  • Over the weekend I played The Quarry, and what I mean by I played it I mean on the weekend I mean I sat down for ten hours and played the entire game in one sitting. I was so captivated by the story and all the decisions I could make, and to me, The Quarry was absolutely a worthy successor to Until Dawn.

    @b1uezer Před rokem +835

    For me The Quarry didn't handle the "mystery" and fear factor as well as Until Dawn did, and that makes it second to me. Until Dawn does a really good job at keeping the player guessing as to what the main threat is, by intertwining Josh and the Wendigo to make it really feel like you were being tortured and tested by this omni-present, demented hack-n-slasher. It really lets the anxiety and curiosity build as you uncover clues relevant to the "real" threat. In the Quarry, the Werewolves are introduced way too early to give the player time to question what really is going on. The Hackett family was pretty under utilized too, and their actions never really sold that they were out to "get" the kids (even though the game makes it that way). I never really felt like I was against something I didn't understand, and that's crucial to a good scare in a horror game. Also the werewolves look way more Nosferatu-inspired rather than something I'd recognize as lycan-like, and that really bugged me.

      Yeah I definitely have to agree.
      When I first played Until Dawn, that game was SCARY as hell on top of being an amazing thriller experience.
      The Quarry was great, although I don’t think “scary” or “thrilling” is the right word to describe it. It’s more just an entertaining experience.
      It doesn’t have the same impact that Until Dawn did, but I guess that makes it special and I appreciate it for that.

    • @b1uezer
      @b1uezer Před rokem +16

      @Zach Donato I was saying that the game doesn't do a good job at making their encounters seem more dangerous than they are. We as players quickly realize they're trying to help the kids, so their sections in the game don't really serve much of a purpose other than padding imo and it could have been pushed further (i.e. they could have told the kids at any point they were trying to help, but chose not to because scary guys with guns are scary trope).

    I think a good way they could've referenced until dawn is by having one of the characters bring up Josh, Hannah and Beth since their fate will be the same in everyone's gameplay (either dead or turned into a wendigo). They could've even done something small like have Ryan mention a story he heard on the podcast about the missing Washington siblings. Also, the dad was a famous movie director (I think) so the disappearance of his children would've been a pretty big news story.

    The clown mask from the jumpscare car in Until Dawn (and the rails Until Dawn game as well) can be found by Emma in the locked room in the food storage (i think). Things like the basement bunker were so similar, and I was really waiting for The Sanatorium to show up, or something else to confirm a direct connection. Hard agree. Nick barely had any screentime and I think that he could've been a lot more interesting if they didn't lock him into transforming in chapter 5. Jacob also barely does anything, even though he's the one who broke the van in the first place. Emma and Abi do a bit more than those two, but they still barely do anything. That really disappointed me because I really liked their dynamic, but if they both live until Dylan and Kaitlyn go to the scrapyard they're banished to the storm shelter for the rest of the game. It was also confusing that they built up a potential relationship between Dylan/Kaitlyn and Ryan but then immediately threw it out when Ryan leaves with Laura.

    I like Until Dawn, but for some reason I love The Quarry way more. I felt much much more attached to the characters and the world building in The Quarry. I never really felt bad for most of the main characters in Until Dawn because they were all really mean to each other and because of the prank that got Hannah and Beth killed. I also had a hard time remembering and differentiating all the characters (granted, I haven't revisited Until Dawn since probably 2015). The Quarry on the other hand had very memorable characters and the dialogue was cringy but in a good way. It felt more natural and it was definitely funnier. The best part about this game in my opinion is the friendship dynamic between Dylan and Kaitlyn. Their personalities fit together perfectly and they have some of the best dialogue in the game in my opinion. I love the scrapyard scene as well. Laura and Max's relationship was also what got me so invested. I love Max's funny, laid back attitude and Laura is just such a badass. I feel like they definitely could've done something more with all of the other characters though, since Dylan, Kaitlyn, and Laura start to outshine them in the last half of the game. Whenever the POV would switch to someone besides those three, I'd often find myself wanting to get the segment over with so I could get back to the main reason I was playing. I will never understand why they didn't add a scene at the end where all the survivors meet up and talk, or a scene that at least says what happens to everyone at the end. And no, a podcast explaining all the collectibles I gathered doesn't count. The Quarry obviously has a lot of problems (plot holes and that dog shit ending) but I still love it so so much. It's probably in my top 4 favorite games of all time.

