Marty's troubles are a combination of Bungie screwing him over and interacting with some of the stupidest people online.
He was one of the first people to notice Activisions bad influence on Bungie and immediately voiced his worries. AND HE WAS RIGHT.
The guy has and always will have my greatest respect for his work.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I lost my respect and fondness for bungie as the company it became and is today not long after they had fired marty. I've always had respect for Marty and always viewed him as a cool dude he had a legitimate passion for what he does. And the toxic corporate overlords of the video game industry are trying to make him out as a pariah. Just blows my mind mind that some stupid people are siding with the likes of bungie, Activision etc.

I will always believe the artist owns what they create. I am disgusted when publishers or companies try to strong arm ownership of art created for their IPs
That's how copyright works. He knew this when he made the music.
@@ThisHandleSystemCanGetNicked There's finer, complicated and more unfair details regarding the law when you're a music composer. You shouldn't just asume "he knew" and trust the dudes in suits blindly.
they do if they created it on their own and publish it themselves, actually it is more correct to say the company owns the right to use it. for this work he was contracted to do and paid for, it is the artist's work but the company has the exclusive right to use and sell it. imagine if any artists made a song or music for a movie or advertisement that symbolise that product, was paid and given resources to make it, then turn around and sells the same music to everyone else to use in their movie or advertisements. same if a game developer copies the assets they helped create from their previous games including unfinished ones and sells it to another company, you would have 50 Halo knockoffs out before the original one even gets released.
That's why they call it intellectual property: because you thought it up and you made it, so you own it. All of the music Marty made is therefore his intellectual property, and anybody who argues against that has literally no understanding of that word.
@@AlayoAgua Such as? If you're making music for an IP, that company who owns the IP also owns the music made for it. This is standard practice, he knows that very well from his time working on other games. Halo would be a prime example considering MS took it from Bungie and also subsequently own the music, which is why they can freely use it for their other Halo-related products. If you're seriously arguing that Marty didn't know this, then no offence but he's too ignorant to be in this industry.
Also note that Marty said in his channel description that he wasn't going to monetize anything, which means that the monetized videos on his channel were monetized due to either that thing youtube did where it changed the monetization stuff around last year, or just oversight
Companies can also, all on their own, monetize and claim all the income from videos that the automated system flags. And we all know how horrendous CZcams's automated system is.

I think Marty did the right thing morally, but only having one man versus a large corporation with a vendetta against you was never going to end well for him. Marty and his personality seem destined to clash with the ever increasingly corporate structure of the games industry. The reason Bungie is so different now is because of Activision. Marty got fired because he began voicing out to the company that working with Activision was a bad idea. He saw everything that was going to happen. Along with the exodus of original bungie workers because the deal with Activision was bad, and now Bungie is no longer the same company it once was. Doubt
The only good point in Destiny 2's lifespan was its second year. I've sunk over 1800 hours into that heap of a game, and it's just gone downhill from there. PvP has always been awful in it due to the horrid sandbox, and the encroaching overmonetization is becoming unbearable. In the past you used to be able to earn holiday themed armor from eververse, now you have to buy it. The season pass model is just a nonstop fomo grab. They removed paid dlcs that people paid good money for, even the base game as well, and now they are removing the Forsaken dlc next February with only a slight compensation of in-game items that can be earned in half an hour for previous owners of Forsaken. There was no compensation at all when the base game and first two dlcs were deleted, meaning people who paid $140+ are unable to access what they paid for. We bought a game, not a season pass that will be removed at the end of season, and every single dlc we've gotten since the end of Forsaken has been lower and lower quality in terms of story and smaller in scope while preying on your wallet.
TLDR; It's just not worth getting invested into. Game will just remove what you like a couple years after you buy it and will nickel and dime you as much as possible.

It's sad really. I used to love destiny and bungie was my favorite developer. Spent a lot on merchandise back in the halo days. Now they won't see a red cent from me and their monetization they are shoving down our throats. Oh and paying for old content again?..........f-that

What happened? Didn’t he already make money off when he worked in it?
I think it's unfair to say Salvatori only now got appreciation because of this drama.
Make no mistake, Salvatori made his BEST work not with Marty. His best work wasn't Halo, not anymore. It's Destiny 2. Salvatori carried and STILL CARRIES that game and its expansions with his immensely beautiful OST. The fanbase collectively fauns over the Deep Stone Crypt ost.
Destiny 2 is to Salvatori, what Halo was to O'Donnel.
Destinys best music is still it’s 1.0 vanilla soundtrack and MOTS. Several of the channels that post mostly Destiny music make this argument all the time about Mike being more important than Marty and downplay his influence on the sound design in all Bungie games. Also Skye Lewin and C Paul Johnson are really the people who don’t get the credit they deserve for Destinys music.
