DL650 Vstrom L0 Fuel Tank Removal.mpg

- Another episode of my Dr Vstrom video series and an actual primary one if you consider that most important service tasks are better performed with the fuel tank removed.
Therefore tasks such as spark plug replacement, engine coolant replacement and air filter maintenance I prefer to perform them together and with the fuel tank and the plastics around it off. Even though some of the tasks might be possible with some of the plastics and the fuel tank on, yet there is a high risk to damage, scratch, motorcycle parts.
The tutorial demonstrates on a DL 650 Vstrom L0 model but the steps are applicable to the entire Vstrom family.

DrV
practical channel, please dont remove it and delevop, ive got vstrom 650 2006 black and i cannot do anything without you amigo, thank you
Thanks, Ride safe.
It’s an incredible amount of work just to get to the air filter. What a weird design. Thank you for the video because I bet that a mechanic would charge quite a lot of Labour time to get this done.
Thanks for watching! Its my pleasure :)
Thank you DOC. I have watched some of your videos off and on for some time but, never had a Vstrom. I recently acquired a very nice '07 with 23,000 miles/37,000 kilometers and so far have replaced the chain and sprockets. Now I'm digging in and changing coolant, air filter and spark plugs. I have a Climer manual that I purchased right away for reference. Usingthe it requires a lot of skipping around through the manual that I will hopefully become acustomed to using. Your videos have always impressed me and now I have the opportunity to put your procedures into practice.
Thank you again from the beatiful Ozark mountains of southern Missouri, USA.
Thanks very much for the kind words and congrats on the vstrom. I wish you to enjoy it and always ride safe :).
Thanks so much.
As a new 650 owner I'm sure I would have destroyed something trying to get those plastic snap pins out.
There is a ton of junk on CZcams, but channels like yours make it very valuable.
Thank you John am a complete novice my 05 Vstrom is my first motorcycle and I have never done any mechanical work before. Thanks to you I have changed my oil, flushed my rad.removed my faring and gas tank, cleaned my air filter and replaced my spark plugs. Your video's have taught me a lot and saved me a bundle of cash! Thanks again!
Glad to hear this. This was the purpose after all, to share the knowledge.
Thanks for the kind words.
I own a 2013 model. I finally pulled the tank off yesterday, 4/5/21. What a PITA. I've been a aircraft mechanic and worked as a M.E. Tech for 34 years. If I sell this bike I probably won't get another Vstrom. I couldn't imagine making repairs in the field.
Yes I understand. Its a great fuss to take it out. That is why I made the video, to help as much as possible. Ride safe my friend
One thing. They call it the "PROP" Because we use it to "PROP" things up! I will be using your video soon and will make sure to send my viewers your way! I also love the picture of you with the stethoscope on the v-strom... I ride an 02 1000 cc, but I think your info is plenty good to get me through...
Without any doubt your video is very helpfull.i just thought that we should inform anyone that they can avoid taking of the plastics.
Very helpful guide to removing the fuel tank. I watched your video several times to make sure I understood the procedure and it went very well. Thanks Dr Vstrom.
Great video and advice, wish I had known about this video 4 years ago when I was removing the tank from my bike,I managed but your video would have made my life easier😄
Glad it was helpful. Don't worry because there are and will be videos that are equally useful. Feel free to also share this with other people who you might believe will need them. Thanks and Ride safe.
Hi Doc! Just letting you know I purchased a 2007 model last week. Thanks to your videos I've managed to successfully service an oil and filter change, air filter, coolant and spark plugs and chain maintenance. Also did the fuel filter. Thanks a lot, your videos were very helpful. Cheers from Australia.
Nice work! Great to hear, thanks so much. please note that for chain adjustment, the most complete video is this one so follow this. czcams.com/video/TJi4f6FUH-I/video.html .
Ride safe

