    Most of my portraits are shot with 50mm but Summicron 75mm portrait photos are probably more flattering. The Leica APO Summicron 75mm f2 lens focuses close so it is up there as the best Leica portrait lens especially for tighter headshots. If you are a Leica Wedding Photographer this 75mm lens is an excellent choice as it is great for detail photos too. I discuss the Voigtlander Heliar Classic 75mm f/1.8 lens and Leica Summarit-M 75mm f/2.5 lens as cheaper smaller alternatives to the Leica 75mm Summicron APO lens.

    I, like you, wondered why I bought a 75mm lens. I got it for reasonable price when buying my M10P. The lens is really a lovely glass. I have so far mainly used it in street photography and on some landscape excursions.

      Thanks! Good to hear you have the 75mm too! I've not really tried it for landscapes mainly because i'm using running or cycling if doing those photos so I tend to go for smaller lenses. I do love telephoto landscape shots though. Interesting to hear you use the 75mm for street too. I bet some other readings will note that too. :)

    This is my second time watching the video. I am getting back to using more of this lens on SL2. You are definitely spot on about its modern characteristics. I still prefer the 50 mm Summilux ASPH, so I am saving it for special occasions. I understand why you had sold it and kept the Summilux.

    Thanks for an interesting review. I've had the 75mm f2 for a few years now. I'm very happy with it. I find it's easy to carry round as it's not too heavy, pretty compact and gives that additional bit of 'reach' compared with the 50mm. I tend to use it for fairly close-up shots of flowers or nature, where I'm looking for sharp, detailed images, though I do use it for walking around the countryside and towns / villages (and places in London). Come to think about it, I've found that I'm using my 50mm a little less now, and using my 35mm summilux instead. That two-lens combination, 75 and 35, works pretty well for me.

      Thanks, great to hear you enjoy the 75mm APO too. Yes if I still shot more nature photography (that was my thing before getting into portraits) I would use the lens more. Top tip for you.. If you see my macro videos I mention and link a clip on macro filter that work on the 75mm APO (used to take the flower photo in this video). It's small to carry but lets you take super close ups of nature for when you need it. You may enjoy it. The 35/75 sounds a good combination.. I'm currently more 28/50 :)

      Matt Osborne yes, I've now had a look at that review, and commented there. Just to repeat here, that if I want to do some serious macro, I get the Nikon out (I have an earlier Nikon DSLR), or for nostalgic (!) reasons, my old F3 or F6. Not doing much in way of portraits (but definitely need something), but want something for longer throws in everything from street photography, some landscapes and a different POV for architecture. I bought the 75mm as lighter and more compact for carrying around, and the fact that the M11 gives me an easy 95mm with the 1.3 crop.

    Hi Matt. Thank you for share your thoughts so sincerely, once again.
    I ordered one brand-new 75 cron a week ago, and when I took the lens out of the box and turned the aperture ring, I noticed immediately that the ring was loose, making a weird noise when rotate it and if I hold it in the same position and twist, the ring moves on its axis, which should not happen at all.
    After this sad finding, I still attached the lens to the camera, and there was still one more flaw to note. When I turned the focus ring, passing approximately around 1.5m focusing distance, I noticed that something were rubbing against some internal component. This problem it´s easier to identify with the lens attached to the camera. When you go through the full focus scale in one movement you can feel it better, like a lack of lube in that section. Even my Voigtlander lenses with more than 10 years doesn´t have this behaviour compared to this brand-new Leica lens. I just can´t believe it.Definitely, something went wrong in the assembly of this lens.
    Matt, when you bought your sample, you noticed some of this issues?

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Před 4 lety

      Hi Nuno, i'm very sorry to hear the news. If it was used I would be upset but new, send it back! Leica needs to be 100% for the price tag. It sounds like it got through the loop but you found a bad copy. It shouldn't be like that. Let me know how you get on.

