The Terror of LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL

- čas přidán 30. 06. 2024
- Set in the 1970s,"Late Night with the Devil" merges the genres of possession horror and late-night television, delivering a gradually intensifying narrative that culminates in a chilling climax. Directed by brothers Cameron and Colin Cairnes, the film features David Dastmalchian as Jack Delroy, a late-night talk show host striving to rival the likes of Johnny Carson.
"Night Owls," Jack's syndicated program, has been a staple for night-time viewers across the nation. However, following the tragic death of his wife, the show's ratings have sharply declined. In a bid to salvage his career, Jack organizes an unprecedented Halloween special.
This broadcast features an eclectic lineup: a medium, a professional skeptic, a parapsychologist, and a survivor of a satanic cult, all of whom are oblivious to the malevolence that’s about to be unleashed upon unsuspecting viewers. Throughout the film, Jack's personal tragedies are gradually uncovered, shedding light on his desperate quest for a return to prominence. The tension escalates with each eerie incident, keeping the audience riveted and anxious, until we reach a harrowing and irreversible crescendo.

I saw this movie at a late night showing in an old movie theater. You couldn't ask for a better showing.
To me, this movie was a breath of fresh air. I feel like I'm drowning in horror movies funded by huge studios that all feel the same. It feels like everything nowadays is a prequel/sequel, reboot, or just an unoriginal mess with cheap jumpscares and overused CGI. This movie had a good mix of CGI and practical work, and even though some effects didn't look great, I can appreciate the work they did with what they had.
Shudder and A24 are always turning out bangers year after year. Definitely need more small to medium movie studios that give new artists a chance :)
I find that the best fx are a mix of practical and cgi. An this movie did it right.
I think everyone wants David a leading role again. He's a great actor.
I distinctly remember his face in Batman.
Apparently, everyone else did too.
Good for him. He seems decent.
Hopefully, he just smiles and waves, and keeps his mouth shut.
Just as long as he makes no deals with the devil to do it :)
i was only here for the PR bots chilling about how David is a worthy actor hahaha 3rd comment it is
@@mikescorpio13 ok Mikey
This movie is a fantastic example of analog horror. I love this genre.
There's nothing analog about it it's digital. Analog would be you watching a VCR. Why is everything analog now? V/h/s is found footage. Pov is point of view and there are four so what is up with this devolution of language.
Feel like it might be the first full length analog horror movies since the genre has emerged.
It felt like a really good full length movie version of a V/H/S side story imo. Not to say I didn’t think it was good because I did but the ending did fall a little flat in my opinion
@@deadpool2334 Technically Skinamarink was first, but this one is so dang fun!
Skinamarink was so boring omg.
I think the girl looks creepier when she smiles and giggles at the questions
This legit feels like an SCP story come to life. Insanity.
thats why I loved it! I loved hereditary and smile for the same reason: I felt like it was an SCP manifesting
The use of owls is interesting... because that's the "owl god Mowlek" is depicted in the actual Bohemian Grove. They even show a giant one in the film.
The god owl mowl
lmao i thought the same thing, i laughed out loud when they called it "The Grove", lotta subliminal messages in the movie.
Moloch is represented by a bull not an owl
many cultures that initially had no contact with each other consider Owls to be bad omens. likely because they are silent flying birds of prey. the fact that their "faces" that were the closest thing to uncanny valley ancient peoples wouldve encountered probably contributed to their ill reputation too
@@seanjdempseyThis. The association with Moloch came about after details of the child-sized effigy burning were leaked, when people started drawing parallels between Moloch related child sacrifice and the Grove ritual. I’m not saying the Grove isn’t weird af or bad in itself, but afaik there’s no historic link between Moloch and owls, or even strong evidence the Grove worships Moloch. I feel like if anything, the Grove just worships itself.
Fun fact. James Randi was the illusionist who made the decapitation bit in Alice Coopers' tours during his first years.
I kept wondering why the actor who played Carmichael looked familiar he played Bane in the matrix franchise ironically another character killed by possession
Loved the Carmichael character
Found this
I believe there were grove “handlers” in the crowd as well. Like the skeleton costume guy, he’s in Jacks illusions/dreams. Idk if there’s more I only saw the movie once
Lilly wasn't oblivious to anything. Pretty obvious that Mr. Wriggles was in partial or full possession of her the whole time. Everything she said sounded like the demon masquerading as a little girl.
How they achieved 70's camera look ? It is fantastic.
Most probably they utilized filters in post production. Certain lenses and their own filters can create such an effect as well.
its lofi and technicolour
your film stock for the "look" would be the Kodak Eastman's 5247 100T II which is a celluloid film.
for your sound it will all have to be based upon how the song was mixed and produced. you can edit it for effect but ultimately it will be decided on the sound engineers quality in regards to their mixing of the song you choose.