Thank you for this nice work, its great that you took this time to document the process in such a clear manner. Your English is also very good indeed well done and keep the good work up.
To help you here is the meaning of "Prop" which in this context means a support. Prop has many meanings in English...
PROP To support, or prevent from falling, by placing something under or against; as, to prop up a fence or an old building; to sustain; to maintain; as, to prop a declining state.
Just replaced my air filter on my bike that I've only owned for 2 weeks, using this video and the air filter one. Thanks so much for these, as it has made the job so much easier and straight forward. The oil filter is next and I will do it using the video you have made for that as well!
Thanks You really helped me! Greetings from Germany.
John, I know this vid has been up for ages, but im about to do my first service on my 2012 Vee and I would like to say in advance how much i have learned without taking a single nut off! Many thanks for taking the time to record and post these vids! Cheers from Australia, Ric
Hey Richard, many thanks for your kind words. Its comments like these that justify the effort to share. Thanks
I am a new owner, thats a very well explained video for us new V Strom owners, thanks
It depends actually from a lot. As a model its fine and has most of its problems solved in terms of the Vstrom generation. Please if you want to discuss it send me more details in English
Thanks a lot my friend. It is comments like yours that realy justify my effort and keep me going. I also want to thank you for taking the time to watch my other videos. I will indeed remember the meaning of prop and promise more videos soon. Take care.
Very helpful! I’ll be servicing my 2011 VStrom 650 this weekend and this video is perfect!
JAMES SLOAN thank you, there are other useful videos for your model both in the list of 1st gen Vstrom but also some more complete like the brakes maintenance in the 3rd generation Vstrom playlist that apply 100 % . Enjoy
Excellent. Followed you step by step to take off tank and change air filter. Thanks, much appreciated.
Thanks, John. I changed my plugs and air filter on my DL1000 using your instructions.
GREAT video! Thanks so much for giving me the knowledge to remove the tank. Without your video, it would have been a very frustrating job... and I'm sure that I would have broken things. Cheers from California!
Yes its perfectly fine. It will only be heavier and only a few drops will come out so have a clothe to protect the plastics.
Fantastic work, my friend! Really gives me the confidence that the manual can't give me! Thanks so much!
GREAT video. Appears to be the same process for my 04 DL1000. thanks a ton for taking the time.
Thanks again,
by all means spread the info so that more people benefit from it.
Take care
Thank you.
Very Helpful for my 2010 Vstrom.
Excellent.👍
Thanks also I am so glad I can help all of you.

Hugs from Brazil,

Thanks my friend! You saved me hours and probably some broken plastic! Great job.
Many thanks my friend. I m about to upload new videos for the new Vstrom soon.
Ride safe.
The method for popping the plastic fasteners with an Allen key was handy as I have to do my floor lining on my Suzuki Wagon. Some of the fasteners are probably similar.
P.S have you got or heard of a lizard cam? It's a very useful device with a camera on a twisting tube.
Did not know that name but I do have one :)
That is cool mate. Now you should buy the new one to continue this! :-)
I've just done this with a DL650A 2012 which is a bit different, but this video helped.
I know my friend but as I state within my videos I am doing all these videos together and that means all the service tasks. Since some of these tasks might also involve the removal of plastics I took everything out from the beginning for ease and as i also say to have more working space and not scratch them.
Thanks more videos soon
Excellent job John - thank you for making this video!
Thanks also for your kind words
Great and super informative videos. The DL650 Vstrom will be my next bike, so please keep your videos coming :-)
Sure either GIVI or Kappa, (cheaper). It should be the same thing just go and check both of them. Make sure you tight well the center bold on the bottom part where the two join and if possible and not included insert a rubber ring of that side for vibrations.
Take care
Great so all tutorials apply for your bike
Great video series. Just what I needed. I have a 2K12 650 Adventure and I will be doing most of the maintenance myself, so these videos are "just what the DR ordered"
One questions, when you disconnect the fuel tank, is it OK to have fuel in the tank??
Excellent tutorial! So useful for those if us on a budget!
Many Thanks
Makes it look very easy. thank you for these videos!
Glad you like it
Very good instructions..........................
John,
Your videos are great, Thanks man.
Many thanks for your kind words
Perfect... looking forward to doing this task now!
2 of the tasks involving the removal of the big plastics from either side of the fuel tank are:
"Spark plug section 2-6" and "Cooling system 2-18" of the Complete Suzuki manual that is not provided with the bike and you have to buy. These plastics are referred to as Left and Right cowling inside that manual and are described on section "Chassis 7-7".
Does the fuel pump seal the tank so that it wont drip if it has some gasoline in it? Nice video and thanks for explaining how the plastic fasteners work. I was always puzzled how they were supposed to be removed without breaking them. :)
Awesome video!! Thank you for being so thorough.
Hey Nick,
Thanks for the comment. There’s also one for a 2017 onwards model in case needed and I m also here if you have a problem.
Best,
The Doc
Really useful and easy to follow video, thank you
Thank you so much for your videos. They are very helpful, We have exactly the same bike (color and year).
Excellent John! Thanks for make this video!

