    If you rince the heck out of the gravel then soak it for for a day with clean water and lots of prime then add bio bacteria and let it sit for another day the gravel would probably be fine to use. Or just buy clean gravel.

    Hey brother thank you for recommending this video so a couple of questions how did you mount your led light higher and will they eat my Anubis plants

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  Před 6 lety +1

      Ok so first, they usually don’t eat plants, they like to rip them out and put them all over the place. Redecorating I call it and second, I have a cabinet that is above the tank and I mounted it to that. This tank is a bit small for them so I moved them up to a 110 gallon I had. But same thing just bigger. Oscars usually do better in tanks that are just for them. Bare bottom or not and with lots of room so dont worry about an aquascape for them they will just tare it up anyways lol. I also have a video called “how to restore an Aquarium” and it shows them in their current home at the end. That’s how I like to keep oscars. I hope this helps you man! Good luck as always!!!!

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  Před 7 lety +1

      Aqua Oscarman its mostly luck, and personalities differ from fish to fish especially with oscars. My oscars don't really like each other it seems like but they tolerate every other fish they have been with. Although when they spawn they try and kill everything haha. Also it depends on when the fish are added to the tank. It's always a good idea to put the smallest fish in first and the big mean ones in last. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  Před 7 lety

      Lets Get It Fitness A.K.A Bigjayinga yeah it does get pretty warm in the summer but I use a fan to circulate the air and even if the water comes up to 80 or more degrees, most fish can handle it. Also a garage is usually a good place for tanks because typically they have concrete floors and are typically out of the sun. Good luck!

    I never reuse gravel. I might throw some in a mesh bag and drop it in the aquarium to help jump start the biological. I am even leary of that I make sure the tank with the gravel I am using the fish are all healthy. I am just leary of reusing things in a new tank without bleaching them. I just don't think the chance of spreading a dormant disease in a new tank is worth saving a few bucks over the long haul. Most of my tanks have been set up for years so the expense of new gravel is really minor over the long haul.

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  Před 7 lety

      Todd Hayslett yeah I hear you on that, it's just not worth it. I learned that the hard way obviously. Thanks for the input. Way too much money in fish and time to chance it on some old gravel. Thanks for watching!

    • @toddhayslett8269
      @toddhayslett8269 Před 7 lety +1

      Exactly. My last new tank setup was a 65 gallon and I used 40 pounds of gravel. Cost me $40 dollars or so. The tank has been setup for around 5 years now. So 5x365 days =1825 day $40 divided by 1825= 2 cents per day. Compared to fish and chemicals and electricity to run the tank the grave cost is minimal.

    Jesus my dude you didn’t wash that gravel very well, that’s probably why the fish weren’t very happy, I filled my 5 gal bucket half way with rock and filled about 75% and washed by hand and dumped out, repeated until water was clear and my tanks didn’t get murky at all

      Ryan Heard yeah yeah, they were perfectly fine in there since I changed the water every other day and fed them a nutrient rich custom diet. They eventually moved into a 240 gallon tank anyways. Plus they were small at that time and were only in there for about 2 months. I do appreciate the the time it took to tell me what you think you know. Always love that, not to mention 10 other people that don’t have a channel or videos of their fish saying the same thing. Good stuff
