  • Classic Game Room reviews DIDDY KONG RACING for Nintendo 64! classicgameroom.com/vaultpages...
    Who needs roads when you can fly? With land, sea, and air courses, Diddy Kong Racing may be Nintendo's most varied genre game ever. Familiar faces from Rare platforming games and bunches of newcomers charge up their skills to challenge themselves and boss characters on the track (or above it!).

    No "Take out the leader" power-ups automatically makes this better than Mario Kart

      Yeah I always hated that. Kind of a cheap way to make races closer. Rewards the racers doing shitty and punishing the best.

      If you watch my N64 retrospective, I spend an inordinate time talking about Diddy Kong Racing, haha. Basically, Mario Kart 64's item system meant that even if you weren't that good at the game, you'd still have a fun time playing it with friends. In DKR, the items are helpful, but too weak to be absolute game-changers on their own. Of course, that also meant that winning was based mostly on your skill, and that's why I'll always hold it in higher esteem.

      @StigMurcielago Před 10 lety +4

      I think the Honest Trailer Guy said it best: "...it teaches players that winning and being the best driver don't always go hand in hand." haha

    As has been said before, DKR is definitely a better game than Mario Kart 64. The game is huge with so many different tracks, modes. Just brilliant, vintage Rare.

    • @seriouskano2
      @seriouskano2 Před 10 lety

      I like them both for different reasons. DKR's track design is rather uninspired compared to MK and the controls don't feel as tight. It is more diverse though and the story mode and the overworld make it really stand out. The multiplayer modes are both awesome to this day.

    I disagree with your assessment that Mario Kart 64 was better. this game had better graphics, more tracks, the option to use a kart, plane, or hover craft, the ability to upgrade your power-ups, unlockable characters, cheat codes, and an awesome adventure mode that you could play in two player mode with boss races that were fun and challenging. and once you finish the game, you can unlock the mirror image tracks. I am not saying Mario Kart was a bad game, in fact, I absolutely loved it, but it did not have any of these features. Diddy Kong Racing was by far the better title

    This is my favourte N64 racer. When you're really good at it you can go like twice as fast as the opponents (at least in the car). And the adenture mode is sooo awesome. I guess you can't get into these kind of games properly when you didn't really play it 10 years ago. Or rather 15.

      +Brodo Swaggins Completely agree, this is a very poor review with mentions of "to be fair" as if DK is some kind of 3rd rate game. The problem is the reviewer obviously only played Mario Kart back in the day and hasn't actually played DK Racing properly but has only switched it on to be recorded for the review. "Mario Kart is better there is no doubt"??? and "I kinda don't get the adventure mode" obviously hasn't played it because it isn't some mystery. Banjo pilot is a copy of DK.

    The reason DKR was the best for me personally was that I could really get into the ridiculously imaginative qualities of the adventure, and the fact that there was an adventure to begin with, but mainly it was because there could be more of a skill gap. This game took more effort to get good at it. I still have yet to accomplish the impossible and unlock TT. With Mario Kart, it was always a toss up as to who would win because of how the item system was set up. I will give Mario Kart the benefit of being a better party game since there always seems to be that moment at the end where two players are neck and neck, but getting together with other equally skilled players made DKR equally fun in that aspect as well.

      ***** I'll admit that the track design is perhaps more intricate in MK64 (it's been a while) but Diddy Kong Racing, with the different vehicles, and certainly the single player mode, has a lot more to offer. It really depends on what point of view we take regarding its 'qualities'.
      But, to this day, the A button on my N64 controller sticks because of how much time I played MK64.

I think I probably played F Zero at a friends home, same as Wave Race. Personally, I really liked Star Wars Racer -- that was the futuristic racer I chose. Sadly, though, after playing that, Mario Kart just seemed so damn slow. It was really hard to go back afterwards.

