    I used to be fascinated with different methods of cleaning so I can tell you this: you can use soap, oil or toothpaste to clean the nails, and each will clean them in a slightly different way.
    Soap uses surfactants, so it will break apart the bonds in any oils under the nail and help remove it; oil will mix with the oils already present under the nail and help gently lift the residues (think how an oil cleanser breaks up makeup); and toothpaste contains abrasives so it will help to literally scrub away the dirt bit by bit.
    Oil will be the most gentle, soap will be great for dirt and grime and toothpaste will remove staining most effectively. Pick and choose!

    A hack for those plastic nail brushes you use to scrub underneath your nails, if the underside of your nails are really stubborn, trimming the plastic bristles with like an old cuticle nipper and making them like 1/8 of an inch long makes the bristles less flexible (because they’re shorter) and therefore stiffer! Sometimes, I feel like those brushes are too soft and I can’t really scrub underneath the nail as good as I would like to and trimming the brushes works really well for me!❤

But my nails on my left hand are always really clean underneath and really easy to clean but the nails on my right hand need a really thorough scrubbing and get dirty so easily. So yeah for me, short nails get more dirty and I think it’s because it’s drier underneath lol

    I'm not a professionally trained nail tech, manicure is my hobby and every time I get a new bit I always tested on my self first. First thing I check - can I cut my self. Then I do a dry cleanup on 2,3 nails and check on those nails in the following week. Keep in mind I do no more than 3 sets in a week, so i have the time to try, test and experiment

    This is exactly why after years of doing enhancements. I completely stopped all. Because I my hands were always in moisture. I am a retired florist. The upkeep was so time consuming and expensive!!! I would have to go every week just to maintain. Then I learned to do myself thanks to Suzie and Liz. Again I was constantly maintaining. I can't stand dirty nails !!! I'm a farmer now and definitely no way to keep enhancements clean now. So I have natural strong nails since I stopped everything except basic cleaning and moisturizer.

  • @Jiminie53421
    @Jiminie53421 Před 5 měsíci +5

    I find that when my hyponychium is more dry and gets kinda flakey, it gets stained more easily and stuff gets caught there more easily and is harder to remove, even when I scrub throughly with a brush. When it’s moisturized and healthy, it doesn’t really stain and is much easier to clean!
    I do my nails at home and lately, I’ve been exclusively doing hard gel overlays for the past 6 months to 1 year and have been growing out my natural nails and have found that they seem to stain less and stuff does not get caught underneath as easily as with any other nail enhancements!
    My personal theory is that when my natural nails are longer, when I use nail oil, it absorbs better and helps keep the hyponychium nice and moisturized. I think it’s since my natural nails are longer, there’s more nail to absorb the nail oil and it keeps the hyponychium moisturized for longer while the length helps keep it protected from the elements and just drying out in general!
    I can’t keep any nail enhancement on my dominant hand unfortunately cause they always fall off and my natural nails keep breaking on that hand so the nails are really short and even though, I apply nail oil and moisturize both hands equally, the short nails on my dominant hand are always more dry and the underside always stains and gets stuff caught under there so easily😢 I have no idea why I can’t keep any product on my dominant hand because I’ve tried every type of nail enhancement but nothing works. I can keep nail enhancements on my non dominant hand for 4-6 WEEKS with ZERO LIFTING and I am able to do this consistently and have even gone 8+ weeks when I’ve been too busy with very very minimal lifting but for my dominant hand, they start to lift after only a few days 😭

    Hiii Susie 😊 I'm a manicurist from way back in the day as well. And yes, we didn't have the same kind of drill bits back then. I used the smallest barrel. I also would add a small drop of 5 second glue. I knew there wasn't any moisture in there. It worked every time. Also, my clients who had been to other manicurist who didn't clean under the nail or clean the cuticle would complain about them. I attracted many clients from my clean, careful, natural looking nails and the care I took and showed them. And that worked everytime as well ~

    I don't seem to have this issue much, but my nails are thin to start with so when they grow out a couple of weeks I find the product has adhered and covered the tip. I keep them short and extend them, and change the nails after a month. When I do I clip them right down to nothing again. That said, top coat under my nails does help, and for everything else there is a nail brush. I keep one in the kitchen for after cooking and one in my bathroom. I use it every other day at least and don't seem to have a lot of issue. I don't garden or do crafts with powders, though - powder gets under there like crazy!

