Little known fact. The A-10 Thunderbolt was named after the P-47 Thunderbolt, which also developed a reputation for basically being a flying tank
Also the Sturmovik IL-2 was named the flying tank from ww2
Yes the p47 was nicknamed the Flying tank
The IL2 took that name from it
Also the nicknamed given to the p47
was Jug. Flyingtank due to its ordnance
Hence why the plane was designated Thunderbolt II
The p47 was made to fit its engine just like its ancestor the a-10 is made to fit its gun
thunderbolt II is the correct name i think

I'm an A-10 technician and work on these everyday. The issue is that since we are no longer fighting in the middle east, the A-10 is no longer assigned a mission. The Air Force has also unfortunately been trying for years to get rid of it to free up money to continue modernizing the F-35 which will eventually replace the A-10 even though it has nowhere near the same capability. The Air Force has done this in the form of cutting contracts that make A-10 parts. When parts go bad, there's very little to go around now so it's become increasingly harder and harder to maintain them. Some of them are just being sent to the boneyard because they need new wings but we don't have any more wings to replace them. If I had to guess, all of these will be gone by 2030. They're slowly getting retired one by one.
Until we suddenly need it again. I seem to recall the Air Force being incredibly confident that missiles made the guncannon irrelevant, and everyone bought into that infallible, logical thinking with the F4 Phantom. The F-35 is questionably average at everything it does, but it's advanced and technological so that by perception makes assume its effectiveness. Militaries do this kind of stuff all the time, and of course our generation would so fittingly consider ourselves above repeating the pattern...just like all of the other people who've repeated such logic
@@jjhh320 missiles in the late 60-early 70s are far less advanced than missiles of today. Today missiles are more reliable than back then and more agile. Guns are mostly useless on modern fighters. The dogfight is dead and the missile reigns supreme.
In a war I'd want the reassurance of being supported by a sturdy and reliable aircraft over a high tech jack of all trades that might not even want to start if the computer decides it doesn't want to accept the pilot's password.
If the F-35;s computer decides to say "No", it's literally a _very_ expensive paperweight, oh, and target practice for an enemy fighter-bomber in a war! It's why I think retiring the Tornado was a dumb idea, the Tornado, like the A-10, was a master of ground attacking.
How absolutely shortsighted we (some of us) are.
@@sakkra93 the full saying is jack of all trades master of none, better than a master of one. The A10 is an unreliable pos of an aircraft. Itâs upgrade to make it semi competent costs more per unit than a new F35. The F35 is good. A10 is questionable on if it was ever good in the first place
4:25 The gau auto cannon is actually mounted off center, but the firing position of the gau is center line. It is also angled downwards so it can fire at ground targets while flying level to the horizon.

The P-47 Thunderbolt was the original Thunderbolt, which was often nicknamed the "Jug", because of the appearance and because of the survivability. The Thunderbolt was usually used to bomb things, as it could fit three big bombs on it, and even free-fire rockets. Due to this, when the A-10 came around, and was made into a powerful, tough attacker, it was named the Thunderbolt II, to commemorate the original CAS plane of the USM.

The A-10 is my favorite plane in our arsenal. However, it is most definitely not invincible. This plane is almost always escorted by fighter Jets because it is a sitting duck for enemy SAMs. It is great at dog fights and absorbing bullets/shells. However, I canât see it absorbing a stinger or tomahawk. They excel at taking out enemy tanks because enemy tanks are also slow to target and slow to move. I mean I wouldn't say the ENTIRE length. You still have the apu, hydro system, and ecs pack. But a good bit yeah. Stops about right before the wings.
Uh, it's not invinvible though, estimates were that, if the cold war went hot, each A-10 Thunderbolt II would survive about two sorties on average. It's entirely vulnerable to any half-modern SAM system.
No, because it has flares genius. They can shoot missiles at it all day, the IR flares distract them from the plane.
@@theschmedaparadox1018 again, they were expected to be wiped out within weeks if the cold war went hot.
I never knew they flew that slow. Great video!!!
Lazerpig would like to challenge this claim
Once again the infographics show displays a gun firing the whole bullet: casing and all. More bullet per bullet I guess
I flew one of these during the Civil War. It was awesome.
what
Great content! Fun to watch. Slight correction if I may, you say it has surface to air missiles when I believe you meant air to ground. Don't know if it's editable after posting but figured I'd point it out
I would like to direct you to Lazerpig's videos on the A-10
this thing is literally a one man army in the air
The pilot is the real life Iron Man
One man army in the air
Needs a heavily sanitised airspace to have a decent survival chance
When you destroy one of it's engines, put giant bullet holes in it's side, and are twice as fast yet it still kills you.
I'll say. If you put bullets in the side and it only affects the structural exterior panels you're gucci. But it it hits a major component thats on the side such as a circuit breaker panel or a hydro line or even a flight control chord youre going down quick
I love this plan. It's a beast of a weapon.
When it whistles ,goosebumps overwhelm.Fear and Respect for A-10
Hereâs why the A-10 is invincible: BRRRRRRRRRT! Thatâs why.
No more tank.
âMost like the A-10 for itâs cheapness and durability.â
The rest of us: âAh hahaha A-10 go BRRRRRRT.â
but its not cheap
the most beautiful sound you can hear on the battlefield because you know whatever danger there was, it aint there anymore.
I love your channel keep up the great stuff
I love the warthog and it's wonderful capabilities but this video hyped her up to more than it is. Many of the comments will tell you that. This video was definitely had some misses. When making videos like this try to ask some of the pilots/crew chiefs for extra info.
I always saw this channel more like a propaganda studio for the US/western nations, I don't know why, it just gives me this feeling, maybe this video is one of those "USA #1" type, I am not hating on the channel tho
@@th3kgbdog385 yeah i got that vibe too
@@th3kgbdog385 indeed, very biased videos with lots of overestimated data
The A-10 Warthog is an angel of death
to British troops
@@th3kgbdog385 it def is, its a bad channel but its funny to watch sometimes

Surface TO air?
It's the opposite, Air to surface missiles or Air to ground missiles
Imagine seeing the A-10 WARTHOG and the AC-130 together on a rampage.
This is my most favorite plane. Not only because of the sound the turret makes, but the speed and the look of the plane also.
