The SR-71 couldn't outrun an surface-to-air missile in terms of pure speed. The reason it could seem to though, is because the missile had to chase the plane AND climb to meet its altitude, effectively taking the hypotenuse, meaning that the missile couldn't hit the SR-71 because it couldn't beat the geometry of the situation.

Also, a plane can't be faster than its own bullets as the speed of the bullets is relative to the speed of the plane 🤦🏻♂️
@@riccardosartori3822 While this is true at the moment a bullet (a shell being the more accurate term in this case) leaves the muzzle of the aircraft's gun or cannon, it *immediately* begins to slow down. This is called muzzle velocity, and is the fastest the bullet will ever go.
The bullets slowed down, and the aircraft caught up.
I will also add that the aircraft was in a climb when this happened, so gravity didn't help anything.

We have an Air Force Base in my town. It's mainly a R&D facility with a wind tunnel, but every so often, a fighter goes over. Obviously planes go over all the time, but a fighter is a rarity, but there is no mistaking the difference. The fighters are MUCH louder.
We also have a airbase close to my home so every week i get to see f eighteens fly over my house

@@josephreed437 well I'll do ya the favor. They use the wrong images for jets, for example when they where talking about the F-15 they used an F-18 hornet. The F-22 is not the only jet to supercruise, not even the first; that title belongs to the English lightning and the Concorde. Then well they highlight the F-22 for being fifth Gen. It was the first however now a lot more countries have developed their own like Russian Pak Fa and Chinas J-20. Tbh these are more stealth than 5th Gen as most experts agree that 5th Gen is more about sensor fusion of which countries haven't developed. Also the X-1, X-15 and SR-71 aren't fighter jets. The SR-71 is an amazing jet, the fastest that we know of but it's job was covert surveillance. It had amazing surveillance but enemies could detect it just not shoot it down so not great for diplomatic relations etc...

That's not how physics works.
Edit : I can see now how the portion I took from that made this comment confusing. Lets look at the whole statement : "Due to its HIGH SPEED, an F11 shot itself, because it was faster than its own bullets." This was not the result of high speed, it was primarily the result of rapid acceleration, which are two very different things. (the aircraft fired its afterburners, and the the bullet slowed down, due to wind resistance)

@@deadtomorrow789 I can't say it didn't, but a projectile fired from an aircraft will leave the weapon at least at the speed the aircraft is traveling. So either the aircraft accelerated greatly after firing the rounds, or the rounds experienced a large amount of drag, slowing them down. I just doubt the top speed of the aircraft was the primary factor.

@@thelonecabbage7834 It's true but not exactly how described. The jet was firing the gun while also decreasing it's angle. The rounds it fired decelerated and fell, but the pilot had managed to inadvertently descend just the right amount to fly through the rounds it had fired shortly before. You can look it up and someone will be able to describe it better.

The YF-12 is the intercept fighter variant of the SR-71 it was never brought to production. The "SR" also stands for Surveillance Reconnaissance.
The X-15, per its name was and eXperimental aircraft A rocket plane whose goal was to reach orbit. not develop a fighter plane.
I think during reentry the Space shuttle was moving about 4 times faster than any X-15 ever flew. I'm pretty sure the title of fastest plane belongs to the SR71.
Missing fact. Once the MIG 31 Foxhound was operational, no SR-71 ever flew into Soviet airspace ever again.
Not really. We just have non-official statements from Soviet pilots who made such claims, and the claims date to them intercepting the Sr-71 over Soviet airspace in 1986, meaning 5 whole years after the introduction of the MiG-31.
It wasn't a Mig 31 that was after it was a mig-25 foxbat which did Mach 3.4
Enrique Navajo actually no SR-71 EVER flew into Soviet airspace, just around the edge so as to avoid another catastrophe like when the U-2 was shot down.

A MiG-31 once managed to get a good track within envelope, was requesting permission for launch, but as the SR-71 was exiting the airspace, they did not want to risk.
@@19Koty96 I'm not sure this is right. A mig 25 did get a lock on a couple of occasions. But they were only on the edge of soviet airspace (from the altitude you could still photograph military installations deep inside the country), and that is why they didn't dare to shoot it down. But getting a lock and actually being able to intercept or shoot down is a different story. MIG 25 and it's replacement MIG 31 could only maintain those speeds for a very short time, which still made interceptions extremely difficult.

I wouldn't say biased but that it doesn't give you the full story.
I do think the US is ahead in aviation technology but a lot of the credit wasn't given. For example a lot of jets now can supercruise, but we weren't even the first. The Concorde and English lightning where the first. We had the 5th Gen first but now so does China and Russia and a lot more countries are trying to develop their own. The SR-71 is the fastest jet that we know off, but the point of it was covert surveillance, it did do a good job of surveillance but it was detectable just that you couldn't shoot it down. So yeah the video is US biased as it doesn't give you the full story.

"Leading distributor of Mig parts" - in reality the Vietnamese downed 4 American aircraft for every loss they sustained in aerial combat, and the F-4 fared poorly in the service of other countries like Iran too.
@@mortarriding3913 Most F-4s lost by the US navy during the war weren't due to Migs, as only 7 were shot down by them. The rest were lost to SAMs and mostly AAA fire.
Meanwhile the Migs were far less capable than the Phantoms with the exception of the Fishbed which was lighter and still quite fast unlike the Mig-17 and 19. Dofights were a rarity anyways with most of the action being between air and ground targets.
Iran made good use of their Phantoms against the Iraqis with minimal losses. By the time they lost some F4s their adversaries were using the new and vastly superior F-15.
@@mortarriding3913 During Vietnam the USAF F-4s scored a 3:1 ratio against MiGs and the USN F-4s scored 5.7:1. It was an exceptional aircraft for it's time.

Personally, the Sukhoi SU-57 and SU-33/35 models are my favorite aircraft. I’d love to go to an air show one day where the main aircraft of a few nations could fly in formation, it’s cool to me that there’s such diverse designs throughout the world (even though this video uses incorrect models for most of its featured models) or aircraft flying with their unofficial rivals, like an F-15c Eagle with a MiG-29a Falcrum.
I know there would probably be an unreal amount of headache setting something like that up between nations. But it sounds like a cool idea, like a few versions of VTOL craft taking off together like the AV-8b, F-35, Yak-38 ect.
Also a B-1b with a Tu-160 would also be cool to see

You wouldn't like the Su57 and Su33/35 if you were the pilot that had to fly them against F22's and F35's though, along with flights of other legacy A/C used as missile/bomb trucks for them. You'd have to greatly increase your hazardous duty pay....

I have a lot of pictures of the Sr71 Blackbird and others from a field trip I went to in 8th grade. It was in U.S. Dryden AF Base in the California desert. When I went they had a museum and a lot of retired planes. We couldn't take pictures of some of the newer planes that they we're testing on the run way.
The F-22's top speed is 1498mph, and yes it can supercruise like most jet's, but it can't supercruise to its top speed, only about Mach 1.4 to 1.6.

It's very likely that the first one to fly beyond the speed of sound was actually George Welch as a f-86 saber while he was a test pilot for the North American Corporation. Even before that it's possible that Luftwaffe Pilots broke the sound barrier inadvertently in the Me 262

The f11 didn't shoot itself down because of its own speed. The f11 was shooting couple of rounds off while inclining it's nose, then immediately entered a dive after which the bullet hit him, not the same as the plane being too fast
