector workers. If high quality cheaper EVs from China are imported duty/tariff free, bring it on! Canadian federal and provincial governments have recently given tax breaks for battery manufacturers, similar to the USA. T hat is what we need more of, not killing EV purchase alternatives in favour of tariffs to protect ICE car production.
Canada is screwed being a US vassal and having an incompetent Federal government.
Canada only wants to protect it's own Auto Industry, like the US.
Yes & Poilievre will surely put the tarrif on Chinese product, including EV, so make no sense that Trudeau is just trying to buy votes, same vote the Conservative are looking for.
The quality of life in Canada has fallen drastically, and it ain't because of Chinese EV's.
How embarrassing!
I am quite sure most Canadians are not as stupid and as subservient to the Americans as this politician.
As a Canadian, I would welcome Chinese EVs entering our market to increase competition and offer more buying choices for Canadians, hopefully helping to drive prices down.
The Trudeau government claims that the electrification of transportation is of paramount importance if Canada is to meet it's carbon reduction targets. However, if they were to impose very high tarrifs on Chinese EVs, that would be a counter productive measure to reach those goals.
As other commentators have noted, Canada is a vassal state of the US and will tend to align its policies with US objectives. Furthermore, when the US car makers cut jobs from their plants or closed them altogether, they usually start north of the border. If it wasn't for the Japanese auto makers that opened plants in Canada, our auto industry would be much weaker. So why wouldn't we welcome the entry of Chinese auto makers into Canada like we did for the Japanese or Koreans over the past decades. The more competition, the better for the consumers.
But with the spineless policies and sheer incompetence of the Trudeau government, I'm not too optimistic. The Canadian market is very underserved with very little diversification compared to our neighbours to the south or similarly sized global markets and we tend to pay quite a lot more for our goods. We always get the short end of the stick up here.
Ford and GM were the first companies to commit to building EV's in Canada. Honda and Toyota are following suit. Battery Giga factories to build batteries are under construction with the first to open next year.
Yes and all these projects subsidized to the tune of tens of bilions of dollars courtesy of the Canadian tax payers. If anything doesn't work out as planned in this extremely competitive market, these companies will bail out leaving Canada to pick up the pieces and part of the tab. Chinese EV manufacturers and battery companies are over a decade ahead in terms of technological development compared to American, European and Japanese car makers, the only exception being Tesla and Hyundai remaining competitive.
@@JesusMartinez-mk6fc Yes. The Chinese have subsidized their EV industry to the tune of over a TRILLION Dollars. That does not include building car carrier ships to subsidize the transportation of those cars. If we do not fight back we will not have any car manufacturing at all just like Australia. Vehicles are the second largest Canadian export by value at $42.9 billion in 2020 of which 93% was exported to the U.S. I believe that this is worth fighting for.
With 500,000 jobs tied to the car industry in a country of about 37 million, and the fact the prime minister has a minority government, and an election now about 2 years away, and their polling numbers dropping, every vote counts. Reality doesn't even come second. BTW, BYD already has a truck plant in Canada, so expanding it to a car line or 2 would not be that troublesome.
I believe the population of Canada is currently 41 million plus. Also, I hope as a Canadian, that you are aware of our Free Trade Agreement with USA and Mexico. The automotive industry in the 3 countries is highly integrated..so much so that Canada provides huge amount of parts for cars made in US and also builds American cars for US distributors. Canada cannot just arbitrarily allow Chinese EVs to enter North America if the North American Free Trade Agreement does not allow it.
The Electric Viking must be getting some loose change from his Chinese partners. Either that or he is not very familiar with the Auto Industry. EV Revolution Show has driven both and given reviews.
It's a mad, mad world. Shouldn't Canadians be thankful for being supplied with affordable Chinese-made EVs?
I live in Canada and have asked where the Tesla cars are made? There response was that they receive all their cars from China. So I also asked can I order a car from Texas or Fremont they said that all orders come from China. My point is that the cars ordered from China means Canadians should get a less expensive car from China because they produce them for less than in USA because of the exchange rate between our 2 counties. My point is they are “NOT” subsidized like all other Chinese cars are such as BYD. Which btw we cannot purchase that car or any other Chinese subsidized vehicle in Canada 🇨🇦. If we were able to produce cars in Canada 🇨🇦 I’m convinced they could not be produced at a cost any Canadian could afford because of the high manufacturing costs in Canada 🇨🇦.