    So a few things, I personally felt like Until Dawn was much scarier to play through, there were multiple sections in that game I was afraid to go into different rooms and It just felt way more eerie. In the Quarry, they introduced the main threat too early, and didn't leave much room for imagination to run wild like you could in Until Dawn with Josh and the Wendigos. The main way they can tie games like this together is by having certain world elements that repeat. For example, say in the next game you had the characters walk into a convenience store, and there is a shelf with bags of Peanut Butter Butter Pops, and then a magazine rack with news on the latest films from Washington Productions. Little nods, but nothing that would break the previous games.

    To complete the seasons, fall gives Halloween as an obvious option, but Thanksgiving also works for a school break where people travel. In the latter case, maybe some friends remain on campus while most people leave to visit family. A remote boarding school, empty of most of the students and staff (perhaps they are even not supposed to stay there) can give that same isolation and creepiness.

    Before i start watching i think we're all biased when it comes to which is the beter game. Until Dawn was the first of its kind, i'm not counting the games made by that team that made heavy rain or whatever other mediocrity. Until Dawn's cover art alone has simply more atmosphere, style and is just iconic. Same can be said for the Quarry tbh but to a lesser extent, one extra thing that MADE Until Dawn was the don't move feature. Nough said. Sony has a lot to do with the success of their IP's, it was Supermassive games best game thanks to Sony's "assistance", Bloodborne is FromSofts best game, it's like that one vid about "Back 4 Blood proves Valve carried Left 4 Dead". PS4 features. perhaps extra funding and the fact that the Wendigo was revealed much later into the game, totally subverting expectations helped make Until Dawn the great game it is. Anyway, excited to watch the vid since the quarry itself is very exciting, definitly the company's 2nd best game and i think way more different things to discover in each playthrough which is a big plus over Until Dawn

    One of my most favorite gaming memories is staying up all night with a friend playing Until Dawn and miraculously keeping everyone alive. I have never felt more satisfied playing a game than I did watching all of the characters I grew to love escape that lodge. It remains one of the best games I’ve ever played despite the fact that I hate horror games. I was on the fence about this game as some people are being really critical of it. The most common complain I’ve heard is they dislike the characters and the dialogue. Honestly, I think cheesy dialogue and dumb characters are what make these games. It is a riff on generic horror movies after all. These people are supposed to get on your nerves at times. But what Until Dawn did well was they made you care about those characters anyway and made you try really hard to keep them safe. That’s what made it good. So if The Quarry can do that effectively then I see no reason why it is worse than Until Dawn. And I think people are trying too hard to compare the two of them and rank them when both can be good for different reasons. This video has convinced me to check it the Quarry out though. If it comes close to making me feel how I felt playing Until Dawn then it will be great. And I think the werewolves look just as terrifying as the wendigos were, and those guys legit haunted me lol. I'm glad there wasn't any solid connection of the two because then there implies a canon ending. I think my struggle with The Quarry is how unconnected the Carnival Narrative and the Werewolf Narrative feel up until the very end. I think that given the ghost supernaturalism we could have seen Abi and Emma or perhaps Jacob witnessesing a ghost version of the carnival and witness Kaylee and Caleb and Silas together rather than just being told about it. Like, a really good storytelling bit was finding the Hirophant card and getting to witness Eliza see the whole place burn.
    The Quarry was good and fun, I just wish that the characters were more dynamic. No one seems to really change by the end of it, whereas Mike and Jesse change pretty much regardless of choices, but characters like Matt and Ashley's personality's are super choice dependent. No one seemed to change in The Quarry. And Emily might have been the absolute worst, but when you played her it was fascinating to see how brave and how similar to Mike she actually is. Emma and Jacob both existed in this unlikeable space like Emily, but I never felt like their strengths came out to make them palletable like Emily. They just kind of bumble around and act like idiots the entire time.
    I think that's why so many people attached to Laura, because we get to see her change into the werewolf hunter.

