    Great review as always Ken. I just traded in my Z6 II for this camera and am waiting for it to arrive. Can't wait. While I got some great images on the Z6 II I did feel it got in the way at times as the AF system is workable but a bit behind the curve in its implementation. So seeing your review and hearing that this camera gets out of the way so I can focus on composition is very reassuring. Keep up the great work. I've learned a lot from your videos over the last few years and can't thank you enough.

    Thanks for including the HDR and focus stacking examples. My R3 will do that but I had never tried it thinking it would be "too fiddly" and "doing it for real" would require external software to do it right. These two examples showed it working extremely well on-scene, in camera. Canon consumers are lucky, by the way, in that Canon distributes many of its software innovations across the pro platforms, regardless of price tier, as they develop them.

      The R6 was a very good camera. But if you can swing the R6II or you shoot video, it’s an absolute MUST. Not being able to save custom video settings on the original R6 forced me to part ways with it as soon as this came out. Makes no sense that users can’t save C1-C3 for video at all. Or the fact it can only shoot in manual video or full auto. Just a big head scratch there. The R6II is borderline perfect for nearly everyone. Some users will think they need more resolution, when very few people actually do. I shoot this alongside the R3 and ended up selling one of my R3 bodies after I got this - it’s a VERY excellent camera.

      R8 takes the same pictures. Huge difference is that the R6 II has all the controls you need while the R8 is so tiny it’s missing a lot of controls seasoned users will miss. You can make the same shots with each, just it takes a lot more clicks in the R8

    Hello Ken, thanks for the review, I've upgraded from a canon EOS R, but I have an issue with R6's LCD display, the display appears "cropped" with a large blank border round it, is that normal?

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  Před 2 měsíci

      Depends how large, it’s not at all like an iPhone; there is always a black border around the screen and depending on the mode in which it’s working there can be even bigger borders with data and tinier images. See photos of it in my full review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/images/r6-ii/back.jpg

    Ken, I noticed that when you showed samples of your favorite R6 Mk 2 photos that the lenses used in all were EF lenses with an EF - RF adapter. Is this because you prefer the old EF lenses (as I do) or a different reason? I’ve tried 3 RF lenses and sold them in short order as my EF equivalent lenses were sharper or as sharp …and they are already paid for.

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  Před 5 měsíci

      Like most people, I already own everything in EF. Personally today I prefer the RF 14-35/4L and RF 24-240mm, and if I need longer I pull out my EF 100-400 L II on the adapter that lives on it and I’m covered. Unlike Nikon, EVERYTHING Canon has made since 1987 works PERFECTLY on the R cameras, so no need for new lenses unless you want them. Thanks!

    Wonderful review as usual, Ken. Funnily enough, I just today ordered my R6 II, a few accessories, and the RF 800 f/11. Should get them next week, and really looking forward to it. I've been a happy DSLR user for years, but I'd been thinking about adding a mirrorless to my kit. One thing I was wondering about was if I could use my EF lenses, for example my 100-400 II L, with a 1.4x extender and the EF > RF adapter, on the R6 II, and it was your report on this exact topic that really helped me to make my decision. I opted for the 800 f/11 because as hard as I work to improve my photography skills, there's no way I can justify spending 5 figures on a lens (and my wife would have me locked up). But the f/11, from what I've read, seems like a reasonable way to get that extra reach and good results without breaking the bank.

    Apart from the smaller sensor size, how does this camera compare in terms of image quality & features versus the R7?

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  Před 7 měsíci +3

      R6 II has a bigger grip and bigger overall size and many more controls than R7. Get R7 for birds or anything where you need the strongest telephoto effect possible and the R6 II for everything else. R7 is unique in having the worlds only self leveling feature, otherwise the r6 II is superior unless you prefer the smaller sensor. Both OM are quite light and portable. Full reviews at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r7.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm thanks!!

    • @davepastern
      @davepastern Před 7 měsíci +2

      I think you'll find the R6II has around 1.5 stops better high ISO performance and also better DR. What do you want to shoot should be driving your buying decision. If you're thinking of wildlife and/or birds, then the R7 may be an attractive idea due to the 1.6x crop. Note that the R6II is only 24mp too, which quite often, for smaller birds or birds that are a distance away, is just not enough. More pixels on the bird(s) is always desirable.
      I have a R3 and R10 and I really wish Canon had done a pro APS-C MLC right, rather than the crappy effort that was the R7. Poor button UI, no battery grip, poorer high ISO performance than it really should have. Very poor sensor readout speed, so big issues with rolling shutter. A R4 in a R3 body with a 26mp BSI stacked APS-C sensor would have been lovely and I'd have bought it over the R3. Canon's decisions have been very poor in the MLC era imho.

    The price just dropped on the R6 2 body to $1999! I'm ready to upgrade from the R6 and my only hesitation is the R5 2 that will be announced this month. I'm struggling and would appreciate any advice you can offer. Do you have any sense of how long the sale price on the R6 2 will last?? Love your photographs, reviews and advice!