Unlike Australia, Canada produces a lot of cars for North America so they need to protect these high paying jobs. There are no ways Canada can compete with china in terms of price considering Canadian salaries are much higher.
Thats the theory. All these bailouts to the North American auto companies for what? They are 10 years behind in E.V.s!
Exactly. And same can be said for any product. There is no way to compete with a country where a meal costs $1. 500% tariffs on everything and then pick which kinds of products you need and want and low tariffs on that.

Wealth is not how much money you have, but how much you can buy with the money you own.
You are missing all the history and culture regarding Canadian car manufacturing. Net exporting of cars and parts since WWII has and is important to Canadian jobs and economy as integration with US vehicle manufacturing is a decades-old arrangement. Transition to EV related products is existential. Getting swamped by dumping from hyper subsidized competitors before getting started may appease instant-gratification consumerism but could be harmful, even factoring in attractive quality and emission reduction. Each country considers its own.
If I had to guess it's just saber rattling to warn China to build factories in Canada - and factories in the US just might satisfy them. Probably just, "Bring money and jobs so we can hear".
😂There is aBYD factory in Markham or new market. Dont you worry, the Chinese manufacture will come in once they smell the climate is right. They are pretty much steer clear the states in Canada for now because they dont want their key company people get kidnapped by the local authority
does Canada have a government? that's a joke!
Canadians will be over paying for their EVs because of lack of competition.
Does Canada even make cars?? ANY cars?? What's a car that's made in Canada??? Why does Canada even care about Chinese EV IF CANADA DOES NOT EVEN MAKE ANY CARS THEMSELVES???
yes, factories for Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda, and Fiat. Took 2 seconds with Google.
I’m Canadian I don’t even know Canada has any EVs, how does it impact something they don’t have.
lol what. There are no evs from China here. There’s some coming. The polestars Some Volvos. But that’s it. This is insane and wrong
Polstar and Volvo are Chinese made sold in Canada.
They can't flood your market if they are not good and cheap or the people refuse to buy them, can't stop the tide if you can't come up with a product that is competitive.
Nothing new really, same happened with Japan when the entered western markets in the 80s/90s. Canada, EU, USA are seeking for China to commit to the similar thing that Japan agreed to: opening local factories, creating in-country jobs, opening up parts/components chains to local market suppliers. EU is also seeking repatriation of the European brands Chinese companies bought, to comit to making cars within the EU. For now this is just tariff flexing, if China agrees to such the tariffs and investigation will evaporate.
The conservative opposition will gladly ban Chinese EVs as well and will drop all incentives for any EV, probably tax then as well. The US didn't have any Chinese EVs either but slapped 100% tariffs on them.
Many Polstar and Volvo EV in Canada. The current Liberal government. are on the way out. Chinese EV will do well in Canada. The Zeekr is expected in 2025.
If the federal government goes to the Conservatives, the EV market in Canada is done. The Cons are in bed with big oil and big business. More so than the Liberals. All EV incentives will be gone. In fact, they will add extra charges on EVs like they currently do in Conservative run provinces. They will literally set us back 50 years.
i am canadian... please send millions of chinese cars here. we cant afford $55k for a car, chinese cars at $9k would be God sent!
As per suggestion from your police chief, leave your car key under the front door mat. A $9k car probably cause you less damage in the wallet.
Some luxury Chinese EV sell more than 55k. over 110K mabe, but yes, most Chinese EV(middle price level) are around 30-60K. There is 9K EV(sea gull), but it is really just afford level, which you wont like it.
Even though Canada does not have any Chinese EV's at this point, we do have a free trade agreement with the Us. If Chinese cars were to come to Canada tariff free, they could then be transported int the US avoiding their 100% tariff. We are being pressured by the US to put up barriers.
My worst fear is this is just part of a larger plan for a w a r. We need to fight for peace, no war please.
We need competition. This is sad, give Canadians a choice. Competition here is always put down, look at our cell phone rates. Never have seen a Chinese car in Canada. Vinfast is here tho. And Im in Ottawa
I live in Quebec, and we have absolutely no Chinese electric vehicles. But we see tons of Teslas, Kias and other brands. We simply mirror American policies all the time, because we are one economic bloc.
