The airplane I was going to buy crashed in front of me.
I can't make this up if I tried, I was supposed to bring this gorgeous plane home and the owners belly landed it on the runway in front of us 🤷♂️. Guess that landing gear warning light wasn't lying (hence why we made the call not to fly it). Everyone was safe. Unfortunately for the airplane, will be another story, not sure if it will be fixed or parted. It is unfortunate, as the plane was a true beauty with only 63 hours on the fresh engine and gorgeous Dynon HDX avionics.

Men destroy more airplanes than hearts. Unbelievable what bad pilots they are. After watching thousands of crash videos, I'm now reconsidering ever getting on a commercial flight with two men in the cockpit.
I have this same bike. Same year. Tons of custom work. I love this bike
If there was even the slightest doubt about whether the landing gear was working properly or not why on earth would you try flying it? That just seems completely crazy to me.
The gear was retracting when it landed. "Good Landing" "You did a good job" "You did that like a champ" Were you talking to the pilot or to physics?
Landing gear is more of a preference than a requirement, right?
What? You did not buy the plane? You were in a perfect position to get a decent discount on the original price. 🙄
Man I wanna paint my same color you don't get mad if you see another copy your idea color
Why'd you do that? Love your dad!
He's an awesome guy
Classic bike is beautiful
Painting the wheels (and everything else) black is also laziness. If you bothered to make an effort, the result might be even better! How's that for an idea ??
Painting he engine black is just laziness!
“Did you get it?” *sigh* “Yeah…” 😂 I felt that!
Insurance paid more than the potential sales price. Win for the seller, not so much for the buyer.😢
Cheaper now
Well that’s heart breaking. Looked like a nice airplane. Certainly with its age it will have squeaks but the gear not locking or gear issues are absolutely no go….
There's dumb and there's the owner of this plane.
Circuit breakers rarely open without a reason. If a circuit breaker opens repeatedly, either the breaker is bad (unlikely) or there is a real problem (almost definitely) that needs to be addressed.
That plane can takeoff without the gear down. Years ago...A pilot named Otto proved you could do it with a 707...Single pilot, too.
Oh, that'll buff out
Your Mom raised a good son...and to see you being so gentle with that wonderful dog is proof of it
That looked like the gear were retracting just before landing.
Aww man. Damn. :( The pretty plane. :(
A airplane is not a motor vehicle maintenance should be taken very seriously. This is why so many pilots are no longer with us, nice avionics, new engines etc are nice but not when you have other known issues. Stuff like this is a good way to end up being a smoking hole in the ground.
Na they put the landing gear up by mistake you cant convince me otherwise, if only one was not locked the other 2 would stay down
I'm finishing a short story about an adventure I had flying a romantic couple from Fullerton, CA to Catalina in a Gheetah.
Very cool!!
-"Safe and Effective"- Dangerous and Defective
They were fast vehicles back in the day most pickups top speed was 110km maybe so if you see a 123 24d fly past at 125km an hour that was huge and i always admired those "fast" cars as a kid
no volume ???
I'd have to ask, couldn't he had pinned the gear down before he flew it?
NEED THAT TRUNK RACK! Love it. 1985 380SL, (78K miles) 1985 300D (240K miles)
I like it. I'd face it off against a Honda Dream CB450. My Honda CM450 has like 45K miles. Never done any work to it. Runs like a Swiss Watch. I adjusted valves once just because I was doing all my bikes. Which is most reliable, which is easiest to work on, which is easiest to get parts for, which has the cheapest parts, which is easiest to maintain. Noticed I didn't say speed or horsepower. I add a lot more cargo carry capacity to my bike, because 95% of trips have to bring back groceries from a grocery store. WIthout cargo carrying capacity a bike is pretty much almost useless. I got my first shaft drive bike this year, and definitely a fan of them now. I have yet to do any work on one, compared to a chain, so we'll see how it pans out in the future. The biggest downside is to these BMW flying bricks are that they are going to be hard to find. The ones I see are way overpriced.
I have been drivin the 795 for 2 years other from electrical issues like the starter and battery the bike has been so crazy fun to drive
That WAS a nice little airplane. A bit of Bondo and a can of spray paint and she'll be good as new
Something doesn't add up here. If they flew with the gear down it should have stayed locked. If it was unlocked for the whole flight it would have collapsed on takeoff i would think. Or does the gear on a mooney "cam over" with weight on it?
