One of the best games for Nintendo 64 in my opinion. I agree it's very underrated.
I'd personally say it is the best title on the system. Top 3 at the very least. But it really depends on taste for sure. Most folks would op for Oot, Smash or M64.

Similar only perhaps in aesthetic design, but not very much in gameplay. And Gumball you're definitely not alone, 14 yrs since my favorite game ever launched, still counting.

Mark, it's too bad you don't read the comments, because I found out there's a full guitar soundtrack of this game! It's called "F-Zero X: Guitar Arrange Edition", you'll find it on youtube. At least some other people will maybe read and check it out, its awesome!

Fast Racing Neo seems like the spiritual successor to this. Someone stepped up with racing boats when Nintendo stepped down.
You can't forget the X Cup. Randomly generated stages every time.
it's pretty self-evident, but you didn't even mention the excellent track design...
AG racing games been making a return recently. You should check out Fast RMX, RedOut, Formula Fusion, and Grip, also BallisticNG is a free WipeOut like game.
Pro tip: Corner with tapping the shoulder buttons. It removes a lot of that horrible slow understeer sliding and also you often take out a lot of competitors. It will improve your laptimes significantly!
This game has some of the best track designs, and the Xcup was a random race generator!
Seriously great game. I really liked GX but for whatever reason there was something about it that didn't quite recapture the magic of X for me. I'd actually love it if we got a game like GX but with some of the style of X, in terms of the comic book stuff and also the music.
But Mark! have you heard of or tried the F-Zero X Expansion Kit? that is like... RIGHT up your alley. it's for Nintendo's equivalent to the 32X, the N64 Disk Drive!

I don't think it is a underrated F-Zero game, but it deserves a better reputation within the Nintendo 64 racing games library. For me, the best racing game on the console
This is probably my favourite N64 game of all time. I loved Goldeneye and WCW Revenge and I put a tonne of hours into Top Gear Rally & Duke Nukem 64 but this one was always special.
This was the only racing game, that I took time to master the tracks, mechanics and improve lap times.still remember the first time I heard the soundtrack, it blew me away!!
Great game! I haven't played it as much as the original F-Zero on the SNES, but it's still pretty fun!
That soundtrack is extremely underrated.

The music is probably the best music in any N64 game.
Also, this is the only 3D game on the N64 to run at 60 fps.
Loved this game - the "death race" was my fave mode. So easy to just pick up & play for a quick game fix

Even tho the visuals are kinda bland in F-Zero X but damn this game really plays well and that 60fps smoothness man! So good! 👌💯 My #1 racing game for the N64 next to Beetle Adventure Racing.
I believe that one day there will be floating raceways in the sky where hyper flying cars will battle it out for 1st place.
I had the game and a play so much and have so much fun with it.
Top 3 game from the 5th Gen imo, one of the very few, if not the ONLY premiere 64 game to run at a solid 60fps and play timelessly. Excellent classic, only surpassed by its mighty successor GX on the GC.
You could argue that the track selection may overall be better here, and air flight it undoubtedly better too, but superior driving mechanics, handling, sense of speed and story missions make GX the best overall, but man they're both so spectacular that it doesn't matter at all.
Lastly I wouldn't say that F-Zero and Wipeout aren't similar at all, they actually play completely differently. Both represent the pinnacle of the genre though.
Mark have you heard Taro Banno and Hajime Wakai's arrange version of the X soundtrack? If you haven't, you should.

I think it looks pretty! Maybe a bit simplistic? But I like it. I decided on not getting it on WiiU VC because there was talk about bad analog controls. This might've been fixed now though.

Hey Mark you should listen to the official F-Zero X guitar arrangement album. It's super dope. Only thing that sucks is that there's no cover for "Devil's Call In Your Heart".

One of my favorite video game soundtrack of all time! I thought the N64 version did it best too. Never owned an N64 but would buy just to play this game original. Always feel the analog sticks arent mapped like the original systems in emulators so I get the feeling it takes away the experience the designers originally intended.
Even though its a fan made game, you guys gotta try F-Zero X Climax. It feels like a legit F-Zero X 2.0
Love the game, love the review (as always). But don't forget to use Z and R buttons to help turn. It will make your life so much easier. This game is hard as nails to begin with, but not using the full controls makes it impossible.
These carts are going for $20 bucks now??? Man only 5 years ago I bought this game for $6.99 at my local Vintage Stock.
I own this game on the Wii Virtual Console.
Good stuff. When my wife and I were first dating and she came over my house for some smoochin', I just left this on the title screen after having just downloaded it to my Wii. The shredding loop of N64 guitar didn't seem to distract or bother her one bit.
Fucking love this game. Still play it on the real hardware to this day. The music, the artwork, the characters, the 30 contestant field, the SPEED. I could go on and on about why I love this game. Blows away any Wipeout title IMO.
I dunno. Wipeout on PS1 plays great.

Something quite evil about this game is, when you kill an opponent you hear some childish/happy xylophone, and a star appears at the top of the screen. And if you get 5 stars (kill 5 opponents) in one race you win one life. Haha

F-zero x dd is amazing. More tracks and be able to edit tracks and vehicles there is a English rom floating around works grate with firmware updated ever drive 2 or newer emu.

Justin A oh yeah I remember that the one you I had was the blue falcon I kept it for awhile and at McDonald's the employees is that they didn't even know we were doing a composition I was mostly in 3 or 2 place at time I did it for and i remember the kids would place bets I win most of the times

I am not a Nintendo fan, but, why on Earth doesn't Nintendo make more F-Zero games for their newer consoles? I don't get it.
I can explain why, I tried to understand this as well and I got an answer, the CEOs of Nintendo only care about money and don't care that much about how much effort goes into their work on the same level, really Nintendo has come out and said F-Zero is dead because they feel that it won't make them money.
The only thing that sucks about this game, is how dangerous the killer soundtrack is. Imagine driving your car on the highway, and "Big Blue theme" starts playing in the background. Oh boy...
Let's not forget the dreaded master difficulty.
Sure those graphics look kubistic,blurry with muddy rainbow banding colors, has little backgrounds and special effects and the music & sounds effects sounding really muffed,but that's because nintendo had to deal with limited cartride space and 4KB of ram for textures.
So for it's time it was a blast compared with the snes game but looking at it now feels so lifeless, can't help.
They were specifically targeting 60FPS for this game, that's why the graphics look so bad compared to other N64 games.
ah the N64, where every game people have the slightest fucking inclination of nostalgia for costs at least 80 fucking dollars.Thankfully this looks like an exception

I guess that Nintendo were more into gameplay and fun rather than graphics and details