    I don't have the games, but I have watched both of them on YT (Along with Heavy Rain and Life Is Strange back then, so I do very much appreciate the whole Choose Your Own Path type of games and get inspired by them), so Idk how much of a difference my take will be, lol. I have watched at least 10 people play The Quarry from start to finish and then watched 1 person play Until Dawn (as a refresher because I forgot). I think it is needless to say that Until Dawn will be forever a favorite for many people with all the aspects that the game upholds. The game provides a lot of threats and jumpscares to keep the blood pumping enough until dawn (Aha). The game however feels a bit short to me and I can't connect to the characters as much as I had hoped to. For example, Ashley kept sobbing a lot so I felt like that was just her character and Matt/Jess were absent for a long time. But the game here is phenomenal and I love the story behind it all and the psychological stuff with Josh and the butterfly effect.
    The Quarry IMO is a close second because to me it was very enjoyable. Other people might not feel the same and I think it just depends on how you perseve the game (I watched Kubs Scouts first which made me love the character Ryan at first, but then don't like Jacob. But I watched Jacksepticeye after that which made me like Jacob a little more). And for other 'purely watching and not playing' people, I feel we could be influenced a lot by the person we watch because if we watch someone who is negative and uninterested in the game (Saw a YTer like that...), then we won't love it as much.
    What I will say is that The Quarry did better on characters, I feel we get to know the characters and their awkward and weird humor (which I'm sure it's to show that they're young since they're fresh out of high school and going to college). I feel the game went more on a 'thrilling' path (like Little Nightmares) and the graphics of the game is beautiful and new looking compared to UD (although the motions can be weird like Emma's mouth and Dylan's goofy look). The Quarry gets interesting once Laura comes back in, then everything can go to crap since more people are likely to die as easily versus Until Dawn where it's interesting the whole time since it's just so intense. But I believe what The Quarry could have done better is add more horror elements and threats to juice up the game and keep the WW theme hidden for a while (like in UD when Wendigos were revealed in the end). There should be more danger within these kids, I would've been fine if they ACTUALLY put bears into this game because then that would be another threat. Like Imagine if bears were the first threat and all this "Maybe A Bear?!" talk could've made sense, then all of a sudden it's bears and WWs.
    Basically, I think The Quarry is its own game and can't be compared to Until Dawn. However, both endings I dislike a little of lol. Until Dawn had their interviews but I don't think it was enough for me. However, the team cast did great to show how traumatic the experience was. The Quarry's podcast.... yeah I skipped all of them in each playthrough I watched. Also The Quarry's end could've been better and what would've fit this would be an end cutscene of the last surviving (or not) people. Wouldn't like a interview ending for The Quarry because I don't think that fits since you'd need all of the evidence for the kids to not be put in jail (also wouldn't fit the aesthetic of the game).

Now seasons like Double Feature have essentially railroaded whatever Lorre there might have been. though i personally liked both games, i can't say i liked The quarry better then Until dawn. My main issue with the Quarry was that after less then 30 minutes of gameplay, i already guessed about everything that was going to happen. Which was something i didn't have with Until dawn. In Until dawn's case, it took me about the half time point to figure out that Josh was still very much alive, and that he prolly wasn't the murderer, and it took me all the way to the end to be surprised by Hanna being a Windigo. Practically the only thing in the Quarry which i hadn't guess by the end of chapter 1 was Silas being the first werewolf, and killing him would end the curse. that being said, i did realise fairly early on that they probably had to kill the "main cause" to stop the turning, i just hadn't realised it was Silas. The very end with the podcast was also something i didn't like, i would have prefered an ending shot like Until dawn, where all the characters get interviewed on their experience. Or at least have one of the characters (or the two guys who run the podcast) be visible at the moment that thing is going on. There just wasn't really any visual backup which made the podcast drag on for too long. Another thing i noticed was that you weren't really able to influence relationships as much as in Until dawn (which didn't really have that much freedom in that aspecxt either), which is a shame bc one of the marketing campains promissed you would have nearly full control of the relationships going on. On top of that, i found the qte's in Until dawn way harder, there were barely any moments to really screw up in The quarry when it came to qte's and the "don't move" moments. Like The quarry sometimes felt like it expected the player to be a child, i swear those qte's were just stupidly easy to get right. Lastly, i personally prefer Windigo's over werewolves in general, so i might be slightly bias on that aspect.

