  • Replacing a range hood with an "over the range" microwave. It's a relatively simple DIY project that involves installing an outlet and a microwave into a cabinet that is over the stove.
    Be sure to check with your local building codes when doing any kind of electrical work.

    Excellent Video!
    My issue, I have a tile back splash and I need to figure out stud location. Will I need a diamond drill but so I don't destroy my tile? I need to make sure my stud finder can scan through the tile to see my stud or is it backer board. Having to think about all of this.

    • @KyleMerl
      @KyleMerl  Před 3 lety +1

      You might be able to tell where your studs are based on where the screws are that hold the cabinet to the wall. I'm assuming you have a cabinet above where the microwave is going like I do. Good luck!

    Great video. I have a tiled back splash on the wall and behind the original range hood. I am trying to figure out my options. If I can find the studs can I just drill thru the tiles and mount the bracket and the microwave over top of the tile? The issue will be if I can't find the studs, seems like the only option in that case is to remove the tile from the drywall so I can locate the studs. Would you agree?

    • @KyleMerl
      @KyleMerl  Před 3 lety +5

      You can use a diamond bit to drill through tile. If you have a cabinet above where the microwave is going you can find the studs through the cabinet. Alternatively, you could locate studs on opposite side of wall if all else fails. You shouldnt need to remove tile.

      Thanks! The outlet parts not so tough. Just have to make sure the powers off. I think the most annoying part is getting the templates on the wall perfectly in position. If you decide to take it on good luck!

    • @KyleMerl
      @KyleMerl  Před 2 lety +1

      Yea it has filters. To remove you just pull them to the side and then down. They come out pretty easy. The stores usually wont sell replacements tho... you'll probably need to order online

    So I installed an outlet prior to removing the vent hood. My question is whether or not it is safe to just cut the wire that was connected to the vent hood and plug my microwave into the newly installed wall outlet?

    • @KyleMerl
      @KyleMerl  Před rokem +1

      You shouldn't just leave it there. I'd remove it completely. It's probably tied into the light or something else in these kitchen. As a temporary measure you could terminate it into a junction box... put wire nuts on the hot n neutral so that they cant touch each other. But really that wire should be removed

    • @KyleMerl
      @KyleMerl  Před rokem +1

      You'll need to check the building codes in your area to be sure. It's possible that your recirculating vent hood is grandfathered in.

    Removing a regular hood and installing a microwave hood, but the distance between the stove top and microwave is not enough. It needs at least 17 inches distance. How do i solve without buying a low profile microwave?

    • @KyleMerl

      @KyleMerl  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I dont have any but you basically are just installing an outlet, so I'd look for tutorials on that. An important thing to keep in mind is if the outlet is not inside the wall you'll need a metal box, as I did here.

    Did you check if the hood is dedicated? Per code you would need a dedicated outlet. You sure that hood was not tapped into the lighting?

    • @Raven-fe2ih
      @Raven-fe2ih Před rokem +1

      I was thinking the same exact thing…

    • @mrdude3540
      @mrdude3540 Před rokem

      @@Raven-fe2ih for example I am remodeling my kitchen and I checked the circuit that the wires for the hood are going. They are tapped into the stove circuit which is a 20 Amp breaker. I should be ok I think only thing if any will be the circuit tripping but per code that is a no no if I am not mistaken. If I ever sell the home I might run into a problem with the inspector more likely not but it is a possibility. It's better to play it safe and give it its own dedicated circuit. Run some romex up in the attic or in the basement run it to the panel add a new circuit bam done. There's plenty of vids on youtube that show how to add a circuit to a panel.

    • @KyleMerl
      @KyleMerl  Před rokem +1

      I've never lived in a house where the microwave was on a dedicated circuit. Never had issues with selling/buying a house. If it's just lighting I wouldnt expect you to have any issues. Obviously , it's always best to do it to code though.

  • @aafunmedia

    Does Range Hoods automatically are wired to 20amps breakers? If mine is wired to a 10amp breaker can I still connect the new range top microwave to it? Great video btw 👌

    • @KyleMerl
      @KyleMerl  Před 3 lety +2

      I'm not an electrician, but I wouldn't be comfortable wiring a microwave to a 10 amp circuit. I think most microwaves want 20 amps. the manufacturer should specify the requirements though.

    • @aafunmedia
      @aafunmedia Před 3 lety

      @@KyleMerl I think I meant 15amps. Usually all the outlets on newer homes has 15amps in kitchens. But what about the cable going to the existing Hood, is that usually 20amp or 15amp circuit? And/dedicated?