"They'll spend a lot of time deciding what actions best to protect local autoworkers" AS I SIT HERE ON A 2 YEAR LAYOFF CAUSE FORD AND STELLANTIS CAN'T GET THEIR HEAD OUT OF THEIR ASS AND MOVE FORWARD WITH THE TRANSITION
I know some Chinese students working at McDonald's or Burger King's. Some people will refuse the food served by the Chinese staff.
If it was up to me I’d welcome all Chinese EV brands so long as they set up plants, here, manufacturing those EVs.
There's a Canadian EV industry?
Yes GM builds the Brightdrop in Canada. The Dodge Charger EV will be built in Canada. Honda is opening a battery plant in Canada. Chrysler builds the PHEV Chrysler Pacifica in Canada
We do. Tesla engineering office in Toronto. Batteries industries, Lion trucks and buses in Quebec. Graphite and many metals required for batteries are here and often own by Chinese.
Canadian politicians helps Canadian capitalists make more money. Keep Canadians as their captive market. They don’t care if you can afford it or not. They just want your money. When Germany export 70% of their cars is okay and Chinese exports 20% of their cars is over capacity. Many west politicians are just unreasonable and racist.
What happened to fighting climate change? I guess geopolitics is more important.
Same here, no Chinese EV anywhere. Trudeau BS
@4:14 *Canada* is a very _small_ market. It's basically a _branch plant economy_ with a _branch plant mentality_ where decisions are made _elsewhere._ (†)
Those decisions that affect the 36 million citizens who live there are _usually_ made in the boardrooms in the 'States.
†) Except for *Québec* _most_ of the decisions reached in *Canada* are driven by *Britain* and the *'States.*
Pierre Trudeau was the first western leader (Canada) to go to China and chip away at the embargoes we held them in at the time. Nixon arrived shortly after with Kissinger. Trudeau recognized the fact that no country is an island unto itself (even OZ), we are all citizens of the earth and need to find ways of getting along, not fighting with each other. I don't like communism anymore than anyone else but I'm not a great fan of what we call democracy today either. Meanwhile, our forests are burning, hurricanes are drowning us, our lungs and hearts are failing because of toxic emissions and we want to send the rescue team away because we don't like their politics. Crazy. China is the world's leader in transitioning away from ICEs and fossil fuels and instead of joining them, we worry about next quarter profit and loss statements, not wanting to invest in our own salvation. If it wasn't for Tesla, we would have no firewalls at all.
The Model 3 + Y coming to Canada are made in China. If import duties are too high Tesla could send US made cars to Canada. The Canadian governments have arranged long term subsidies to legacy auto to transition to EV's and build battery factories. Canada and the US are way behind China and getting further behind. The government had their heads up their butts pretending they are doing what is best. It is all acting. Canada's PM was a Drama teacher before becoming PM. He knows how to act but does not know how to do the job. This causes stress and requires frequent vacations.
US and Canada aren't behind, they are stuck in the 19th century mentality, wake up
@@my2cents395 A while ago, Tesla was bringing Models 3 and Y from the Shanghai plant. That is no longer the case. My new Model Y just arrived 3 weeks ago from the Fremont plant in California. Tesla stopped bringing in Chinese made cars to Canada when the updated Model 3 started being made in Shanghai. Tesla did not want Canadians driving better model 3’s than Americans could buy. Things could still change now that the new model 3’s are being made in the USA for USA customers.
Canada is such a joke😂
is usa's lapdog and kiss'n usa's bum.
I have not seen ONE Chinese EV yet in Canada. and I drive daily..........lies - our PM? He's hanging on and no body want's him anymore - Not good at his job. Canadians are nice ppl.
the problem is after XiJinping slashing his face saying he is not honest and making lies up, he turns our hate Chinese a big way. Think about when his father was the PM, China/Canada are pals.
I used to respect and admire Canada, but these days I laugh at it
Common, we are still better than the US and Most countries in Europe. Some stupid things we do just because the US has us by the ba$$s. 😂
It is state directed. Doesn't sound like stupidity to me. But yes there are no chinese EVs in Canada for some reason. Not currently the fault of the government, but as soon as they put the tariffs on them it will be.
😂BIG OIL 🛢️⛽don't like to lose $$$ in Canada
Sam, your view on what is happening in Canada is, seems to me, biased by you being a BYD Investor.