Why not try landing in the grass? I would think less damage, fewer sparks, and the runway wouldn't be blocked.
That's what I always tell people, but many have never landed on grass and are scared it'll flip over. Every gear-up landing I've ever seen on grass had significantly less belly damage compared to those that bellied in on pavement. One Cessna 210 had virtually no real damage aside from broken antennas and scraped paint.
brilliant almost hit a goose i thought it was goose in the back
Wait, is he putting down his gear just before landing? It seems they are still deploying? And then he still proceeds to land? Goofball.
awesome
that thing is beautiful!
That Aero 690 is Sexy!
There was another body kit based on the Daytona made in New York. The difference was no trunk. We put one together at the shop I worked at in Texas. The gel coating was lousy we had a lot of block sanding and high build primering to finally make it look good. That's the last kit car we fooled with.😮
It’s like an airplane. Use it, mind it, and it’ll last. Never take it out of the hanger, stuff will break left, and right, just sitting there.
first car 63 vw beetle had thru highschool 75-78 needed heat + defrost so got a 69 cougar scraper used on inside convinced me to get the cougar heat before i get in was amazing in 77 i was 17 senior had big snow tires studded 5 of us went pushing people out of the forest preserve entrances that was 2 foot snow my bug poweded right thru only stuck once the snow lifted the tires off the ground we pushed it like a sled to the plowed street i loved the 63 bug never stuck at all lost brakes once e at a stop light 3 inch bolt behind pedal broke but emergency brake all the way home ok cop let me use the emergency brake so no tow
I'm assuming the insurer will deny any claim. If the owner/pilot knew the gear wasn't functional, no way will an insurance company just write a check! Once this guy decided to fly anyway, it's on him.
Nope, insurance will 100% pay any hull damage.
You KNOW the gear had a problem yesterday. Do you believe in the gear fairy?
Saltine problems that only other saltines care about.
Not what my 2000 hours looked like.
That’s one thing I liked about the older m20 Mooneys, manual gear lever.
he said he tried cranking it down, it was too stiff and did not lock. Plus he took off with it, and never raised the gear. And had pulled the breakers that would have done it automatically (i think)
Insurance should NOT pay for this!
M20F Executive. Must have had the electric gear conversion. If one gear was not down while the other two were, then this gear was badly out of rig in addition to the electrical issue. The gear in Mooneys is entirely mechanical, older ones like this are usually operated manually with a large lever in the cockpit. There is an electric drive conversion that takes the place of the lever, and was offered as an option on new Mooneys back in the day. When properly rigged, all three gear should be in the same positions throughout the retraction cycle, unlike a Piper with hydraulic gear, where one gear may move ahead of the others during retraction. I've maintained quite a few Mooneys during my career. Many mechanics dislike them because they are tight and can be hard to work on. Once you get to know how they are built, they're not bad. I like them.
Do you feel the Mooney gear system is reliable?
@@SirDrifto Absolutely. I'd call it one of the most reliable gear retraction systens out there. Like anything, though, its reliability depends on how well it is maintained. The systems are easy to keep up, but there are particulars that must be adhered to for continued reliability. Downlock tensions must be checked and, if necessary, adjusted at Annual Inspection. The older manual gear models have an AD on them about it. The newer models with electric drive have a recurring AD on the electric gear actuator that puts a life limit on the "no-back clutch" spring in the emergency extension system, and that's about the only other thing to keep up with besides the downlock tensions on those. Most important for maintenance of any aircraft is to find a mechanic who is familiar enough with them to be able to keep up with their particulars. A good many genav shops are being operated by guys who retired out of military/airline positions with enough bucks to open a shop but very little in-depth knowledge of small genav airplanes. A Type Club membership will give you the resources you need to locate a competent mechanic, and he needs to become one of your best friends. All these airplanes are getting old. Some are quite old. I consider membership in a Type Club to be a necessity when it comes to older airplanes, especially those that have been orphaned by their now-defunct manufacturers, and Mooneys are about as close to being orphaned as you can get. Facebook has several very good Type Groups as well. Good luck in your Mooney Quest! They're good airplanes, a little bit less costly than other complex cross-country airplanes. Except for the M20M TLS Bravo. High strung, high-flying, temperamental thoroughbred stallion of an airplane. I have been to 25,000 ft in a TLS Bravo. You knock one of the "o"s out of "Mooney" and you've got a better name for that one...