@@BestintheWest25 They're not downplaying it at all. Don't get me wrong, the songs where Marty contributed were solid, but he's had literally zero involvement in D2, and that's when the OST peaked. Deep Stone Crypt, Journey, Beyond Light, Riven, etc. So many bangers, and none possible without Salvatori, and the other aforementioned contributers, of course.
People forget Destiny 2 isn't only Salvatori though. If anything Skye Lewin, Michael Sechrist, Josh Mosser, and Rotem Moav combined have done equally as much as Mike for D2 if not more. For example, Michael Sechrist wrote Deep Stone Lullaby. Not Salvatori.
This isn't a bash on Mike at all. He does a LOT for D2 don't get me wrong. But the other composers deserve credit too. No one is carrying anything by themselves.
Ya know what really pisses me off is people acting like there’s only 5 good osts in destiny, like I get that some of them are from more obscure areas/harder to access but for example saying journey was the ONLY good ost from vanilla is just ridiculous

I tried to give destiny a chance, but unfortunately the game doesn’t feel good at all, the grinding is frustrating and boring and the rest of is just feels off, I can say that warframe a game with free expansions is way WAY better than d2 and that’s a shame.
@@laughingatnothing4642 That's the problem. Everything hoodies in the endgame and usually requires a bunch of friends.
@@charlie8450 I play Warframe and D2 and Warframe is definitely not better. The grinding in Warframe is worse than D2 and equally as boring. The expansions are free sure, but unless it’s a major story expansion (which have been taking increasingly longer to come out) it’s mediocre at best. The best thing they’ve done in recent memory was the call of the tempestarii quest and it was less than an hour long. Not to mention the expansions are so extremely bug ridden.
The Bungie that created Halo was a respectable company. The Bungie that created Destiny means nothing to me.
Thank you for making a video about this. What's been happening to Marty is unforgivable and more CZcamsrs need to be talking about this. I love The Act Man and Hidden Xperia but it's so weird to me that they were so quick to have Marty on for interviews last year but now are totally silent on this. I hope they do bring this up soon because this needs to get out to their audience. Marty is responsible for so much of what made Halo great & important parts of our lives & childhoods. He needs our support now more than ever
It's shit they most likely don't understand and or don't want to get involved in god knows I would do the same
I thinks it’s more the fact that they alpha by heard about this situation yet. Other than that then I dunno
You told me Marty is working on 6 days in Falujia, I will now be buying 6 days in Falujia to support Marty
Who gives a damn whats legal anymore. The legal system is so vastly divorced from morality and what's right, it should be ignored in favor of common sense.
you always say the right things in these situations, nice video! I think the same about Salvatori, i always reminded people about his job but the sad thing is that we know nothing about him, that's why Marty also get a lot of respect from the community, he loves to talk about his decisions, his co-workers/ friends and about our generation too (he always talk about how we are the next generation of gaming design/ art, so i think that another reason why he is so vocal about fighting for your rights).
Salvatori is always so damn good with Destiny 2. I am really excited fpr his music in witch queen.
"Tell me who your enemies are, and I'll tell you who you are"
Marty's enemies are AAA game companies, lawyers, and redditors. Seems like a pretty upstanding guy to me.
they can sue him all they want, but they cant get music of the spheres from my hard drive
Got on youtube one day to show my friend a video of Marty playing the Halo 3 theme with his dog. Sad to find all the Halo content on his channel deleted :((
I think 343 should hire Martin to help make more halo music
I agree .. it will be a dream come true ..
I would kinda disagree i think Michel Salvatori's role in Halo's music is often not given that much credit. Marty was only part of the Halo music. If you have hear Salvatori's tracks from Destiny they are sooo damn good, so marty alone wont bring the music imo.
Yep. I think the composers for halo infinite are doing a good job, but they don't really have that original piece that the older games had with original yet iconic sound.
Thank you for making this video. After seeing that very Reddit thread and the various rabbit holes it led to, after I kept seeing comment after comment saying "I can't believe Marty is a terrible person" in no less vulgar terms and trying to find the actual sources for why he's so bad. Everything I found seemed to be not that bad, misconstrued, or misunderstood, seemingly intentionally? That seemed really strange to me that Halo fans wouldn't be biased towards the genius behind the music we're so fond of, and seemed to be unreasonably biased against him? It was so strange, until I found the place where politics entered the conversation. Basic, vanilla Repub takes like boycotting Gillette (have we forgotten how massive a movement that was at the time?) which are honestly the baseline for anyone of his age, but it all got blasted across the rooftops that he was alternative rite, and we all know politics are thicker than water. Thicker than our emotional connection to Halo's music, I guess? Saw alot of people saying "separate art from artist" which would be the correct take if he was truly a bad guy, and then alot of people trying to prop up Micheal Salvatori (which more power to the guy, he's always deserved credit for cowriting Halo's music) and kind of hide away Marty's contributions, and it all seems very reminiscent of what happened with Notch and Jeb a during that whole fiasco. I for one can't wait to hear what Marty cooks up for Fallujah.
