    love you guys and I love watching you guys work on the Z , Thanks for the great ideas from my channel and working on my 280z . I noticed something that perhaps no one else did in this episode. when you pounded out the old bolts from the axle the nut of the bolt was on the side of the casing. however when you put the new shafts in you put the nuts toward the wheel casing . If you put the bolts in before installing the axle into the wheel housing and then installed the spacer and the half shaft the bolt would have had plenty of clearance to put the nut on . Just my observations ! not criticism.

    Having run the Porsche style CV's on my Ghia (350+ HP in my VW) I was just getting ready to tell you to retorque them at about 50-100 miles when at 13:50 into video I found I was too late with my warning.... I had the flange welded up, threaded and heat treated so I don't need nuts and I ALWAYS keep a spare set of bolts on hand -- I wouldn't trust those thin nuts for very long!

    Hi you two! In areas like the half shafts (areas that are very important, yet you can not use conventional bolt/nut locking methods) you may want to look at ideas by Stage 8 fasteners. I have used them on header bolts (thermal cycles like to loosen the bolts)., and CV half shafts (don't want to loose them at high speed).

    Too much fun! FYI on the Porsche flanges, the 6 bolts will need re-tightening after a serious track day, at least on the 944 Turbo S even if you have blue Loctite.. I have a 944 Turbo S with a ported head and a billet Bullet cam, about 380-390 HP @ crank and get under there and re-tighten after a track day. There's a small contingent here in the Pac NW of Tracked 944 Turbo S's and it's common practice among everyone. There's a couple S's north of 500 HP. Perhaps check on them after Aaron drives.

    Surprised the folks at driveshaftshop would not see this tolerance issue and engineer the hardware the other way around... maybe they make stub shafts that would eliminate the need for the custom tailoring ? In any event it is great to see you two getting out and enjoying the car before the summer was all gone !

    Most of the z cars I've seen get this far horsepower wise, the next weak link will be the factory stub axles. Assuming you still have them. Kinda looked like them in the video. I ordered mine years ago from whitehead performance to go with my r200 and 280zx cv axles. They're made from chromoly and you can get a wide variety of spline options and companion flanges for your application.

    Stub axles will be next, they are VERY spindly and friction welded. There's cro-mo versions available but they're big bux and the pumpkin is the next issue. There's an 8.8 conversion that was offered on HybridZ by a member but I'm not sure it's still available any longer and I've yet to install mine. Badly need a good 8.8 solution!

    • @BLKMGK4
      @BLKMGK4 Před 6 lety

      Johnston Spillers I explored the r230 for my car. The only LSD at the time was in the 300zxtt, the gearing I needed came from one of the trucks they were making. The gears wouldn’t fit in the TT housing and the guy who claimed he could mate everything together in the truck housing flaked on me. I gave up pursuing it when guys started reporting shearing the stubs coming out of the pumpkin. The TT housing with the LSD were neither cheap nor plentiful when I looked years ago.
      The 8.8 though is VERY interesting! The setup I’ve got needs some pieces and some tweaking to be complete. If someone has a complete setup available I might bite the bullet for it! However I’ve sold off the billet stubs I had so I’m hoping they have a solution for that for less than a mint! The 8.8 is everywhere, lots of gears, and finding people knowledgeable is easy. Fingers crossed, thank you!

    I would second the votes for welding the nuts, as those thinner nuts, even with loctite, dont have enough bearing surface to build up enough friction to keep them from vibrating loose. Another thing you didn't mention in the video, but what rating are those nuts? they looked pretty low grade/generic and even if you weld them, might not handle the environment and crack/split

    Ok.......you hit the nail on the head. “Something else is going to break before the axle does.” You’re right. You dumped an LS into a driveline designed for 200hp. Unless you upgrade the driveline to balance the power of that motor something is going to break. U joints are cheap. Think of them as shear pins. You upgrade the axles and u joints and the weak point becomes the differential or transmission. I’m waiting for that episode. “Replacing the transmission and rear end on the Datzen”

    @PiDsPagePrototypes Před 3 lety

    Watching in 2021 and wondering - Have you gone back in and checked for cracking on the Lower Control Arms around the sections where you cut metal away for clearance?
    For the Drive Shaft Shop, it would be better to do a version of the hubs that have a narrower outside diameter, and achieve the clearance that way, rather then reducing the strength of the two suspension components responsible for transferring the entire mass of the back half of the body and torque load from the axles.
    The slimmer nuts don't have a lock-washer - it'd be wiser to have reversed the design, so the head of the bolt goes where the nut is, and have the nut captive inside the spacer. (Edit : And then we get to the section on the side of the road - Lock Washers!)
