- On this week’s episode of the Escape Your Limits Podcast, our guest was the science editor of Muscle and Fitness magazine, an editor-at-large for Flex magazine, and a regular contributor to Ironman magazine for 28 years. Jerry Brainum's articles were the only articles read in bodybuilding magazines by 3-time Mr. Olympia champion, Frank Zane. He is the creator of Applied Metabolics, an in-depth newsletter about food supplements; exercise science; steroids, and much more.
Besides his writing, he has been a nutrition consultant for numerous elite, world-class athletes such as Floyd Mayweather Jr, Oscar de La Hoya, and Vassiliy Jirov. He was also a competitive bodybuilder himself and trained alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger at the original Gold’s gym in Venice, California in the 70s.
Today, he spills nothing but the truth about:
• The biggest mistakes most bodybuilders make
• The myths, truths, pros, and cons of steroids
• And how a lot of safe supplements can have deathly effects

This guy is the yoda of bodybuilding, tremendous knowledge and experience
Never knew about him and I’ve been training and competing since 1992. I’ve listened and studied all the experts. This gentleman is very educated and refreshingly honest 🙏❤️
Trained with Arnold. Science editor of Muscle and Fitness magazine for 10 years; editor-at-large at Flex magazine for 8 years. Written for Men’s Fitness magazine; Sports Fitness magazine; Muscular Development magazine; Muscle Mag International, and a regular contributor to Ironman magazine for 28 years
@@MrRaitzi Muscle & Fitness mags were a good read back in the 1990s. Jerry Brainum comes across very knowledgeable.
This man knows his stuff it comes natural on his knowledge that he is naturally educated on everything .. He will break it down n knows the history in everything no second guessing he knows his shit 💯💯
More Jerry please...thank you for posting. Peace, Sal
this guy is great. his honesty is refreshing.
Jerry is still one of the biggest references
Love it to listen To Jerry simplifying down nutrition and sport science
Thank u very very much. High quality content and both really nice human beings and nice to listen to 🎉🎉🎉
I've been watching Jerry's channel for years, really happy seeing him getting big screen time on bigger fitness chanells.
Thank you very much ,veryinteresting intrview and great advice!
The quality of all these videos is excellent
This Jeff Brainum guy is a gold mine of information
I follow everything this guys says. He’s so knowledgeable about the science of building muscle.
He looks out of shape.
for me there is a limit of stomach acid and digestive enzymes. this is the reason why i get too tired and hunger is coming too soon again.
after taking betaine hcl + pepsin, the protein is getting broken down in amino acids better in my case and these amino acids then get absorbed and result in lowering hunger as they should.
Very knowledgeable person. All said all the facts.
What are your recommendations for the best isolate whey protein?
As a teenager in the late 80’s , guys in gym were taking egg protein powder and then Joe Weider protein became big . I asked old time strong man about the powders and he said just drink milk .
Drink milk for what? If you are looking for protein you would need to drink a few gallons a day...secondly milk isn't for humans.
I was in the martial arts 15 years ago. Brutal training. Nobody ate protein in powders.
Protien powders are just fast and convenient. Nothing more nothing less. It's not a steroid that's gonna make you grow over night. It's just another way to meet your Protien requirements.
Protein powder doesnt do anything absolutely nothing .
Its heated at high temperatures which destroys whatever milk protein it had and you end up with a platic tub of powder with no nutritional value .
Its the biggest bodybuilding supplement scam and people are still falling for it 😒
@@bobdobric6787 lmao. Good one.
Now this was very informative! ***checks all my containers of protein*****
wondeful information!!!!
Thank you!
Just checked my protein jug and down at the bottom it says “We do not amino spike”. Learn something new everyday day
Informative video clip 💡
Glad you liked it!
What are the whey protein powders that don’t contain the added amino acid’s? Is MyProtein or Bulk powders any good?
That’s fascinating
Thank you
That's why I used Sam Busas super protein which was simply casein
So uhm... How do we know if the whey is pure? Just by buying ISO Whey? Is there a certain amino acid profile I should go for?
Jarry is just amazing huge fans long time ago
As a hardgainer I take amino acids pre workout and pre meals. My muscles really don’t get much bigger ever but their output does increase almost on a regular basis.
Wow informative
Designer Whey Protein was the best of the best back in the day.
I love this guy!!!
I was just about to buy my first tub of protein powder, im so glad i watched this first because i was about to buy one with the amino acids, well sir.
Protein is amino acids 😂
Anyone got a quality brand of whey they can recommend please
As far as protein that can be taken in for a person for each meal has to vary... All people are different sizes and some just lay around while other bust ass 24/7...makes no sense that all adults can only digest 30 grams of protein per meal... bigger guys that workout and work harder need more protein to stay strong and fit....
Joe Weiders protein was incredibly tasty, and Mega mass 2000. That stuff was addictive !
Is liquid aminos good?
I take the main 5 Amino acids, Creatine and a good multivitamin daily. I'm 66 and in excellent health; fit and loaded with energy. I've been a fan of vitamins my whole life,
and I firmly believe in them.
I still like and want the natural flavorless Nitro whey
Where is the full interview video or is this it?