PS: The whole deal with Marty directly contradicting his legal order from the court doesn't seem plausible to me at all as an indictment of his character. When they specifically say you may not post Music of the Spheres online and then he specifically does just that, it makes me think that either he didn't read/ignored/forgot that part of the terms or was such an idiot that he literally thought he could directly contradict them, and then advertise it on every one of his social media accounts, and they wouldn't find out. So either he was ignorant of the legal obligation or he's a total idiot.
He clearly stated that he didn't care, and he did it to show fans and disgust about work he's done and music in general.
@@tyrellmartin4406
He said he doesn’t care about the haters, but he cares about the fans.
He’s saying he cares about the people, not the company that fired him.
Marty is a legend, it’s slander what’s being said about him now
I’m never giving bungie a cent of my money ever again. Bungie has officially lived long enough to see itself become the villain
I would love to work with Marty on a symphonic metal album. Hell, I'd be cool with him telling me how it should go. He's an amazing composer and unlike what Reddit and such say, seems like an absolute great person
Even the very first time I watched the Halo 2 behind the scenes on the collector's edition dvd, I recognized *IMMEDIATELY* that they were joking with and about one another. Thank you so much for making this wonderful video, man. Mad respect.🤜🤛
The interaction Marty had with the halo community in the leading months was so incredibly exciting. I watched every interview and discussion for all the insight I could get into one of the greatest minds in game development. From everything I've seen, I could never buy the idea that he'd become 'the bad guy'. I just hope he knows there are still many of us who stand with him on this.
You mean the most creative video game visionary of the 21st century is actually a based king? Of course he was
Bungie and Activision turned out to be a lawful neutral, and Marty, a neutral good.
Thoroughly excellent breakdown, while I was aware of some aspects of this situation, I didn't know the whole story or all the ins & outs. I think not only does he deserve to be defended but that you did an excellent job of doing so. Kudos 👍
"Apparently Marty is Alt-right" In this climate that means he vaguly leans right. But real talk. The fact that he can't show off and explain how he makes the music HE WROTE is a detriment to the future of cinema and game music.
As of now you don't even need to lean vaguely right. Just step out of line on a single issue that has enough mania behind it and you've earned yourself a cancellation saga now.
@@ultraman5168thats how cults operate btw
How could anyone hate this man? He's one of the only AAA devs of the golden age who actually reach out to the small guys.
Literally the reason Halo became what it was, was the music and atmosphere and the two people responsible for that were both either fired or forced out of the company. Joseph Staten and Marty O’Donnell
I 100% believe Marty is hard to work with. Bungie had very strict, borderline unachievable deadlines for the majority of their time spent on Halo. This stress coupled with Marty's intense personality and his drive to perfect his work is bound to cause a bit of anger toward him. No amount of respect for him as a person, a co-worker or boss could override those feelings. That being said, this doesn't make him a bad person. Nor does this somehow mean he didn't create the music he wanted to share. While yes, he was technically wrong for going against the court ruling, it was an unfair and unjust ruling to protect a corporation. I don't care who it is, an act against a situation like that is commendable.
He may also be narcissistic as touched on in this video. I've definitely gotten the feeling that he thinks very highly of his abilities. He may not think that everything he creates is a masterpiece, but he is clearly aware of his great works and his impact on the communities surrounding his music. However, being confident and recognizing your own work also does not make you a bad person. While I don't enjoy some things he says here and there about himself in this conext or the attitude he has sometimes, it's important to look at his character objectively. Even if he does believe he is better than others, or at the very least believes he has created better things than others, he doesn't act on that in any way that matters that we know of publicly. Are we really going to damn a man for having a high opinion of himself when his entire career from 1999 to at least 2010 was cultural phenomenon after cultural phenomenon?
Personally I think it doesn't matter. Yes, he can be an asshole. Yes, he should probably treat some people with more respect. Yes, he did technically do something he wasn't supposed to. None of this means you can't enjoy his works or at the very least acknowledge that he had a hand in creating things that you enjoy. None of it makes him any worse of a person than just about anyone.
I think artists are allowed to be a little egotistic. They seem to be targeting for it most of the time
@@iya6998 That's kind of what I was trying to get at. Not that they should be, but it's understood that they usually are. The issue comes in when they act on it and treat people as if they're below them. I have yet to hear anyone genuinely speak bad about Marty outside of just being strict and high pressure under deadlines.
