    I think the trick for me getting more comfortable at jumps was learning to be heavy through the feet on the transition and light (relaxed) with the arms/hands. If my arms were tense, I would sometimes end up off balance on the take off or potentially going dead sailor.

    Growing up all I did was bmx, just got into mountain biking this year. Haven’t rode a bike in the woods for almost 10 years so I’m kinda fine tuning myself on the bike again I can jump but im not as clean as I can remember. But oh yes I have gotten to much speed before over cleared jumps and definitely cased some jumps with not enough speed. The dead sailor you can use to your advantage if you can launch and pull that back end of the bike back up mid air you can really air the hell outta some jumps that way but definitely need some practice to pull that off.

I'm 51, raced XC x9 years, 2nd season new to ENDURO. Never broke a bone in all my years and spills. Well, it happened on my first run, got to confident used poor technique on table top (I cleared several before this one) and paid dearly. GOPRO on handlebar showed I was squatting when I took off, and there went front end, straight into ground. I am 6'4" 205 pounds, drooped from ~10 feet. FF bell MIPS saved my head and face, took several injuries besides the big break. I will be back, better and wiser. I guess after all these years, I finally got bit.

  • @JubeProductions
    @JubeProductions Před 2 lety

    I've been riding some sort of bike for the better part of 40 years and I've been riding and racing mountain bikes since 1988. If it's one thing I've learned it's jumping is easy, it's the landing that is hard, but when done correctly, jumping is one of the best feelings on a mountain bike. I like jumping and I can jump when I have to, but I'm not considered a "jumper". I don't like riding my DH bike down the huge jump line, I'd rather blast down a steep rock garden on a tight line. But I do enjoy the wooden kicker, a table top or a gap jump here and there. One of the hardest parts of jumping for me is getting the take-off right, because if that doesn't go well, the rest of the jump is doomed. When it goes wrong for me, it's when I am not balanced over the lip and I lean to one side, or I am too far back or forwards. Jumping is like any other skill in riding, the more you do it, the better you get. There is no amount of instructional videos you can watch that will replace experience. Videos like this are great for getting an understanding on what to expect and what the mechanics of jumping are, but you really just need to take what you learn here and practice it over and over until it becomes natural. Thankfully there are people like this that make videos so that you can learn the basics.

  • @ianfurqueron5850
    @ianfurqueron5850 Před 2 lety +7

    I disagree a little about the dead sailor. In my experience it is more freezing upon take-off and not doing anything at all, thus arcing over the jump, landing front wheel first, and likely going OTB - worst feeling ever... Sometimes I've dead-sailored after pulling up too much, which often results in landing off-kilter and crashing off to the side of the trail. That's not fun either.

    • @andywright1634

    Sadly that was my last day at the jumps as the following weekend I broke my wrist/hand, it'll be a few more months and more surgery before I can ride at all and maybe not ever to the same level through lack of mobility and pain.

    I struggle with landing technique, or rather, deciding how to land on a per-jump basis. I favour touching down on the rear wheel more often because it's easier to control, but I keep buckling wheels and can't get as much air this way. How do I practice landing on both wheels, or on the front wheel, without going OTB?

    • @rick4677
      @rick4677 Před 2 lety

      just practice leaning forward a little bit more bit by bit in the air until you find a balance that will allow you to land with both wheels also make sure you have the right speed as often to clear it landing back wheel heavy you need to go faster so when you’re landing with both wheels you may have so slow it down a bit. also remember that you can land with you front wheel first without going over the bars so you don’t really have to stress about it and you should be alright

    I’m struggling to bunnyhop off a takeoff. I can do bunnyhops, so I guess I’m just scared. I think.