Chromatic aberration, Gaussian blur, 4:3 aspect ratio, and audio degradation/low fidelity effect will do the heavy lifting to bring the retro look/sound to life.
Wasn’t expecting you to analyze this video, but I’m so happy you did! Great video!
This movie has like 15 title cards before the movie starts. It’s legit outta control
It makes sense, the movie isn’t backed by a huge studio, it would take a lot of money to produce this film and that means getting the funding from a dozen other studios
After the first 5 or so I thought it might have to do with the narrative of the film. But like @halogalaxy5612 said, I agree.
I remember thinking it was a gag at first
bro just found out that movies are made outside of the major studios
I suspected that the last two were part of the "documentary" lol
this movie is amazing for a lot of reasons. the girl who played Lily gave a wonderfully creepy and unsettling performance. The guy who played the medium transitioned perfectly from slimey manipulation to genuine terror and shock. and what the hell was up with the guy in the skeleton suit!? that guy is up to no good! why is he in all the key shots? and why is he so completely and totally unmoved by all the horror around him? its such fun to speculate.
A lot of explained channels are frankly insulting but honestly your's has always been a standout. Engaging with the themes, the interviews by the creators, the actual events, small details, all of it. Honestly a breath of fresh air to see among so many imitators. It honestly just inspires me to watch the films or read the comics I see on this channel.
This film looks amazing and nuts in using the uncanny valley and uncomfortable atmosphere
Fun fact: The movie narrator Michael Ironside voiced Darkseid in Superman TAS, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited and in numerous DC Animated films, he even reprised his Darkseid role in Harley Quinn TAS. He also played Jean Rasczak in 1997's Starship Troopers.
Edit: He even voiced The Dark Knight Returns in The New Batman Adventures episode Legends of the Dark Knight.
Cheers 🍻
No mention of Sam Fisher? Possibly his most recognized role
Scar from the Lion King as well
@esmitty9548 haha I used to make that mistake all the time. That's jeremy irons, he was Alfred in the DC movies
@@canniblemutants Ah you’re right. My bad lol
I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. I wouldn’t want to see this particular angle all the time, but it was nice to have a little change up.
David Knocked it outta the park with this one, excellent movie, gonna reccomend it to me mom.
Watching this while i wait for the cabinet of curiosities video :D
I really enjoyed this movie. Especially loved the 70's setting, look and vibe, which they pulled off flawlessly. The girl who played Lilly did a great job being both sweet and innocent and totally creepy. The ending was kind of a let down, but most horror movies are.
Really enjoyed this movie but agree that the ending was a let down. Plus they kind of gave it away with the whole Bohemian Club stuff in the beginning of the movie.
Managed to watch this film after I found your review and all I can say is that I was speechless during and after the movie ended. Currently 3 am here now and watching it during the "devil's hour" really makes this movie so fantastic! Words can't explain how I am feeling after watching this and now I am in a mood to binge watch horror movies til sunrise.
Evil is like a vampire... you have to Invite it into your home.
Some Evils, just like some Vampires, require no invitation, you have to do your best to fight it or avoid it whenever the situation calls for it.
And others kick in the door and unalive you for being insufficiently patriotic or venerating the supreme being in an incorrect fashion or whatever.
It's a great point about an Alternative version of the 70's, familiar yet different. I've only recently got into watching horror and I actually watched this at the cinema. Although I'm glad I saw it with others, someone else I follow made a great point that the format lends itself to home viewing on a TV to make it more meta, if that is the right term. Some of my favourite movies have had strong horror elements, and even though my experience with pure horror is still limited, this felt unique and very immersive. My only issue was with the energy special effects as they looked worse than what can be achieved now, and yet better than what a a 70's camera could have captured. In essence, they were out of time.
this is really insightful, well put
How do you feel about Ari Aster’s movies?
@@dynamite_dynamite5954 Since I'm still relatively new to actually watching horror as a viewer I haven't seen any. I've watched tonnes of making-of and analysis videos which is spurred mostly from my love of special effects. Hereditary looks good and Midsomar looks to have some great filmmaking.
Love this movie it captures the essence of the 70s perfectly. Can’t thank you enough for doing a video on this movie. Happy 4th of July to you
I love how the demon is far from the worst character in this film. You know what they say about “the road to hell”.
Paved by good intentions?
@@saminaminx 💯
I thought this is one of the best horror movies in the past 45 years. Seriously, this was such an excellent film.