He also came to our University to work with students. A lovely man who gave generously of his time.
Damn those Rush quotes are so fitting!
Thanks for clarifying the situation. There have been way too many cancellations of artists, composers and game developers without real evidence due to social media upheaval over some corporate/company issues... usually people getting fired, leaving the studio they helped grow and make successful. The Marty situation was really weird, and hearing it starting as a Reddit issue kinda explains how pointless and stupid it is to "turn" on such a great artist. Especially when the grievances come from a lawsuit between a corporation and a dude who was withheld both stakes and the products of his work.
In terms of contribution Marty wasn't just a composer. He spent years in Bungie as Audio Director, he also supported writing and storytelling in Halo. I would guess he had the same role on Destiny. Him, Joe Staten, Jamie Griesemer, Marcus Letho, Paul Bertone, etc... all so influential in the development and success of Bungie, yet why did they leave Bungie during or after Destiny? Where they all as "bad" as Marty?
Yeah, I don't think so. My dream would be to see most of these Bungie veterans back working on some new IP, free of the videogame industry bs they had to go through. I just hate seeing legendary talent go to waste like this.
Leave it to Reddit to make a full fledged attack on somebody with no grasp on the person or their personal life. Gold chungus 100
I feel bad to have ever supported modern Bungie by purchasing and playing Destiny 2. Great memories, great world, great music, but, they are honestly quite an evil company. And this isn't just because of what they did to Marty. Their Eververse store and the way they treat their community has been baffling.
Before destiny they were the same.
Lied about gameplay of Halo 2 and Oni at E3 when pre orders were available.
And rushed for production.
Just shut up please.
@@ginopippofrebooter-ilrinne2881 Doesn't hurt to be a little nicer on the internet bud. Halo 2 was rushed to meet deadlines.
@@PlainOlSoapBar They did the same to Oni.
But here you are defending Bungie's time with Halo as a good fanboy.
They LIED presenting a gameplay which wasn't present in the final product and pre orders were on!
It's the same as Destiny 1 Vamilla.
I played Destiny 2 on the gamepass lol
@@ginopippofrebooter-ilrinne2881 ignore them people just don't want to admit
as someone who has a sea of work having worked for over 30 years I can guarantee Marty was simplly doing all he could to protect the music. In this situation you do all you can and I don't think some people will understand this. This work is his baby. Oh and to anyone thinking being tied to the music industry is in any way a good thing, snap yourself out of that mindset and go it alone
Marty's videos were very interesting and mostly explained his creative process and progression while composing the music, less than the music itself. It's truly a shame they forced him to take them off. I can't see how one would celebrate this.
Martin shared your video so Im pretty sure its gonna get a sizeable view bump. Excellent video btw really well put
Marty O'Donnell is a Legend. You obviously didn't know who he is until all of this came out about Bungie sueing him.
Did you even watch the video? He's being defended lol.
This is my favourite of all your videos. I love this man not because I hold him on some godly pedestal like some in the community try to insinuate but because I genuinely loved his music as a kid to the point the first CD I ever purchased was halo reach's OST. His music invoked such emotion it reached out to me as a very troubled child alongside the stories of heroism and stoicism, of greater good and meaning those games told to me. And then as an adult I have listed to him in many an interview, made a twitter to keep track of what him an other interesting people are doing and I can safely say hes not perfect, hes not some god, but he is a pretty wholesome guy who has a clear passion love and talent for his industry and fans and his worst offense that has gotten him so much grief is that hes honest open and stubborn. Traits I respect regardless of his work and something the entire world of corporations and deception sorely lacks. I love this man not because hes my all knowing messiah who's every word I grip but because hes simply a man trying to do good regardless of mine or anyone else's opinion. Goodness is always worth defending.
I had no idea that people were attacking Marty. That’s messed up man. Anyone who heeds the goose story is a good dude.
I thought his videos of how he created different Halo tracks were super cool🤧
You've lost the plot when you're siding with reddit mods and activision
Activision: He was fired because he didn't contribute anything.
Marty: OK. * Distributes his contributions *
Activision: Wait. That's illegal.
Here before it blows up

I don't care who you are, no one should be allowed to take, put a price on, or stake claim on someone else's imagination and creativity. What bungie did to Marty is so inexcusable, moral perspectives alone can see that. I'm sorry for him and I'm sorry for anyone who has been bullied by a company who has its goals set on sucking the life from creative and morally kind people. Maybe it's time the little guys to fight back. No one should be allowed to gang up on them for "legal" reasons. A person's interest shouldn't have to be backed up legally if their of morally kind character!
