Actually at first India was pretty pro-soviet so yeah, it's just politics, at that time Nixon being friendly to China was actually more possible because of the Sino-Soviet Split and would pose much more of a threat since China is right at the Soviet border. The US doesn't really care about "democracies" since they have no problem with countries like Saudi Arabia, as long as there are benefits.

Russia gave info to India that UK and US is coming to attack India in the name of some excercise. India requested for help. Russian subs came all the way, that too they came silently right below US and UK aircraft carriers and showed up all suddenly which literally shocked both. Russia stood right between us and them. I am deeply saddened by no detailed mention of The Indian Para on 11 December 1971 . It was the largest para invasion inside enemy control (800 solders) by any parachute regiment from WWII till date .

The role played by Indira Gandhi in '71 is resounding. She displayed shrewd and analytical mind when she appreciated the terrain analysis expounded by COAS which clearly suggested that any attack before and during the rainy season will restrict the move of the Army to roads , making it a sitting duck. She asked COAS to address Pak Army on the All India Radio , assuring humane treatment if it surrendered. Had such assurance been conveyed by letter, it certainly would not have been believed . This assurance on AIR was heard by the entire World and was now binding on India. This resulted in Pak Army lowering resistance to surrender, more so as Seventh Fleet had failed to arrive in time in support.

It became the Indo-Pak war when the Indian Army entered. Before that Mukti Vahini was seen as the militant group in East Pakistan. If the Indian Army never entered then it became today's Balochistan.

People of west Pakistan, were unaware of the atrocities that govt. and military did in Eastern wing. People of both sides were innocent, it was the corrupt politician and Supreme arm command that was and is to be blame.

One major point missed by the media and authors on this subject is the magnanimity shown by India. Having won the war, India did not annex East Pakistan even though it was once a part of India. India gave the country to Bengali Muslims. This generosity has gone unappreciated. As a student of History, I don’t find any parallel to this magnanimity anywhere in the world.

We Bengali didn’t liked British oppression, they wiped out, East & West Pakistan got independence, then India. As a Bangladeshi, I am protesting and giving some corrections about this wrong interpretation. Basically, our freedom fighters (Muktijoddha) did the main things to win the war against the Pakistani army in the 1971 war. Yes, we agreed that the Govt. of India supported us with shelter and food but they also had an interest in weakening Pakistan.