Gonna save this video for later, because I HAVE to see this movie. Idk how I haven’t heard of this until now 🤯
It’s on you tube now for free.
David Dastmalchian is wonderful in everything he does.
no he is not... bot
One of those premises that you ask yourself, "Why didn't I think of that?" So simple and obvious that it all fits in 1 1/2 hours so perfectly. Great film.
This movie was ... Wow. I was really excited for it before it came out and man did it deliver. This movie gave me a very visceral feeling of terror... The suspense was fabulous... The ending was fabulous. Definitely in my opinion a top tier movie.
I thought this was an absolutely terrific film. Scary and captivating without excess gore for gore's sake.
Latenight shows are truly a dystopian nightmare reality
It's funny cuz I always felt that kinda energy surrounding them too... especially the ones that aired in the 80s and early early 90s... I remember living in a city called rialto in California... And we had a public access studio/ building that was in our cities industrial/ commerce part of the city ... And id always make a note of it . Then I'd watch the WALLY GEORGE SHOW on a channel called KDOC... And the wally George show was WILLDDDD... It was like the Morton downey jr. Show and jerry Springer before those shows were a thing . And he'd do stuff like this all the time and bring Satanist and just odd people on to debate religious groups ... And because Wally was conservative he'd always end up yelling at the people opposing religion and the studio would always turn into chaos. It wasn't necessarily scary to me as a kid... It was just ODD. I was way too young to understand the parodic kinda dark humor of the show...and the fact it was all a SHOW and that wally was a character acting. So yea like I said it was always a little off putting whenever id think of it... Anyways the show was taped at a public access studio called KDOC.. and the logo would always be on display in the corner during the show..and because id always pass that one public access studio we had in our city on our way to get on the freeway Everytime we'd have to leave out of town somewhere.. KNOWING THAT BUILDING WAS THERE would always spook me too...cuz to me it was synonymous with all the confusion imagery the show would put in my 7/8 year old brain. And ya... So to add on to your thought OP.. I definitely always felt the same way
You had me at voiceover by Micheal Ironside
check & DOUBLE check; versatile & consistently sympatico.
I think someone should put this on the television with a group of friends, and not tell them that this wasn't just a old pre-recording of some night show. Have them watch it, and have them being freaking out what they're seeing, not knowing that this was supposed to be this scary on purpose cuz it wasn't in fact a night show.
I hope no one has friends dumb enough to believe that.
I liked how, when the girl’s head split she looked like a grotesque owl
Loved this film. Loved the concept, the setting, the characters, the meshing of real events with fictional characters. The crushing ending. It’s a predictable ride but I enjoyed the whole thing.
This movie finished and I felt like something was missing. I did enjoy it but it felt incomplete to me lol.
Only found you fairly recently but I've been really enjoying your content the way you break things down and put them across is really pro. Great stuff man
Ah. I understand the scene a little better where Luke levitates C-3PO to spook the Ewoks in front of a an early 80s audience.
This movie was so captivating, got irl cult history . The team did amazing on nailing the atmosphere. Such a mysterious doom u can’t turn away from. It’s a cult classic now
This movie was so simple, but so great. Definitely worth the subscription I pay to Shudder.
Already clicked like before the video started. Thanks for all you do sir
Was waiting for this. Great movie, mix of analog & body horror. Probably the best horror movie of the year.
2:25 not me hearng sponsors and automatically skipping ahead
I loved them involving the audience at the end and the host being caught in the ritual /completing it by passing it on to us by viewing the death of the child
Check out Incantation
I just watched this movie then you make this video. Great timing. It was a change in horror style movies. I guess he got what he wanted in the end but only for 1 episode
probably one of the best horror movies to come out for a while fun fact the Grove is still very much a thing but they changed locations since their California base was uncovered
What are you talking about, it's still here and they still go there.
Love these break downs of the movies you do
Oh and I will say this....they did their homework with that Demonic Cult part. Reminded me of the footage of The (actual) Church of Satan (Anton LeVey's church) hat has been broadcast many times ....
Also, some of the clips give me "Faces of Death" (one of my favorite movie series)
It felt exactly like Faces Of Death, you’re spot on.. I still have the VHS tape, with the box cover too. Along with Dawn Of The Dead VHS tape..
I found my old blockbuster card as well..
Glad you covered this one
Loved this. I miss "short" videos like this 😅
Ngl, this is what late night shows should be...entertaining
My friend Shaun just showed me this movie about a month ago. I’m glad I watched thru the slow build up. The end made it worth it.
It’s a little before my time, but, it was pretty good.
I especially liked the freakiness of where she turned into an electric monster and the very end that showed what actually happened…..but I won’t spoil that part.
