    Ty been using this to install in my 2002 spyder. My kit didn't require changing shift shaft. Only thing is I wish you had done more video specifically on the wiring and ecu. About 2/3 complete now. Hope to have it running again in a few days

    Love the video bud, currently doing the same but not with the kit on a 95% complete MRS but I might need some help with a few things: The wiring sections, what to remove from the gearbox and is there a link for the clutch installation template?
    Oh, one more thing, did you replace the SMT ECU with a MT one or is it the same one already in the car? Thanks again for uploading the video!!

    Not only are the SMTs notoriously unreliable, but the oem fluid to refill the hydraulic system is over $150 a liter in most places. luckily at 190k miles mine is still kicking, but I'm doing this swap as soon as possible.

    Hi Dino (hope spelt your name right, else apologies) ,
    Many thanks for your video instruction with the most comprehensive steps, however.
    What is need to be done with the 3 holes that were left over once the SMT pump assembly has been removed?
    In this case, I guested, we just terminated or block them, right?
    Thanks again.

    • @carboydino
      @carboydino  Před měsícem

      If you are talking about the ones left over after removing a component, as long as they are not drain plugs or any type of structure piece that is needed everything will go exactly as you see it in the video.

  • @rotarygod

    my pump was leaking and weak , it took over 30 sec to stop pumping , also 2 of my position sensors fail , they are over $200 each , my smt fail on me 3 times(130k) , I was stuck on the traffic light 3 times, they are not reliable !
    i did the swap with my friend , it is not too hard to do, basic tools ,jack stand , drill will do the job , the kit from moneywrench included everything you need!

  • @WalkrXY
    @WalkrXY Před 8 měsíci +1

    So wait when you swap to manual shifting it's no longer up and down SMT motion? Is it possible just to change to manual clutch and still keep the paddle shifting?

    • @carboydino
      @carboydino  Před měsícem +1

      No the system will bug out and put you into safe mode second gear all the time

    • @WalkrXY
      @WalkrXY Před měsícem +1

      @carboydino ok so paddle shifters are no go. but if it isn't an up and down motion to change gears then it's not a sequential transmission

    • @carboydino
      @carboydino  Před měsícem

      You are absolutely correct It is not a sequential transmission. It is by all form and function a regular manual transmission. It has a solenoid that pushes the clutch in and another two shifts solenoids that move the shifter. The only thing that is up and down tap is your controls. I believe it is the most inefficient and ridiculous blend of automatic and manual transmission but thanks to them doing it this way you just have to change a couple of components and you can shift the exact same transmission yourself with h pattern because that's exactly what it is. A regular standard transmission.

    Why is there an SMT system? It’s sort of like electric windows, or power door locks, or power brakes, or electric antenna, or an automatic transmission. Sure you can do all those things manually, but people like the ease of use. The system is nice in stop and go traffic. Nice for folks that cannot drive a stick shift for whatever reason (including physical limitations). Furthermore, If you loan your Spyder to a punk teenager, they cannot burn up the clutch by doing full-throttle clutch dumps - the SMT system won’t let it happen! The system modulates the clutch flawlessly, and does perfect rev-matched downshifts every time. It even blips the throttle twice when downshifting into first. It’s simply another part of the car ... that may need maintenance or repair after 20 years. The system is not that hard to repair and maintain. (Even though Toyota quit supporting the entire system years ago). I do understand folks removing the system after it fails, and they are unable to get it repaired. It’s hard to find mechanics that will actually fix cars any more - most are only parts replacers. Removing the system because it may fail someday is kind of crazy. Automatic transmissions sometimes fail too, so better convert to a clutch system now, and scour the junkyards for window cranks in case power windows fail. P.S. If you'd like to repair an SMT system instead of tossing it, I'm happy to show you how. I’ve written and published thorough removal and repair instructions (for free). Plus I developed repair seal kits for the GSA and HPU units, and shipped hundreds of them all over the world. Repair seals are cheap. YIKES! I just looked up the cost of the monkey wrench conversion parts. $3500 for all the conversion kit parts!! Plus, I'm guessing $1000 or more for shop time, folks are paying $4500 and up to remove the system? That's kind of shocking. A complete set of SMT system repair seals cost less than $250 ...delivered to Greece!

      Paul, I just found your videos in you tube, you have done a fantastic job helping people out with the MR2, I am in the process of fixing my SMT and although I prefer manual, I would like to keep it original, unless the cost becomes prohibitive and it becomes more economical to swap to manual, I can no longer do as much mechanical work, and I am too far away to take this car to your facility, but will try to see how far I can get and will reach out if I need any parts.

      Agreed Paul. Exactly why my dad wanted his SMT - ease of use. Hip problems made it difficult for him to use a clutch pedal. I've since inherited the car and will try to keep it original for as long as I can. So far it has worked flawlessly. Granted, I drive it gently and only on summer weekends. Thank you for all of your help with these cars.