      @nunosantos8784 Před 4 lety

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Sorry Matt to come back again, but if you can put some light on this issue, will be appreciated. After I left the lens at the Leica Store, I was told that the fact the aperture ring is loose is normal, they even had another copy of the same lens and although it made slightly less play, the ring was also loose. I still don't think it's normal and is not pleasant at all. From my experience with other manual focusing lenses, none of them had a loose ring or made a noise when shaking them (this one almost rattles basically). Also from some Leica forums, some guy said that the Summarits have nice firm clicky aperture rings, with no play either rotationally or front to back. The Summicron by comparison is much looser, and very easy to turn accidentally. The Summilux is the worst of all, very loose, always getting turned by accident, with play both rotationally and front to back. My copy is similar to this last scenario, and even if Leica says that is normal, for me is not, and I can´t really understand why some copies are perfect in this regard and some are not. Please, can you let me know if your copies, especially the cron 75, when you shake it, the ring makes noise and also play front ot back? Thank you

    Your review ticked the same boxes for me..most expensive Leica lens I’d bought, and why use 75mm.
    Certainly the sharpest lens on my M9 etc, and excellent 3D rendering at about 2 metres for portraits. The lens was sold , as it wasn’t used that much, and , like you I prefer the older ‘Pre Asph’ lenses. However, I could not resist a good value 75mm F2.5 Summarit, which is a lovely lens, and again, just right if you hit the portrait sweet spot at about 2 - 2.5 metres.
    The Summarit was used a lot last year photographing cyclo-cross racing, and is a welcome lighter weight lens, particularly when trudging around muddy fields chasing muddy cyclists!

    Very well presented. LOL, this is another lens that I bought years ago, almost as soon as as it was introduced. I am a landscape photographer so absolute sharpness and maximum contrast was the priority. The lens is almost perfect @ F2 and perfect from F2.8 and I mean perfect. The combination of this lens and my M6 solidly mounted on a tripod with something like the now defunct Kodak Tech Pan 2415 is nothing short of mind blowing. Although, as you mentioned it is on the large side for a Leica M lens, it is still demnunitive compared to some of the modern monstrosities offered by Canon, Nikon or Sony. Fixed focal length lenses for mirrorless cameras that are almost as large and as heavy as a 70~200 for a DSLR, this is nuts. The 75mm Apo is very expensive but you do get what you pay for. Very nice overview. There is one, if I can call it so, flaw with this lens. The built in hood is too short. I mean, it's better to have it than not, but I guess the design didn't allow for a tad longer one. It would have been perfect that way. Why? Well, in certain conditions is flares a lot, you get that magenta ghosting and loss of contrast. However, when you're able to have direct light hitting the lens front it is marvelous. Let's say cloudy day, best lens ever :) I know, overstatement, but it is so sharp, and lots of micro contrast, yet the bokeh renders creamy.
    I have bought a screw in Heliopan lens hood, and that helps. The only problem is my lens is now as long as 135mm APO. :)

    Thanks Matt for the daily lens reviews. Did you do any comparison between the 75 and the 90 Apo-Summicron-Ms with regard to characteristics in image rendering? I remember reading about the Leica designer of the 50 and 75 ASPHs, Peter Karbe (?), saying the two lenses 50 and 75 are very similar in optical characters and the 50 Summilux ASPH being a true Apo design as well. As a fellow 50 Summilux ASPH owner, I went for the 90 Summicron ASPH instead with the rationale being 75mm as a focal length is too close for comfort with its 50 summilux sibling esp when the rendering is not that dissaimilar. I might in the future get a Voigtlander 21mm color skopar or a leica 21mm f2.8 to have somthing just a little wider than 28mm.

    Lux 75mm f1.4 should give better results for portraits no? Similar to the noctilux f1 rendering ;) Never tried the 75 f2 though. Also distortion wise, with Leica lenses, even 35mm pre-asph, there’s no distortion right? The only leica lens I know that is famous for its distortion is the lux pre-asph 50mm, but other than that all 35mm/50mm leica lenses are free of distortion (based on most reviews I’ve seen)

    Hi Matt! I shoot headshots - people of all ages. Do you find any of these lenses too sharp, say, for older folks? Sometimes Leica digital cameras don't seem to have as smooth of transitions in skin tones that other digital brands too - am I making that up, or do you think that is true too? Shooting an M9 now - but have consider a used CL and possibly a used SL since there is no longer much of a difference in price. I would have gone with the 50 SL, but it is soooooo sharp that I feel like it tears up people's faces.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks Daniel. Good to hear you still use the M9. The CMOS sensor is smoother anyway vs CCD so that will affect it. Suddenly all you images will look complete C**p! It took me I think 9 months to make presets to get me to like my M240 files/ CMOS files. As for lenses for sure some can be too sharp. Use old lenses if want a soft look. The APO is sharp BUT as the DOF is so shallow the eyes might be sharp and face OOF if that makes sense. The 90 Macro (see that video) is just tear your face off sharp.