Congrats on reaching 1mil subscribers, I’ve been watching your videos off and on for years now
very cool movie and nice twist on the found footage film. david does a fantastic job, he really shines playing these wierd troubled characters.
Thanks for the video
I really enjoyed this film.
I think they shoud make more vhs style movies , we need more retro type media
THANK YOU!!
If they ever make a movie about Christopher Lee’s life, this guys the man to do it!
I enjoyed this movie! I didn't necessarily find it scary, but it was an entertaining watch and I appreciate the unique stylistic choices and storytelling. I'd rather a horror movie attempt to do something different and out of the box, and I'd take that over another boring generic jump-scare movie any day!
Finally watched it and man I wanted more. It was so interesting and kept me engaged
I really loved this one, something finally coming out for horror❤
It had a good run at the beginning, during the latter part, everything jumped off the window.
It could've been much better, but we get what we get. Still a good popcorn movie.
What are you yapping about? The second half is when the film gets better. Did you even notice any of the ghosts in the background throughout the film?
It definitely went downhill fast the weird unzipping of the girls head made it feel so corny.
The bad effects towards the end really stood out
@@wileyreid5420it’s supposed to be corny 😂
@@thearmchairjournalist566 that doesn't make it good though
I thought of the skeleton Man to be the devil as well, but then I thought of it to be death haunting Jack and ready to claim Abraxas sacrifice.
UBC is the fictional television network in The Network. Great reference!
I fxcking loved this. Had me guessing all the way to the big reveal 😂 lovely
You missed the demon's hand on Jack's shoulder 😊
Good video though, you caught other things that I didn't.
Definitely keep an eye on these directors
You sir just earned a sub
The cymbals used on that drumset weren't produced until the 80s lmao got em!!
Masterful is always my friend I honestly couldn't describe the movie better myself
0:18 whoa is that the dude who played Polka-Dot Man in Suicide Squad 2?
just watched this before the video and wow such a good movie.
Personally, I thought that the very end scene indicated that Jack knew how to perform the hypnosis himself - albeit perhaps he lost control of it?
We only hear it one other time with Carmichael. It makes me wonder - was his agenda to use the same hypnosis trick that Carmichael showed, but on a bigger scale? Perhaps mastery of that power was what he gained from the Tall Trees, but just couldn't use it effectively. Imagine if he used that skill to help kill his wife and pass it off as cancer, all in hopes of using the tragedy for ratings?
First movie I haven’t looked away from in a LONG time
this was surprisingly good
This looks amazing
Such brilliant film making in so many ways ❤❤❤❤
Nice to see the Spot again
Notice how powerful Hollywood tries to portray evil and how weak they try to portray good..
Not true, at all, you have to consider the genre, and context..
There are tons of movies where good triumphs- those are Hollywood movies too.
This is a horror movie, it’s meant to terrify.
Night Owls was also the name of the secret group on Deal Or No Deal Island around the time this movie was coming out.
6:00 Thank you! You're the first content creator (that I know of) that made this connection between The Grove and real life Bohemian Grove (who's members include many, MANY famous and influential men (supposedly) including Hollywood actors, former Presidents and politicians.
Love it - back to your roots 👌
I noticed a few of your older videos aren’t on your channel anymore, have you cleaned up and removed old videos or am I incorrect?
I like how the movie opened with Pentagram's "Forever My Queen"! 🤘
Lily ends up transforming into Mitch Hedberg.
I use to like Mitch’s comedy, I still do, but I use to too.
Loved this movie 👏
Not sure if it's an age thing, I'm 50, a lot of my friends are my age or mid 50s, and we all loved it. It was a basic spooky story, not over the top and not trying to be something it's not. It stays in its lane. All the cast were spot on and the production well thought out... Harking back to the 70s/early 80s.
By contrast my younger friends, they thought it was boring and expected more.
this movie made me laugh so much
This was a great film, didnt know much about it when going into it.
The only part that actually spooked me was big face Lily. That was just freaky. Also i didnt know it showed up during the seance until seeing this video, so now im even more disturbed that i didnt notice the first time.
RIP James Randi. The obvious inspiration for the skeptic and his confrontations with Uri Geller
Edit: I'm glad he mentioned it in the video.
Holy shit!!!!
Is this the thing semi-based upon in American Dad, that’s one of the tag lines, Welcome Night Owls
I love to hear michael ironside's voice. I'm a big fan of Splinter Cell series since 2004
Just saw the movie on CZcams, its freaking awesome, especially the ending.
Giving the name *"Lilly"* to the girl who winds up possessed by a demon is so blatantly on the nose, my face hurts.
it’s better than “Lucy”