@@EscapeFitness thanks!
CFM or 100% hydrolyzed fractions 💪
Straight nitro whey nothing added is best
I love how he just went totally off track explaining the entire history of whey protein supplements
I just tried mixing vanilla protein powder with heavy cream. Took one sip and poured to disgusting mess out!
who knew the story of Whey protein could be so fascinating
😄 ha, ye.
Little ms muffet must of been jacked! 😆
I hope you guys will answer my earlier question...
I wouldn’t agree that it’s “irrelevant” where you get your protein. Protein quality matters.
Very much agreed, where you get your protein from and the quality could be one of the most important factors, this is the problem when he and others simply lump everything into one category of Protein.
High quality animal based protein, otherwise called meat, especially red meat is not the same thing as someone consuming Greek yogurt and hummus but still pointing out that both are "Protein", people who really want to focus on protein quality need to focus on high quality animal meat.
Sorry for you if you don't get what he meant. Pretty much everyone who knows him understands what he meant.
@@LGTVQHD I’m sorry about your face.

isnt the purpose of cardio to burn bodyfat? so why take aminos if the body will just use them during cardio?
For heart health I think.
To get low bodyfat is being good at your intake of food.
There is a limit of how much protein will be used to build muscle. Depending on carb intake some protein will be used for energy and the rest can be stored as fat. If it's been wasted off in the urine that can be problematic.
How can protein be stored as fat?? Protein and fat are too completely different molecules. That's like saying you can store oranges as apples.
@@walden6272And carbohydrate isn't a different molecule? Too much Carbohydrate can be stored as fat. The idea is that carbs as well as protein cause the production of insulin. However I am happy you challenged my comment because I've found that there are no studies to support my theory. It has been stated that excess protein can be stored as fat but that probably isn't true. If someone is totally inactive ingesting 5x their body weight then maybe but then again maybe not.
@@Jeffthedude15 Just do your research on this topic, why protein cannot transform into fat. Yes carbohydrate can become fat, they are similar in constructions. Fat is stored energy and carbohydrate is energy.
@@walden6272 I should research macros on a molecular level if that is what you mean. What I'm stuck on I guess is how the body responds to each. If you're not getting enough of either carbs or fat for energy the human body will use protein as an energy source which degrades it's use in protein synthesis.
@@Jeffthedude15 You're going off on the wrong topic there. The topic was can protein be converted to fat. And the answer is NO. No matter how much protein you consume, it will not convert to body fat (scientifically impossible). That is why when survivalists who can only eat rabbits, still continue to lose weight despite how much they eat. If your body only consume protein, you will still starve to death. When your body breaks down its own muscles protein, it just a sign of starvation, it doesn't really help the body.
nice to see jerry brainum in a decent setting other than his cave
Hahaha
Hold on, "Some scientist along the way discovered whey, and whey goes way back", and then there's a Jon Jon Park look alike sitting in the background. You guys are having too much fun.
Jerry eats scientific white papers for fun , he knows every double blind study and trial ever done as a hobby , he has forgotten more than most will ever know , amazing guy
If your having Kidney issues it’s best to avoid all that protein.
Excess protein can diminish kidney function.
If the man in the blue shirt thinks he knows so much, then why do i think he looks unhealthy and unathletic?
For me that's not a contradiction, but that's just my opinion...
Anything i get from *natural* foods is enough for me.
Nothing artificial goes into my body!
I try to avoid RoungUp too.
Taking supplemental protein regularly is expensive
Im sure youve heard this before but you look uncannily like lance armstrong
If you do a deep dive of molecular biology you will find that you can grow muscle with enough amino acids to sustain life. That’s not a huge amount of protein.
The 32g myth was started by Bill Philips to sell his product "myoplex" back in the 90s.
Why was the cap at 32 mg?
@@daytonasayswhat9333 To basically say eating a big steak was useless past the 32g of protein limit, basically bringing in the importance of protein shakes because getting 200g of protein was impossible without!.. Obviously the old school bodybuilder never took shakes because they ate big steaks!
@@daytonasayswhat9333 Philips misrepresented the study mr. Brainum spoke of to sell his myoplex product. It had exactly 32g. Of protein. Then if you tell a lie long enough,it becomes "percieved knowledge" amongst casual gym goers.
@@handsforwarrodneymorgan2616 why market it with 32 g of protein? Why not just market it with 64 g and sell it for twice the price? I don’t really understand what trick is trying to be pulled here.
@@daytonasayswhat9333
So you will need to drink 3 to 4 of these drinks daily. They sold them in 20 serving boxes for $40.
So most gym bros bought a box a week. Simple marketing and math. More money, more money, more money.
Excess will be stored as fat
If you take aminoasset before Træning you miss you straight
*And that explains how I got massive from learning how to create my own protein shake over the powdered synthetics!* _People really don't get how extremely easy it is to make your own 100% all natural protein shake with all natural ingredients!_
No. Obviously.
Eat steak and eggs, and be done with it!!!
buy hormone free protein powder bypass all the nonsense spoke about.
Hell know... 3 good meals per day ... maybe 4 if you are really active
You don’t rly need protein powder if you consume a fair amount of protein in your daily life, that’s good eblugh
Lol this guy stuck in 1980
This guy know nothing
He is loosing it... and preaching old and outdated information. He stopped learning the day he thought there was "nobody else with more experience and knowledge" than him.
I disagree about Jerry, he is very well written and informed
None of us big guys use protein powder! We all eat real food and a lot of it and not something out of a container!
👍
Jerry was wrong about how many grams of protein to take per LB of body weight 🤦🏻♂️
I saw Vegan Gains post the research in 1 of his videos. It’s a HALF gram of protein per lb of body weight.
Steroid body builders say to take 1 gram of protein per lb of body weight.
You’re welcome
That’s not what he said . He said ,”1.2 -2.2 grams per kilogram of body weight “
So the lower end of this scale (the 1.2 grams per kilo) is around half a gram per pound (maybe slightly over by a bawhair )
You’re welcome