    That's weird. Mark usually likes the skill-based Mario Kart games better than the ones with more luck. I thought he'd like Diddy Kong Racing a lot more since it is more about hitting speed boosts than grabbing powerups. And even then, you know exactly what powerups are what on the track, so you can pick what to go for.

    CZcams felt a little emptier without you around CGR, good to see you again. That said, this game was originally meant to be a sequel to the RC Pro AM games on the NES. Nintendo suggested they use Diddy Kong and the rest is history.
    It was a wonderful game, full of awesome music, graphics, and a metric ton of gameplay to be had. I'll always remember playing through that Christmas village, with that kickass remix of "Winter Wonderland" blaring as it snowed outside my house...
    I suppose it's not quite as... refined, as Mario Kart, I'll say that. There is a craziness or just a hectic nailbiting sense in Mario Kart that's not quite there in DKR. But for the most part, the two games are different enough that there's more than enough room for both of them.
    And seeing as Mark was (and is) a Genesis man back in the day, I suppose he wouldn't get the appeal of Diddy Kong from the Donkey Kong Country series. Trust me, he ain't nothing like Godzuki or Scrappy Doo.
    By the way did CGR review Crash Team Racing? That's like the spiritual successor to DKR, with the whole adventure/racing mashup. Would be nice to see after N64 week is over.

    Someone's probably already brought this up by now given the age of this video, but probably the most interesting and distinguishing feature about Diddy Kong Racing is its single-player "Adventure" mode, where instead of playing through a dry and generic Grand Prix by yourself like in Mario Kart's single-player, there's a '90s mascot platformer-style "hub world" that you have to explore in your vehicles to collect items and unlock levels.
    It also had boss races where you took on something other than another kart/hovercraft/plane, usually under seemingly unfair circumstances, and would have to puzzle out the best strategy to win. Since playing multiplayer with friends was a relatively rare treat when I was young -- my school friends lived seven miles away from me -- the depth of this single-player mode gave this game a lot more value than Mario Kart 64 for me.
    Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed feels like a spiritual successor to this game in many ways, since that also has a detailed single-player mode with unique challenges, but to my knowledge no other games of this type have taken the "'90s platformer with karts" approach quite like Diddy Kong Racing did.

    Diddy Kong Racing does not have pseudo-randomized items; being in 8th place will not reward you a blue shell.

    I got both Diddy Kong and Mario Kart, and rarely play Diddy Kong. Mario Kart is a cult classic, and if you play both after one another, you will feel that you only want to play Mario Kart. But on positive, I do like the fact you have hovercrafts, planes, and cars.

    I can’t confidently say that I like Mario Kart over DK Racing or vice versa. They are separate entities to me that both happen to share colorful characters and go karts, but beyond that there’s very little comparison. Mario Kart had the most memorable and favorable characters, while DKR had different vehicles and better, interactive race tracks in my opinion. I distinctively remember the awesome pirate ship and winter race tracks.
    DKR had way better graphics, but the required coin collection challenge races sucked. Mario Kart definitely takes the win in that aspect. No stupid coin challenges, just simple straight forward cup races with points that accumulate based on the outcome of each race. DKR had cup modes too, but like I said, adventure mode with those obligatory coin challenges for each track was painful. I hated it so much. As far as challenge, DKR bosses were pretty damn tough (especially the dragon and Wizpig). Mario Kart 64 was easy peasy. All the cart classes honestly felt the same to me and it really wasn’t hard to place 1st every single race, unlike the original Super Mario Kart for SNES.
    I like both titles, but for very different reasons. If someone where to add up all the positives from each game and create a game based on those, I have no doubt that you would have the greatest and most fun racing game ever created.

    Welcome back, Mark / Classic Game Room!
    I will like to hear your review of Super Smash Bros., Super Mario 64, Blast Corps, Zelda, Majora's Mask, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Yoshi's Story, etc. You need to review more N64 games if it's called Nintendo 64 Week. I know you already review some N64 games in the past, but reviewing more will be appreciate.
    Keep it up, Mark!