    • @KenRockwellTV

      Yes! I track prices of every camera over time at my reviews, and as you can read at my R6 II review at kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm#price today's price is the lowest its' ever been, matching the pre-Christmas sale price that was only once before seen from 7-16 Dec 2023. Get the R6 II; I've never liked the R5 controls and we've been waiting for an R5 Mk II for like a year now. Don't wait up late for an R5 II and no one ever knows how long today's price will last. Thanks for supporting my work by using the links in my reviews (and in the description here) to get yours; that's my biggest source of support. THANKS!!!

    I agree with so much with what you said, incredible easy to use camera. I started photography with R50 a year ago and realise I really enjoy it and upgraded to full frame 3 weeks ago. Naturally I gravitated to the R6 mkii coz of the ibis, I would have preferred the size of the R8 but lack of ibis stopped me. I am extremely happy with my R6 mkii and I’m thrilled a pro photographer with years of experience like yourself have such high praises for it.
    The vertical image can be viewed vertically as shot on the LCD, the setting needs to be changed in the menu settings under the yellow tab with the spanner 🔧 icon, tab #1 choose Auto Rotate for the computer icon only. Then the vertical imagine will fill up the whole screen in camera display.

    Fantastic review, I need to set my C1/2/3 settings to the exact ones you have and then do a few customizations for my own shooting because it sounds like you have it dialed in super well. Too bad it does not let you save and recall that data to a downloadable file, it sounds like an oversight and hopefully Canon releases a firmware update to address if they get enough feedback...this is a professional grade camera!

    I've had the R6II for about a year now, and my sole gripe with it isn't even necessarily its fault. It's still not supported by Lightroom for tethering. Adobe claims they rely on drivers from the manufacturer to add software support. This means that either Canon has been sitting on drivers (which should be nearly identical to the R6), or Adobe has the driver they need, and just haven't added the support yet. In either case, it should't have taken a year+ to add tethering support. For studio photographers, whether that be portraits, products, etc... this is a big feature to be missing. Any chance you can make some noise and get the ball rolling?

    Thanks for this review sir! I have the Mark 1 and have loved the experience inspite of its short comings. With the current discount i am tempted to upgrade, but wanted to verify if its possible to access images on the camera via usb connection using the Canon camera connect app. My workflow usually starts with reviewing images on camera and importing only what I rate. I am hoping with the upgrade i can use the phone app for rating images. Over a wireless connection its a slow experience amd hoping over usb it'll be much faster. Plus the images look better on my phone than the camera's back screen.

      Haven't tried; if you're in the USA call and ask Canon at (800) OK-Canon. I use Photo Mechanic to sort and select; you can select form the card (and probably the camera if used as the card reader) and then just drag the selected images into your computer, so much faster and easier (for me) than using the tiny screen on the camera. How is the build quality between the 2 cameras ? Does not the R have more magnesium alloy? Since i print very large, I think that 30 vs 24 megapixels will have a substantial hit on the PPI. How does the Auto White balance compare between the 2 cameras? Above all, I appreciate the correct Auto White balance. Hi Katie! It works GREAT on the R6 II!!!! All the lenses and bodies in the EOS R system work great with each other. The 24-105 f/4L IS USM is a bigger, heavier, better-built lens for serious use and is magnificent on the R6 II, full review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm.htm. The RF 24-105 IS STM is a very light weight and also super-sharp lens, with superb stabilization, full review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm-stm.htm. I'd get the STM if weight or price matters, and I'd get the f/4L if sensitively in low light at the 105mm end or physical toughness was more important. Honestly I prefer the RF 24-240mm for its longer range www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-240mm.htm, but you didn't ask that. Thanks!

Yes, I am also using my old ef 24-105f4 and EF50mm f1.8 with it. The only problem I am encountering with adapted 24-105 is the communication (between lens and body) error, I cleaned the contacts and continued, and again the error occurs. AF in R6 II is spectacular. I didn’t compare directly; I do recall being very impressed years ago at how the R5 focussed on dog eyes as they were running around rather than their noses. You can’t go wrong with Canon; I prefer the newer R6 II over the R5.

      I found the R5 files to not play as nicely with lightroom in a specific use case of timelapses where noise shows up.
      While you can do noise reduction- the sheer file sizes make it hell when you have a 900-1300 raw file timelapse to batch process…
      My older canon R for some strange reason seems to cancel noise more consistently frame to frame in lightroom when you go to view the finoshed timelapse
      So then it’s do you buy the expensive topaz software for video that reduces noise or do you simply go for the larger pixels and more manageable file sizes of the r6ii?
      I am leaning on r6ii because everything I sell is limited to 4k 30-60fps

I still use and love my DSLRs but this mirrorless hybrid is on another level. I can use 3 types of Canon lenses on it; RF, EF, & EF-S (adapted).
    Hopefully Canon will allow for 3rd party RF lenses but for me I’m good being able to adapt my older lenses. Some of my EF & EF-S STM lenses are on another level with the R6MKII. The STM focus motor has no trouble keeping up with the R62’s autofocus. The glass is good enough to meet my needs. I understand no 3rd party lenses is a nonstarter for some pros but for me, I’m good with Canon’s ecosystem as it is.
