  • A new report shows a known carcinogen called BENZENE in popular sunscreen and after-sun products. Valisure, a pharmacy that conducts routine batch testing, put 294 sunscreen and after-sun products to the test and found benzene in 78 of them. Although the FDA sets the limit at 2 parts per million for this type of contaminant under very special circumstances, there is NO SAFE LEVEL for sunscreen or personal care products.
Benzene has been linked to leukemia and lymphoma.
Benzene is not a sunscreen ingredient, so you will not find it on the label. It's considered a contaminant, meaning it was introduced during the manufacturing process. So it's not about mineral or chemical, "clean" or not clean. It's even found in aloe vera gels that don't contain ANY sunscreen whatsoever.
Here is a link to the REPORT, which includes the list of SUNSCREEN PRODUCTS FOUND TO CONTAIN BENZENE (PAGE 12):

It’s really confusing when you find the same sunscreen on both the “detected” and “not detected.” I wish there was a much simpler list to comb thru.

I agree. Unfortunately, the study was done using specific lot numbers and samples, so that information is critical to the findings included. I will share more information as soon as we know more!! Hopefully that will bring more clarity to the situation!

Yes but it is about the lot number and expiration date. The ones that tested negative is only by the lot number and it says it could just be of one sample. Different lot numbers of the same brand can still be contaminated

Completely agree. That's why I linked to the study and to the lists provided, which include the lot number and expiration date. As more information emerges, we will have a better sense of the magnitude of the issue.

Is the study up to research rigors? What is this valisure company, do you know why they did this research and has anyone replicated their results?
Thanks! This is really good to know!

Love the healthy skepticism here! Unfortunately, this isn't the first time that benzene has been detected in over the counter products, and it won't be the last. In fact, just last week benzene was detected in dry shampoos and other aerosol hair products. There have been several recalls by very large, reputable brands, that are acknowledging the contamination and taking measures to prevent it from happening in the future.