Keep on watching
Thats a great idea, maybe you should all chip in for me to buy the new model and I can cover this also :)
Hello John, thanks very much for these excellent videos. They are helping me a lot to my home maintenances.
I have a good friend from Greece, what part of Greece are you?
Hello Urik,
Thanks for the nice words. I am from the north and a city called Veria next to Thessaloniki.
I will thanks
Perfect video
Thanks. Nice video, as usual ! :)
William Yamm Thanks, I just uploaded a new one :) .
Thanks for the video buddy! Very helpful!
Thanks
Thanks a lot, your videos are very useful
***** Thanks also
i remove my tank slightly differently, not the proper way like you. i undo the bolts as you do, then hold the fairings open by string or wire wrapped to the grips. this only holds the plastic fairings open about 2 inches maximum, but leaves loads of room to get the tank off. saves alot of time not pulling and replacing all the panels
Thanks also
thanks, it's interesting
Thanks
Could you tell me which model engine guard you have? I am buying one soon and I like how yours looks.
Sure it is, visit the rest of my videos also :)
The tank can be removed without taking of the plastics my friend
Thanks :)
thanks sir.
I'm your FC.
Great tutorials!
I want to try to do this with my bike.
One question: do I have to empty the fuel tank before disconnecting it from its hoses?
Thanks.
Thanks. No you dont have to
Ioannis Parapontis
I did it!
Changed the air filter!
Thanks to you! :-)
Glad to be of help. Well done :)
I would gladly buy a manual from you if you made one for the 2012!
hinthint :D
Dr.V Hi there I'm glad that you Exist!
I have some questions.. I've changed the fuel motor pump, and after that the hose connector was not be able to hold the connection
after 3 or more connections I manage to cut the Oring inside the connector "Γ"
I'm not sure for one component that is orange and it seems its going in between o-ring and the grey safe connector in the pump.
any advice on that,
Also there is one other detail. my fuel doesn't stop to drip when I disconnect the hose
so I have to put something to stop the bleeding, is it says anything to you?
Thanks.
please snd me photos of what area you refer to, to ensure we talk about the same thing. Either follow my instagram and send it there @doctorvstrom or send it at my email.
@@DrVstrom to save you and me some Time... I realised that this orange thing must put and push hard into the hose base, so I figure it out. But one question remains still, when I disconnect the hose from the fuel pump it keeps draining out non stop the fuel.. I ll send you in your Instagram too. Thanks
Hello, did you empty the tank before take it out, or it stop flow when you press those 2 white levers?
You dont need to empty the tank
Hi Should I empty the tank before to remove it?
No it will not be a problem, only few drops will come out so have a rag to catch those. If you however think it will be heavy you can but no you dont need to.
top up my water in the exspashion tank to day.how stupid is that to put it out the way so you have to undo 200 bolt to top up.
nice video but my next bike is going to be one you can get to easily unlike the v strom
AT 9:35 you talk about that rubber but i can't find the part number. does anyone know it?
Thanks for your comment, expect more videos soon
