  • So Craig's 83 Mercedes 240D has been great except the fact that it won't turn off now. Its s common issue with W123's with the vaccum system. If your's wont' turn off or has been delayed. Definitely check for leaks in the vaccum lines or the valcum ingition valve. Both are the ususal culprits for a car that won't turn off.

    Normal is 20-22 inHg for the pump. And it is very common for these pumps to fail. The older pumps had a rubber diaphragm that cracks. And the later models wear out from old age. Thee pumps do not last forever. The check valve on the pump could be your culprit. Sadly these pumps are not made anymore and parts to rebuild are scarce

    I hope you find the issue soon. She sounds great. I'm thinking out loud here...what if the vacuum bladder in the trunk has sprung a leak? I always check vacuum on the vacuum pump directly, if that is fine, start looking for leaks....starting with the vacuum actuators on the headlights and then the bladder. Good luck! Great seeing other fans of the best car ever produced.

      Is there a vacuum blader in the trunk? I never knew that. We determined the pump is still good, but now we think there is a cracked line somewhere.

      @@SirDrifto Our Euro/South African spec W123's have them yes. Pretty sure US will too. Remove the diesel tank cover in the trunk, bladder sits on top of the tank on the right. Sometimes the rubber between the tank and vacuum line also cracks. Looks like large solid black bubble wrap. Have fun exploring!

    I used to have a -77 300D automatic, and I had a hose in the car i had to suck to turn it off, but then I diagnosed the problem was a leaky valve in one of the door locks in unlocked position, so when locked it shutoff fine, so I just turned the key, got out and locked it and after about 8-10 seconds it would shutoff haha

    • @SirDrifto
      @SirDrifto  Před rokem

      That's a usual culprit

      how did you trace the problem to the leaky door lock exactly?

    The fan shroud is missing. Vacuum shut off valve, has a leak.

    I would think the vacuum was weak...cracked or leaking hose somewhere....not sure how much vacuum the pump should generate

      There’s quite a few vacuum lines to go through haha

    Is that a spitfire coupe in the background or a Citroen? Lol, and what's under the tarp? The diesel problem is interesting but that car is nowhere near as sexy as the Spitfire or whatever is under the tarp.
