    The reason you have so much algae is because you have a clear pot inside a clear pot. The outer pot needs to be opaque to stop the light. If there is too much algae it steals the nutrients from the plant. If the roots are too covered in algae, it will destroy the roots. I have a number of plants in pon in opaque cover pots & don't have a big algae problem. My plants are all under growlights because my house is dark. Hope this helps. 😊🤞

    I was speaking to the owner of an amazing tropical Nursery. Him and I got on the subject of using Pon as a medium. I told him I did not like the algae it was gross blah blah blah. He started to explain to me that as long as the plants have good airflow. The algae can be extremely beneficial to the plant. He said not only does it help provide natural nutrients (like in the wild) it can also act as a protector. I haven’t researched this information, just figured I would pass it on. 💛💚🧡

    • @aniliname
      @aniliname Před 2 lety

      Yes, I think it's particularly extreme in her case because her vessels are closed at the bottom. I have my plants in pon in clear orchid pots in a diy self-watering system with a wick and a glass vase/vessel. With the aeration at the base I really barely get algae and I have south-facing windows. I'll just get a little bit at the base on the side that's facing the window (and not even on all the plants) and that little bit can certainly be beneficial. It's just when it gets out of hand that it can rob the plants of oxygen and nutrients.

    Second comment- as your black velvet gets more mature it will stop losing so many leaves. When immature, they will lose a leaf each time a new one comes in, but that will pass.
    Please put your clear pots in an opaque pot to minimize your algae.

      I’d be keen to know as well because I’m currently rehabbing my ghost after doing the same lol. It was in soil for about a month, and then all of the sudden it started going down hill so fast. I had to chop off probably half the root system, and I eventually ended up putting it in perlite which it seems to be liking a lot better now. I’m wondering if it’s my own doing or if these guys are just sensitive to transferring potting media lol. My guess is the first option but I’d love to know how yours ends up doing!

    FYI: I use similar clear plastic cups, and have started using the top of an old dress sock to cover - guess you could call it a cover sock. They are stretchy and nylon and fit perfectly. Also, I've used an old cotton sports sock with the striping as a cover sock for one I have in a small glass jar. For my Syngonium 'Pink Spot' I have in LECA in a concave shaped glass vessel, I covered it with an old pair of stretchy jeans. I used the ankle part, measured up and cut. Actually looks kinda cool with the boho Syngonium in her curvy jeans.

    I’ve recently started using 2 cups for each plant. I get a pointy metal tool (bought one @ the dollar store in the craft section) hot with a lighter & poke holes all around the inside cup. I put the plant in pon in the cup & then put it inside the 2nd cup with the water reservoir. When I need to flush it, I just run water through it & put it back in the 2nd cup with fresh water. It has changed my Pon game & my plants are thriving now. I have really enjoyed using pon like this. Good luck!

    I love October and Halloween and I'm still not over the fact that it's over and I can't wait till this year. So those socks made me happy. October is just my favorite month.
    By the way, I have a black velvet and from what I understand the corms can only support a certain amount of leaves depending on how big it is. Mine atp can do 4. I think it might be getting bigger, so I think it might hang on to five this time. I make sure when a new leaf is out it never gets dried out and it gets fertilizer! That's in hopes that it doesn't suck the energy from the oldest leaves. Black velvets are sad because of that, but people sleep on them. The price is really going down & there literally is no plant that looks like that. It's beautiful and elegant looking I would say. I just wish they would hold on to leaves more.

    Unfortunately, foliar feeding doesn't work if it's done at night because the plant's stomata are closed. If you're afraid of burning your plants, my suggestion would be to do it right before or after lights off. :)

    My black velvet is thriving in her self watering pot with pon. I would highly suggest that!

    I think pon is great for building up root systems, but I personally find that my aroids do much better in a chunky soil mix overall. I get more, healthier leaves in their more "natural" mix.