Understandably your are frustrated that now you find out that all over the world nations recognize the threat of the CCP supported EV companies that are flooding their markets and killing their national industries. And act accordingly
They already have seen it happen with the solar panel industry, with China now dominating nearly 90% of the global market.
As Europe is late in the game of putting tariffs on Chinese EV's, Canada is, may be, a bit ahead of the game.
They are probably thinking "better safe than sorry".
When West was dominating on the world market for everything with high prices it was call Technical Advantage and a Free market, and it was 'good' only for them, to stay rich !!!
When China is taking over the market with affordable prices, now it is over-capacity and flooding the markets and it must be stop ???
China pull out most of the population out of poverty,
west is pushing most of the population into a poverty !
What? What Chinese ev?? Where and how? No Chinese dealerships here. wtf!
Cars already more expensive here in Canada compared to the US. We need cheaper EVs from wherever
To correct the video, the Polestar 2 is for sale in Canada, so a Chinese domestic brand is for sale here. It's not dumping though.
For that price, there is reasonble ground to fire class action law suit being price gouging. Lol
@@user-jh6vt8vx4v Google failed to translate your comment to English. It said something about, "unintelligible." Not sure what that meant.

@@user-jh6vt8vx4v You would have to be a dimwit to buy a Polestar over a Tesla, but there is no dumping going on.
From Canada, every car sold here has Chinese parts. Polstar and Volvo are Chinese made sold in Canada.
*It also has American parts, Brazilian parts, European parts, Mexico parts by the way, all water molecules has a hydrogen part, so does sulfuric acid everybody with half brain knows it*

You forgot Canadian parts, everybody with half brain knows that.
USA owned Canada?
THANK YOU, SAM, for REPORTING this in YOUR VIDEOS!
I'm Canadian, and I live in CANADA.
CANADA DON'T HAVE ANY CHINESE AUTO COMPANY IN CANADA AND NOT A SINGLE CHINESE ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN CANADA .
TESLA IS AN U.S.A COMPANY .
This is just another BULL SHIT from the CANADIANS GOVERNMENT.
Electric Vehicles in CANADA are Ridiculously Crazy Expensive , that is why many middle class Canadians couldn't afford to switch to drive an EV.
I WOULD LOVE TO WELCOME AFFORDABLE CHINESE ELECTRIC VEHICLES FOR ALL MIDDLE CLASS CANADIANS.
Hope to see this happen someday?

Remember three ev makers got 30billion from Canadian governments
Calling a wole nation stupid is just another degree of stupidity.
but your PM/government is democratically elected by your whole nation, is it not?
I agree. This government has invested in battery manufacturing but in order to do so has to work with legacy auto which has been slow to adopt EV production.

I am a Canadian... basically, in the auto manufacturing world, Canada is joined at the hip with the United States... vehicles made in the US or Mexico (with true US and Mexico content) can be sold without duties in Canada (the reverse is also true). For this particular industry, Canada will always closely parrot what the US says...
Canada doesn't have any car manufacturer companies. We're like Australia in that respect. We should have EVs from everywhere. Wait times to get non-tesla EVs are months to YEARS!
I am not aware of any Chinese EV here in Canada… polestar maybe, but that is it.
Canada has NO automobile industry.... this doesn't make any sense why Canada would do this when these EVs are wanted in Canada.
The only truth is that Canada cars are crap ?
Canada cars are crap? Which ones dude. Please do tell
Do we even have cars made by Canada??@@windowman9665
Ya canadian car ?
Nonsense
Canada has cars??
No wonder you don't drive 😁
Chinese car makers have so much overcapacity that I needed to wait "only" 4 months to get my new car (in Europe) ...
But but but I thought there was no demand for EVs. 😅
If it's a problem, perhaps Canada should help start native car companies
Tax payers are the one that will have to pay for it or have to buy local crap cars.
Honestly the G7 are so hypocritical when it comes to green energy. I have been to China several times and have driven in tons of EVs from taxis to didi and my friends BYD model car. The EVs not only look beautiful they run smooth, quite and the noise pollution is so low in some areas its amazing just listening to nature.
Chinese made Ev's in Canada. Tesla imports also Polestar that's all that come to mind. No BYD ,Geely, Nio .
