The American debut of British Empire middleweight champion Dave Sands indicated Sugar Ray Robinson's world title won't go to Sands' native Australia for some time, if ever. Before a paltry Chicago Stadium crowd last night, Sands won an unanimous decision over Hawaii's Carl (Bobo) Olson in a dull 10 rounder that found Sands in a bad way at the finish. Sands, fighting for a promised shot at Robinson's crown, wove and punched with both fists creditably, but at the end he was so arm-weary he was hanging on desperately. If the fight went one more round, Olson might have hung a finishing punch on Sands' jaw which was unprotected most of the 10th round. Last night's televised bout followed a monotonous pattern of Olson boring in to Sands' counter-punching." -Associated Press
Unofficial UP scorecard (AP did not announce a card) - 6-1-3 Sands
Referee Norm McGarrity warned Sands for low blows in two rounds but did not penalize him.
The IBC were hoping for an impressive showing by Sands and were going to match him up in Madison Square Garden with either Rocky Graziano, Walter Cartier or Danny Nardico the following month in order to push for a title fight with Sugar Ray Robinson. However, possibly due to the lackluster pattern of this fight, the Garden debut never happened and he ended up fighting Henry Brimm in Buffalo, NY.
Sands blamed his performance on the humidity of Chicago Stadium.
Purses: Both Olson and Sands received $1,215 apiece (their 25% guarantee from the gate), plus $1,500 apiece from TV monies.
