Spelunky No Gold True Pacifist Hell Run

- Less than a day after Spelunky was first shown on AGDQ, No Gold Pacifist Hell were completed. Objectively, this is one of the greatest challenge runs the game have to offer because both counters on the level transition screen, gold achieved and enemies killed, both stayed at zero for the entire game.
Keeping the game pacifist is the hardest part, because the game is very generous with what counts towards your kills. Example: if you bomb a piece of gold that flies over the screen and breaks a pot with an enemy in it, it is your kill. On top of that, both bosses are also interesting to do pacifist. When Olmec is dropped in the lava, the game counts it as your kill, so you need to bypass that, and the only way to do it is to go to hell. The hell door needs a platform so you can enter it, which can be done by stacking two or more push blocks on top of each other. Yama is special because he counts as your kill even if he is killed by a tiki. After some testing, the way to bypass that is to place him down and pick him up, then kill him using a tiki, or by crushing him between a tiki and a ground tile.
The hardest part with this run was the low bomb count. It made Olmec really hard, because I didn’t have enough bombs to fix any potential mistakes, so it needed to be planned well. The low bomb count also made hell harder, because I could not just bomb my way to a safe path. 5-1 is a great example when that got me into a really bad situation.
In early stages, damage boosting is necessary to get through some tough situations, like the bats in 1-4. Black market is one of the hardest levels to complete pacifist, even harder no gold because that means you can’t by anything in it before making the shopkeepers mad at you. I used a mantrap and a cobweb to get rid of all the bats, and spent some bombs to make all shopkeepers drop down into the bottom chunks, even the ankh keeper.
Yama is a really hard last boss for pacifist runs. The screen is filled with flying enemies, and Ox Face and Horse Head guards the floor of the throne room. I deal with the flying enemies by killing them on the tikis in the middle of the room, and Ox Face and Horse Head are good at killing themselves using their bomb attack.

GG, Krille. You handled that like a boss, some really quick thinking and tough situations. That 4-1 with Anubis, the mummy, the ghost, and that sudden flying scorpion all in the corner with you was insane. This should be on one of those "Best Gaming Moments Of The Year" lists.

Phsycman Honestly my favorite world because enemies are uncommon and it's easy to maneuver in the open space. By ice caves I usually have a jetpack or at least a cape with climbing gloves.

+DB I know this comment is old, but you don't need to really time it, if the trap is directly below you, at least - you can just whip when you're at the apex of your jump and your whip will be active when the arrow hits. Hard to describe what I mean exactly, but hopefully it's not lost haha

This just blows my mind. Especially how he treats the bosses without kills, pushing these blocks to go to the exit, grabbing the mask, wtf?

ok so i have quite a few hundred hours into spelunky and i'm sure you do to, but how do you train to fight your muscle memory to not stamp on an enemy or whip something in your way, its amazing! truly blew my mind with this run well done!

You think that Yama is a child class of Monster? That would explain it, but if I was making bosses they would probably be stored in a seperate parent object, rather than the same that player, characters and items occupy... Just saying that the creator probably put his head removable on purpose

This was an absolute pleasure to watch. Thank you for sharing it! I have something like 500 hours in Spelunky and never thought of that way to escape the Olmec fight. I was impressed the lengths you went to avoid whipping enemies, like sacrificing a hit to a bat early on after it was obvious the paths forward were so difficult.

To think, the creators made it possible for a Pacifist run, because Even Anubis is affected by traps, and teh fact the boulders don't melt instantly, just made this all the more interesting

It doesnt matter if it would kill itself, he would have done it himself no need to throw him into spikes that's definitely a kill.
If we count only kill count then stomping mobs to stun them should be fine too. But we didn't see that in the video. I wonder why?

The way you got rid of enemies without directly killing them was simply amazing.
Amazing run. I especially loved that Anubis/Ghost part, i thought twice there that its all over. First when u went above the circle, and second when u almost jump into ghost (probably the climbing gloves troll as always).
Learned a few things about the game I never knew, mainly that you can get to hell riding on blocks instead of Olmec, and I had no idea you could just grab yamas face, also never occurred to me you could just take the necronomicon and leave

+ssjsqueak There is an annotation in the video for that part, basically you just want to confirm that you did not raise your kill count at all during the run. The other way to confirm it is to watch the level transition screen after each level, but that would be boring to do and look bad in a video.

I have done a lot of pacifist runs before this. The most complicated part is to figure out exactly what counts as a kill. For example bombing the ground resulting in a gold nugget flying into a pot with an enemy inside is your kill.

This run never fails to floor me - after hundreds of hours sunk into Spelunky I've only managed a No Gold run once (that wasn't even to Hell), god forbid I try that as well as pacifist all the way to Yama. Are you secretly Derek Yu? I wouldn't be surprised

More to the point: I think the composer has great prospects of improvement to look forward to. To be blunt: I think it sounds awful. Absolutely amazing run with lots of on-the-fly planning.

in the Black Market, when the Mantrap was stunned from eating a bat, could you have picked it up and tossed it down into the Ankh shop? Or does it not do enough damage to kill the shopkeeper?