    Idk if it exists but they should remaster until dawn for ps5, they also should create an ending for the quarry where u can see all the characters u saved. There's no reason to just add it in an update. They can leave the podcast but make it skippable

    For me the professor lupin werewolf model is the perfect werewolf model because it wasn’t overkill super crazy kill you looks but the quarry models were nice as well. My only few complaints were the lack of wolflike features in the wereWOLF. To me they were slightly different wendigos because they lacked fur and and real snout.

    A game like this with either Bigfoot, Mothman, Jersey Devil, or Aliens would be kind of cool.

  • @simplyshelbs16
    @simplyshelbs16 Před rokem

    I love both, but Until Dawn will always have a special place in my heart 💜 Vampires or Bigfoot was exactly what I was thinking lol but I think it would be cool to do a Lovecraftian one! I know there's a lot of Lovecraftian games, but there isn't one with a cast of characters you can make decisions for.
    Also, I almost spit out my drink at the London Tipton thing 🤣🤣

    Personally I like how Until Dawn misdirected you. At first you think some slasher is after you but that's just Josh playing an elaborate prank and the real threat is the wendigos. I figured out it was werewolves with The Quarry pretty early.

  • @sylvioros

    No way The Quarry is better. While the story is as good as UD, everything else are worse or the same level as UD. The crucial difference between them is the Supermassive's strategy of making games more accessible thus making its games less "gaming". I got a bit shocked with the amount of Playing vs. Watching ratio. In The Quarry you barely play! It's more like a FMV game than a game per se. That could be enough IF the QTEs and choices really matter, but in reality just a few them really change anything.
    I love story-driven games. Until Dawn and Detroit Become Human are one of few games I got all trophies, because I really dug into them. But The Quarry is harder because ir more tedious.

    God this is a hard one, a very very hard one to put down. Both Games had their unique fillers to them, both Games had their cast do a bang up amazing job. My favorite creature goes to until dawn because I’ve always loved the Wendigo. Their design and just the sheer body horror that one of those things brings out is more than enough to scare the living hell out of anyone.
    That being said as far as The Quarry, The setting was a lot more at home to me because I used to work as a camp counselor and there were times where I was scared to death about what was in the woods… I have a fear of the dark and even in my 30s there are still times where I’m out in the dark and I’m terrified. Another point to the newer game has to be the characters.
    Until Dawn had a rather good cast but I really couldn’t get on board with any of them, outside of three, furthermore since that game is missing a chapter unless you pre-ordered it you missed a good chunk of the story that probably would’ve fleshed out another one of the characters. However when it came to other characters I was having a hard time deciding if I even wanted to save them… Or if I just wanted to take them out immediately. Case in point putting a bullet in the head of that one character because she might be infected… If memory serves everyone I talk to who played the game did so even though they knew she wasn’t
    In the quarry all the characters had some thing going for them, all of them seemed a little more human, Kaitlyn was the one who surprised me because when she started out I was worried we were going to have a repeat of Until Dawn’s worst character. That being said near the end of the game she was one of my favorites.
    The company who is developing these games is going above and beyond, furthermore if you haven’t tried any of the dark pictures I will say that they’ve been getting better, they all have their positives in their negatives and it’s just an upward spiral

      Even though Emily is personally my favourite character from until dawn this was a very well written and thought out comment, and yes the dark pictures games have gotten progressively better with (in my opinion) house of ashes being *by far* the best of the three, so with the release of two pretty damn good games in a row I'm pretty excited for the devil in me.

    I feel like a connection through the games could have been done through the monsters rather then the characters like Travis could mention learning about tales of other beasts like the Wendigo from a police report or something. It could have also been a nice way to foreshadow the next games monsters. That way no one’s emersion is broken by referencing numbers or anything.