    Great video, just two asides, as nails grow out the hyponychiums grow, and if you let them they can grow to the full length of the nail! Gently push them back from time to time with a cuticle pusher or something so they don’t do that. Most people are active enough that just the daily use of hands and nails pushes them back. But if you have a client who’s has grown out a bit it may take a few times to get those things under control, if you push too much it starts to get tender so it may take a few visits to get them under control. You definitely don’t want them to grow out that much, it will cause problems. I’ve seen nail techs use the e-file to do this, it doesn’t hurt and works great if not done too aggressively. Also, in nail school they told us to use 20 volume and a que tip or a brush to bleach under nails, if bleaching is necessary. It works great if you have discoloration. Don’t leave it on too long, better to do it twice, than overbleach (Ps, don’t get it on the skin you will dry out your customers skin, little white dry patches, just apply on the underside of the nail)

    The natural nail is more porous than the enhancement. I do this all the time. My mom is an avid gardener, so her hyponychium gets pretty stained. I use my cuticle bit to clean them. And then top coat to help reduce the staining

    I have to agree with/Suzie about the nail polish 💅 under the nail & the toothpicks. I’ve definitely tried both , thinking it would take care of this “dirty” issue . To no avail. 😢
    I’m looking forward to trying the methods Suzie showed us here. Thank you again!
    Peace , love & clean nails wishes for all ! 🥰💅😉

    Tip: Keep a portable/travel toothbrush in your bag for when you’re out and about to clean your nails. Just make sure to tap the excess water out really well before folding it back up.

    I have 2 nails that the underneath cuticle grows out like your index finger. Those 2 nails are also thinner than the others & they're always tender. I carefully push it back & its difficult to not break the skin.
    Thanks for this video with all the info!!

    I remember back in the day before nail techs had these drill bits they would use the sanding band under my nails. That always felt great too unless they held it too long and burned me or cut me.

    I love filing under the nail for two reasons, one, I can’t stand that little ledge as they grow out. And two, I hate seeing my natural nail. So I just completely file away the free edge as it grows.
    Also, I keep a toothbrush by every sink so I can scrub underneath as needed. 😁

    Some of my nails have long hyponychium. I do my own nails and when I do a fill, I either clean the natural nail or remove it with an e-file. I’ve had no issues whatsoever. I feel like a lot of comments were made by people do t actually do nails or are just learning about them. I think it’s simple, some who’s been doings fit over 30 years would obviously have skills and confidence to go this vs someone just learning obviously wouldn’t have the skills needed to file underneath. Even before I started doing my own nails; the nail techs I’ve gone too also filed underneath when doing fills.

    I build a habit of having a short-tough-bristled brush next to my kitchen and bathroom sink. I use it whenever I need it, so stuff don't dry in there under the nail.
    Also - the kids like using it when they have very dirty hands, so its also a good habit to have, I think.

    I’ve been following you for so long,I’ve been a fan for years. I watch everything you post. However, this video is just shedding light on so many uneducated people makes me feel they should all be going to nail school. Or complete some type of formal training. Even the terminology we use (cosmo grad here) they aren’t familiar with and they’re so confused I can see from the comments. You’re doing a great job educating them ! But they need school, or SOMETHING hands on ❤️

    If you have concerns about staining and debris, then wearing gloves while cooking is an absolute win. However, when your nail tips are as sharp as Susie’s, gloves will just rip through. The best way to clean under your enhancements is a good nail brush. If stains are resistant, then use a Q-Tip dipped in hydrogen peroxide to clean out the stains, then immediately wash and scrub the nails. It may seem tedious to touch something, then immediately wash your hands, but if you want clean nails you will do it regardless. I don’t use nail forms often but I have near had this issue as I wash my hands and scrub under my nails more than 6 times a day 😂 I always apply cuticle oil to the underside of my nails. Cuticle oil will help keep the excess hyponychium to a minimum as well 😉

      I often wear long stilettos, almonds, and lipstick nails and I find wearing oversized gloves (xl for my hands) and that eliminates the gloves ripping!

    I thought about you yesterday when I was at my nail salon in Maine, US. I remember watching your video about the greenies. Last time I went, my thumb nail was starting it, he filled it as usual. Yesterday, I warned her, (a different person) that my nail was getting really funky. She said that we should remove all of them and start over. My right nail doesn’t grow straight it kinda grows down, tending to separate. Do you think removing the ledge from my nail like in this video might help? Had I not seen your video about the greenies, I would have freaked out and probably never get my nails done again. I’m not a nail tech but I’ve learned a lot from you. Thank you! 💕

    This is partly why i prefer to overlay products on my natural nails, then there's no ledge between enhancements and natural nail. It makes it much easier to keep under the nails clean

    • @NailCareerEducation
      @NailCareerEducation  Před 5 měsíci

      ALL or ANY building product is an overlay/ the only reason you don’t have a ledge underneath is because you’re natural Nail has grown all the way up. But you’re still gonna have the dirt no matter what you put on top and if you’re not having a ledge that’s because who’s ever applying the product is doing a very good smoothing job doesn’t matter what product they’re using.

    • @Hannah-yf2yr
      @Hannah-yf2yr Před 5 měsíci

      @@NailCareerEducation @NailCareerEducation well yeah all nail product is overlaid onto natural nails, but the term overlay has become an industry term for applying product only to the natural nail rather than extending the length. When you aren’t extending the length there's really no reason for there to be product underneath the nail where it could trap dirt. The product sits on top and on the free edge while the underside remains product free and therefore cleaning is easier like it is for those without any nail enhancements
